Music and Lyrics (2007)
Quirky...funny... all around enjoyable
I actually first saw this movie in theaters with my girlfriend... there wasn't anything else really good out and we had no idea what it was about so we took a chance... and truth be told I wasn't all that impressed.... I thought it was alright but the only thing that made the movie somewhat memorable and worthy of consideration for a second viewing was the pop! music video at the start...
However, I watched it again the other day with a friend of mine and I was pleasantly surprised... I found Drew Barrymore's quirky, off beat and spontaneous character adorable and Hugh Grant was great as Alex. The characters were both lovable, the humor (especially Alex's quick wit and one liners) were clever and funny and in the end the movie was a slightly different but none the less enjoyable love story. This movie was really underrated in the box office and continued on that track unfortunately. So never mind renting... go do yourself a favor and pick this movie up at your local video store.. chances are, like Alex's solo album in the movie, you'll be able to find this hidden gem on sale for $9.99 somewhere...
Argo (2004)
I loved this movie
well....what can i say....Argo is an interesting movie. I am Hungarian so i had a chance to watch it in its original format and i was pretty pleased. It took some getting used to and the "action scenes" were pretty cheesy, but i think some people who bash it kind of miss the point. this isn't trying to be a James bond action movie. it's a comedy. There are a good few things that you wont get or laugh at unless you are Hungarian, so that may take down the value of the movie for some, but than again, this movie wasn't really intended for the US audience. While a good number of jokes are verbal, the sheer stupidity of some of the characters is mind blowing. From some aspects this movie reminds me of some Jancso films...................I thought it was a good movie, the humor was great, action was bleh, while it may look like the producer is trying to copy his US colleagues, to me, these references came off more in the tone of satire than anything.
Initial D: Third Stage (2001)
Fun, appealing and a must watch movie for initial d fans
I just watched it today and I have to say I really liked it. As said before, it focuses more on the emotional side of things a bit, but there is a healthy does of racing. A must see for initial d fans. Takumi fallows in his dads footsteps and beats the son of his dads old rival. (only by the skin of his teeth though) and goes for a rematch with the Emperor team. Plus he completely owns one of Mogi's ex-"friends".......racing in the snow......things also get slowly started with the next part of the story as "Project D" starts to shape up..... the story is given a temporary kind of ending since takumi graduates and goes onto being a racer on a new team. Although the story is continued in the 4th stage......i give it a 9/10
Ong-Bak (2003)
Where it lacks in story it makes up for in action.
Lot of people have been complaining about the fact that the story is crap. As others have stated though, I think they are missing the point. This isn't Rainman or Forest Gump. Do not come here looking for a deep and rich story line. While the story isn't the greatest, it's not as bad as some make it out to be. It's like almost any other martial arts movie. The story is basically just there so you can catch your breath between the fights. That said, on with the rest of the review.
This was recommended to me by my martial arts instructor so i got my hands on a copy shortly after. I already had high expectations for the movie which were not only well met but even surpassed by a good bit. The action is great and the fight scenes look and "feel" real. You wont see any wires or CG in this movie, which make it all the more enjoyable imo. The movies is pretty fast paced all through out and other than one or 2 parts, you are either watching a chase or a very well choreographed fight.
In short, if you want a very good action movie with a new and refreshing twist from all the Hollywood cheese, kung fu or karate movies. Check this out. Since it's a Muay Thai film you won't see any shaolin Temples or Karate Dojos here. The movie is about the Thai people and their (beautiful and highly effective) martial art .
I give this movie a 10/10
