Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Murmuring (2022)
Babadook Lite
Explores similar themes of working through personal demons. The dialogue was tedious and at times like pulling teeth. I get it: scientists are human, too, and capable of making terrible leaps of logic due to personal feelings or bias. But it would have been more interesting if both characters tried to reason through the phenomena, established some connection to the murmurations and reached a resolution. Instead, Ms. Davis dials up another "head case" character, who ultimately confronts her inner pain. Some interesting ideas and great actors but ultimately the payoff didn't work for me. I was hoping for more (poor me).
Renaissance (2006)
Meh
This would've been better served as a fully animated feature. Think Tron In black and white, with very thin plot and dialogue. While the medium has its merits (beautiful at times), I think it hurts the film overall. I never fully felt like I was "experiencing" the action and suspense or absorbed into the world-- it just felt flat and dull. With so much negative space in certain scenes, you end up spending too much effort trying to figure out what shapes are are being formed. I wanted to love this film but watching it for the 3rd time (this time with the English voice-over, which, even with Daniel Craig, is not as good as in French with subtitles), I can't really say that I enjoyed the film as a whole.
Riddle (2013)
Yikes
I desperately wanted to like this movie only because I'm a Kilmer fan, and appreciate the efforts of veteran actors like William Sadler, but even they couldn't save this poorly written piece from rental oblivion. If this were a student film piece, this movie would certainly showcase the promise and potential of everyone involved. Even though this was made on a low budget, it's a flat-footed attempt at a thriller. This is one of Kilmer's "paycheck player" roles, and is not worth viewing if you're a fan. The younger actors are not terrible, but they don't bring much to the table, either. Use your Redbox free rental promo code for something else.
