Final Approach (1991)
An underrated gem
What began as a technology test with a story attached turned into a rare and hidden gem of a film about life, memory and consciousness. Yes, there is a lot of footage used from the USAF which does look stunning but we see perhaps a little too much of. But the core of the film is a one-room conversation between two men that for much of the time keeps you guessing as to just what is going on - is it psychiatry, some kind of interrogation or is there a much bigger, broader conversation going on. Those that dismiss it as "all a dream" either didn't watch or understand what was happening. It is not a dream! Approach it with an open mind and don't expect to have information spoon-fed to you and you'll enjoy this. It's pretty funny too :)
Nowhere Man (1995)
Truly Remarkable
This show manages to pull off a truly amazing trick. It begins with a premise that seems silly and far-fetched but is none-the-less interesting and hopefully you stick with it out of that interest.
I hope you do because as you get towards the final episodes it becomes apparent that the there is a truly remarkable and brilliant explanation (take note Chris Carter!) and once it's revealed (or you guess it) the silly and far-fetched idea is not only perfectly plausible, it is a subtle and cunning plot that rocks your view of the entire series.
The themes of social control and manipulation are built up in layers of seemingly episodic importance but only in the closing stages does it become apparent that there is a grand plan and that it not only makes sense, but is chillingly resonant.
One of the few, truly under-rated shows or our time. Watch it!
Six Feet Under (2001)
Simply Perfect
Possibly the greatest series TV ever. Fully drawn three dimensional characters, a brilliant ensemble cast, pitch-perfect writing, a dark witty sense of humour and a canvas that allowed them to tackle the most important questions and thoughts about life, love, existence, family, tolerance and forgiveness.
Not to mention the most powerful and moving finale in history. Most shows just get cancelled, some get to finish, Six Feet Under ended on a sequence of such emotional power and pathos, I defy you not to be in tears but it's end.
This should be required watching - nothing will teach you more about the human condition than Six Feet Under. My life is richer for having watched it.
