Blue Crush (2002)
Lighten up, this film rocks
For all you wanna-be critics out there trying to be negative about the directing and cinematography, lighten up! This film is excellent in the fact that it does not try to be more than it is... a surf flick. Its obviously not trying to win an Oscar or a bafta. cant any of you simply enjoy a feel good movie? the filming of the waves and the surfing was top class and even though the acting was not Oscar worthy in any way shape or form i think it was impressive that they embraced the surfing culture and used local people in this film.
For all of you out there who like to just enjoy a films and don't feel that you need to be completely baffled, shocked or made to think you will enjoy this. Yes it is predictable but who cares its just a bit of fun.
For all of you who hated this film just because the plot was predictable and the acting was substandard i draw your attention to a gentleman named Sigmund Frued; "Some times a cigar is just a cigar"
You Got Served (2004)
Thank God its on DVD
The reason i say this is because, in my opinion, on video you can fast forward fast enough and trust me it is needed in this film. Just watch the dancing a boy you will be impressed it is bad ass! A friend of mine got it on DVD because, as a dancer, he wanted to see what it was made of. He is the most critical person of films and as you could expect he ripped the acting and directing to shreds (too right!) but the dancing, ah, his jaw was dropped! I totally agree with him. I now turn to my vote. Imagine, if you will, that the film is split like so; 1)acting, directing, editing and lighting (5) 2)Dancing and soundtrack (5) There we are half marks (for the dancing in case you weren't sure). Frankly id much prefer to think that the voting was all for the dancing and forget that anything else even figured then it would get a 9. If you are a fan of hip hop and break dancing, body popping, krumping etc then you will love the dancing. If only they had cut out all the other stuff it would be great. Thank God its on DVD cause now i can skip to the good scenes and not want to hide my self with shame wasting time watching what can only be described as a less than immature production. Next time just go to LA and film real crews on the streets (the acting will probably be better).
From Hell (2001)
A hellishly good film
I decided the other day that i wanted to see a film so, i ambled into my local Blockies and browsed for something i hadn't seen. My basic guideline, however, was it needed to have Johnny Depp in it. I adore him! He is a fantastic actor and i knew any film that i chose that had him in it would be worth while. Boy was I right. there it was sitting on the bottom shelf tucked behind classics like the Abyss and Lock Stock but i thought, Meh, what the hell I'll give it a try, i didn't even know what it was about.
Now normally i hate horror movies but this was so good. The story line though loosely based on the history involving Jack the Rippper was very engaging and had twists and turns in it that i had not expected, the only way i figured out who the killer was was the fact that the actor has a very distinct voice, apart from that i was guessing until the end. Sometimes acting left a lot to be desired, it was quite like a school play in some parts where the actors were just hanging around to say their lines there was no real feeling in it and i feel that Heather Graham could have been put to better use. Even though she is good actress i didn't feel that she worked in this film. However the pairing of Robby Coltrane and JD was inspired they worked very well off of each other and made the film that much more worth while. JD seems to be a chameleon when it comes to parts, he just becomes that person and his Cockney was spot on. Johnny Depp will forever be my favorite. To end, I recommend this to anyone who likes movies that are unpredictable.
Love from Hell
Troy (2004)
A visual Spectacular - Thats all I wanted
I loved this movie so much! because all i wanted was action-packed visual spectacle not because I wanted and intelligent plot or thought provoking dialogue, Hell no!. I went to see my favorite actors all in one place, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean all together, fighting each other, Great! and Eric Bana is fast becoming a fav of mine, very good looking and his acting really stood out and made the film a little more 'real' for me. I wasn't interested in getting a history lesson either, i gave that up after GCSE because i didn't enjoy it, who wants to learn when Brad Pitt is right there in front of you 12ft high?! And butt naked I might add. :P
I go to the movies to be entertained and Troy certainly did that. The fighting scenes were amazing especially the one-on-one between Achillies and Hector (I was routing for both unfortunately, so there were tears welling in my eyes) The costumes were beautiful and so were the actors involved (mostly).
After leaving the cinema, my brother, who is a classics student told me the whole story (as written by Homer) from beginning to end and yes there were differences, major differences but i still did learn a little something about classics that i had never known before. If you want to get the untouched version of the Illiad READ it don't go to the cinema expecting to get the visual version what you make up in your head is far more vivid anyway. I think that teenagers my age will leave this film and want to read the actual thing afterwards, i know i do and GOOD it gave them a kick up the butt to get a little culture.
People going to see Troy for a intellectual experience will be very disappointed but if you love Brad Pitt and want to see him running around in a skirt this is for you!
Love Actually (2003)
Crap Actually
Sorry to use the word 'actually' in the summary. Its is a bit of a cliche just like the film! This film was so soulless and orchestrated its not true. There is nothing that even resembles genuine emotion anywhere. The script was however, decent and the actors were top class but their talents were completely wasted. There were a few times where i laughed out loud but one-liners do not make a film.
I managed to stick with it until the end but i was very close to turning off right at the beginning when Hugh Grant did a more that sappy voice over about 9/11. If that isn't the biggest manipulation of the publics' feeling I dont know what is. Maybe some Propaganda posters should be put round the cinemas now? There needs to be a place in this world where there is no politics involved. People go to the cinema to be entertained and when they need an escape not to be bombarded with political troubles, they may as well watch the news at home.
All in all i think you can tell that i was not too impressed by Love Actually. I normaly like romantic comedies but as far as i can see there was no real romance just comic book stuff. This film truly fell on its face.
