The Expanse (2015)
Intricately directed a well thought over SciFi plot
From the days of H.G. Wells, we have always been fascinated by the "expanse" of the universe around us. The interest gets further established by classics such as Star Trek and Star Wars. We have been introduced the worlds such as Marvel and DC. Yet, in such a world we have some SciFi that literally present everything as close to science as possible. Take Isaac Asimov's books or Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Its definitely a fun journey.
The Expanse is one such SciFi that has been intricately directed keeping it as close to scientific reality as possible with a added unknown variable that makes this the next SciFi to watch out for. Given that there are very few well known actors in the series, it is easy to miss this one out. Furthermore, the Expanse tends to build the context over the seasons and not just have a circular repeat of plots across seasons. Imagine it to be a 5-course meal laid out with each course taking your senses to the next level. A definitely must watch.
The reason why I rated it 7 is because of the relative creativity around some of the direction fundamentals that are not new but follows the originals of Star Trek or Star Wars.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)
Good sequel but the first is still the best
I guess the first of any series is always the best. I think the stunts were awesome. The best part of the movie is the mountain duel between Snake Eyes along with Jinx and the red ninjas. Simply awesome. The next best part of the movie is probably the gadgets, typical G.I Joe style. One would (and probably should) expect more out of the movie. Hence it is a disappointment. Another disappointment was the killing of the characters esp Duke. Final disappointment, I miss Scarlet from the 1st part. Of course, missed just a little not much thanks to Lady Jaye's wowww dressing sense ;-). All said and done, I would like the old characters and some new ones.
Taken 2 (2012)
Nice trip around Istanbul and lovely drive across Albania...apart from that a one time watch movie..
A lovely view of the Albanian mountains and a lovely excursion across Istanbul. I would consider it as a one time watch. The first part was way above this one. The best part of the movie was the small mobile phone Liam Nesson was carrying. The next best part was crashing into US embassy and walking unhurt. Well that is something :-). In the end, it would have been nice to have concluded the movie in Albania instead of Istanbul. Imagine the chase ending in Albania. It would really have been nice. Probably that the story writer kept it for part 3 with the "sons" of the bad guy coming back. Well we just have to wait and watch. Oh almost missed this, Liam Nesson can really make you feel how unfit you are ;-). At this age he is still running fit and scaring the tough guys. One more open string was "what happened to Liam's French friend? Did he make it?". Well that goes bad on the direction, I would say.
100% Love (2011)
"Love"ly movie...Made me nostalgic about my school days :-)
A well knit movie. The director did a wonderful job. It literally made be feel nostalgic by reminding me of my "study" memories. I am sure this was someone's true story. The whole concept of having that competitive spirit and falling for adolescence charms has caught my interest. And how could I forget, the lovely Tamanna did draw my attention. Wish I were Naga Chaitanya in the movie. All said and done. It is one of the best stress-reliever movies especially for folks from the South India. A definite "must watch" category movie. A humble request to the Bollywood community to not to remake this movie in Hindi and make it a flop (Please donot be another Gautam Menon). The point is some stories are meant for South Indians only. The North Indians will not be able to relate to it because of the various cultural differences and vice versa. Cultural Difference: The one and only uniqueness of India that ensures the unique personality of us Indians. Interestingly if you ever see it from my perspective, it is this that ensures that our country is not taken over by anyone and thus ensuring a kind of ironical unity within us without realizing it :-). Anyways will stop the philosophy here and keep it for some other occasion :-).
Nippu (2012)
Shockingly disappointing
I would have given it probably 3, but gave it 4 only because of Ravi Teja. The film storyline can be categorised as a very common story with a rating of probably 4. The problem was with the direction. Ravi Teja and his movies need to be directed in a different style. One cannot direct it in similar lines to that of other heroes. The fight scenes did not suit Ravi Teja (whereas his other movies it did. Check "Bhadra" for e.g.). The story was not unfolded well. It was similar to one of his earlier movies (Bhadra). Compare it to that and one realises the gaps. Would recommend it only to the die-hard fans of Ravi Teja. For the rest, don't bother. All said and done a total disappointment.
