Xing fu shi guang (2000)
"Happy Times" does not have a happy ending
We watch two lonely people meet and struggle and in the end, the worst possible events occur and I felt like I watched what felt like 3 hours for naught.
Two sad, lonely people meet by chance, try to make each other happy but do the wrong things for all of the right reasons. In the end, they part out of misunderstanding and the audience is left at a cliffhanger not knowing what will happen next.
Now I feel depressed.
I don't know about you, but if I watch 3 hours of people struggling and then have it all end with a simple misunderstanding, it makes me angry and I feel as thought I wasted my time. Don't watch if you like happy endings! This is not a "happy" movie at all!
May (2002)
Too Slow, Not Enough "Good" Stuf
This movie took off like an elderly resident in a nursing home. It dragged on and on...I wouldn't say it was amusing enough not to have 1.5 fast forward on it. Most of the movie was spent watching May look at people and dolls through the hair in her face. This movie should have been only half as long.
I took quite a while a while to get to the "good" stuff, I'd say the last 30 minutes. It is a shame that there wasn't more "good" stuff, it could have been a decent movie if they just cut half of the first hour and half and enlarged the conclusion.
I also think the ending was supposed to be more shocking too...but...oh well.
Just press fast forward or better yet, just skip until the last 30 minutes.
Chaos (2005)
To Quote two famous critics: "This is S__t"
This is a remake of Last House on The Left, except it extends into Crap Land. It takes away hope and leaves you with despair. Not even fun despair, this movie is S__t.
Last House on The left was bad enough, there is no point to this film, a remake of crap is crap times 10.
This movie isn't even on rottentomatoes.com. Surprised it is even here. Film critics agree, this movie is the biggest waste of time imaginable. I think this movie has had it.
Even enjoying gore and blood and violence, I'd still say save your money and ignore this pathetic waste of film and time.
Meet the Fockers (2004)
I've been 'Fockerized'
Okay, I was *extremely* prepared for this to flop, but surprisingly, like a few others on IMDb, I enjoyed this more than the first! I heard so many bad reviews, but I think that people were so hyped up about the sequel, it was unfairly viewed.
Barbra Streisand and Hoffman were brilliant! I was both surprised and pleased at their performance! ^_^ They brought a lot to this movie.
I also hear there is going to be yet another sequel, "Meet the Little Focker" well, we'll see how that one goes! I don't know how much millage you can get out of the 'focker' joke, but it is still working!
Good movie, good sequel, rent and laugh!
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
OK, but definitely a rental
OK, I love the BBC version but I was willing to broaden my horizons by watching this version. I tried to watch openly, knowing full well that this was a different interpretation, but it left me wanting.
The colors were vibrant and the visuals were great, but the songs' lyrics were so hokey it left a bad taste in my mouth. I am a big fan of musicals, but it felt like there was only one okay song in there. The English lyrics sounded like badly translated songs done by high schoolers. There were times I cringed. I wanted to like it so bad, but the songs were so bad that I could not enjoy but one of them.
I enjoyed the acting and the leads were great. It was a good opportunity to see another adaptation of my favorite book, but I wouldn't feel like it would have been worth it to see it in theatres. Just rent it. ^_^
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Wonderful movie but end ruins it all
Mysterious, intriguing..until the end, when it seems the last five minutes of the screenplay blew away and a 12 year old brat took over and replaced the missing pages with CRAP! What happened? It was so good! Then, like A.I. (who's screenplay writer died before finishing the end and Spielberg added some hockey alien ending in the last 3 minutes of the film) it ends like..HUH??!! WTF just happened? This is probably the worst non-ending ever! Would really like to know if they just ran out of ideas on how to end it or suddenly became addicted to hallucinogens that ate half their brain and lead to this concoction of an ending? I will not spoil this CRAP of an ending(?) but warn you if you hate lame endings as much as I.
Suffice to say, if you want to watch it, just stop five minutes before the film's end and CREATE your own.
Dark Water (2005)
Magnificent mother/daughter story
Wonderful film, if you don't confuse this genre with something it isn't. Don't let the trailer fool you, this is a psychological mystery about a mother's love for her child. It is not a horror film nor is there blood and guts.
Don't necessarily expect the happiest ending in the world and enjoy the brilliant acting of Jennifer Connelly and direction of Walter Salle. As long as you enter the theatre expecting to see a drama mystery, you should be happy.
*A little side note to those who criticize any American remakes of Asian films and will never be satisfied: 1) Remember that the American remake is more true to the original Japanese film than the Japanese film was to the original Japanese novel! 2) At least the Asian film makers are making a profit from selling the rights (unlike the countless Asian remakes of American films without buying the rights) 3) Any remake made is a nod back to the original film and is introducing new fans to Asian cinema who otherwise wouldn't even know of its existence 4) And if you STILL hate Americans, remember: no one FORCED the Japanese film makers to sell the rights and make a S**T load off the American remake by sitting on their butts. If anything, hate them! They "sold themselves out" to the "horrible Americans!"
