Tenet (2020)
Underrated Gem
This is personally my favorite Nolan movie along with Interstellar. If anyone is deterred to view it due to the relatively low ratings, I urge you to give it a shot, especially if you are a sci-fi fan and/or a Nolan enthusiast.
Where else can you see a "temporal pincer movement" unfolding? Combat between recto and verso temporal characters, these all blew my mind, in a good way.
Trust me, it is complicated but go with the feel. You don't have to understand every detail. There's sure to be scientific plot holes if you hunt for them (like Interstellar). Yet the film has the right vibes to make you understand the flow and be entertained. The complicated structure and plot device increases the rewatchability. I was convinced in my second viewing that this is a masterpiece in the sci-fi action genre.
The characters are pretty rich and heroic with wonderful actors/actresses. The three leads are all captivating and likeable: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki.
I actually skipped viewing it in the cinemas due to the lower reviews and only gave it a shot when it came out on streaming. I've seen all of the Nolan films and gone to see most at the cinemas since Dark Night, so it was rare for me to skip it.
And now I regret that decision. After watching Tenet twice on a small screen, I would love to see it on the big screen. I've recently watched Oppenheimer on 70mm film IMAX. It was ok but nothing special for a Nolan film. Too much closeups of faces to my liking. Tenet would have been a perfect experience to view on a proper IMAX presentation.
Zwei Leben (2012)
Plot holes
All in all a pretty watchable spy thriller. Yet some major plot holes downgrade the film.
(1) Why would the Stasi plant an imposter in place of a person that is still alive and actively seeking out her mother in the West. She even created a video calling out to her mother. If she hadn't traveled to Norway and/or the Norwegian mother had realized her real daughter was alive and well, the whole operation would have collapsed. The proper method would probably be to plant an agent in place of a person they know to be definitely dead and records erased.
(2) Why would the Stasi burn the girl's body in the woods not far from the residential area of the town. It would attract attention and leave bone remains. Far safer to bury the body.
(3) The assassination method to cut the breaks of the victim's car is comically unpractical. What if the driver uses the breaks while slowly moving out of the yard or if the victim simply survives? So many things could go wrong.
If these were authentic Stasi methods, no wonder they went out of business.
