Stonewall (2015)
Profoundly Offensive
While I embrace diversity in my own community, I do not appreciate nor condone the limited portrayal of gender roles in this film. Not enough women were featured and nearly every single gay man in this film is portrayed as a lisping, limp wristed queer who is over earnest in every line delivery he gives. The characters become annoying beyond belief. I was half expecting a musical number to break out. Roland Emmerich should be deeply ashamed of himself for offering such a trite insult to his own LGBT community. Worst film of the year, and certainly the most offensive. This is not at all helpful to the LGBT, especially the younger members who have no sense of history about their own community - this only informs that history with the same stereotypes that these heros were fighting in real life.
Me at the Zoo (2012)
Tarnation Rip Off
This is film is a bad rip off of the iconic masterpiece of personal media assemblage "Tarnation" by Texas Queer filmmaker Jonathan Caouette.
Caouette's assembly of voice recordings, home films and art pieces are obviously what inspired Chris Crocker's lame video piece and is the very stolen essence of this far inferior film that HBO should be ashamed of leveraging. It is unoriginal, hollow and forced.
If you want to see a truly gut wrenching tale of growing up queer in the deep south, see Tarnation. A moving deeply personal portrait that won the longest standing ovation in the history of documentary at Cannes.
Clean (2004)
Ugh
A friend of mine lent me a screener of this film. I was told at the particular screening my friend went to there, was more laughter and walk outs than any other film. With good reason.
This is ultra bad film school writing, directing, acting, shooting and editing at it's most insipidly hispterish worst complete with coke sniffing off body scars (sorry kids, you are not cronenberg), badly acted sex (I feel sorry for everyone involved), and crappy cinematography. Editing makes no sense, ackward cuts and matchs, not in a good way. No sense of flow even within scenes. Acting is hollow al la 'cool' indie crap. The dialogue and writing is perhaps some of the most illogically stupid and amateurish drivel any bad actor has been tasked with. not even pacino could work this garbage. wow. just, wow.
Paul Morrissey minus the talent.
Dreamgirls (2006)
a big mess of a film
As far as i am concerned, the only reason to view this mess of a film is Jennifer Hudson. Her musical performances are bewilderingly good. In the now famous "I ain't going'" number, her passion and emotion swell to a near unsettling fervor. I have never seen audience members give a standing ovation to a movie screen. While not quite as moved to do the same, I can easily understand. She entrances the audience with an unbridled vocal power and proves a musical force to be reckoned with, far out performing Beyonce, who while competent in this film comes across as a cardboard cut out in comparison.
The film speeds through decades, tracing only quickly carved character arcs that are prevented meaningful insights due to the amount of time that must be covered.
musical numbers are initiated at rapid fire speed, lest the audience forget the film is a musical, and delivery of these too numerous interludes is highly inconsistent. It lacks a cohesive style that would otherwise tighten the films's structure and allow it to flow naturally. the result is a feeling of force.
Eddie Murphy's character falls victim to this trap, as he develops a nasty heroin addiction and the root of the pain is rarely revealed, being quite trite in the few moments time is alloted to address it. I was quite disappointed by his performance having heard so many grandiose Oscar predictions, which perhaps stem from a non comedic performance, not his normal perception as a popular performer. The accolades I feel are nothing more than that very reaction.
all in all a very disappointing let down considering the massive hype encircling it.
The Wicker Man (2006)
what the????
This could very possibly be one of the worst films made in the history of mankind. A clear paycheck ride for nicholas cage, whose career could have been killed off by this film had he not captured the hearts of America's lowest common denominator with other cardboard performances years past. Look for this one to storm the razzies, with particular note to Ms. Beahan, whose "bee stung" lips detract attention from her over earnest eyes, and hollow poses of her underfed frame, one half expects her to sit at a piano and rip out a Fiona apple cover...again, apple, bees. so many bees. why not bea arthur? Neil LaBute should be spanked vigorously for this insulting debacle that cost an astounding $40,000,000 to make. That figure is worth seeing it alone. I sure hope they had great catering on set, because the money is no where to seen on screen.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
well done
I approached this remake with a great deal of skepticism, and quite frankly would never have bothered to watch it had it not been for the casting of the always impeccable sarah Polly. Her performance in this film sums up the great intelligence with which the entire film was constructed. At risk of sounding corny, it is a mass friendly contemplation on morality, consumerism and the value of human life, and it actually scares the pants off of you. The film takes it's time developing the characters beyond one dimensional zombie fighters and leads the viewer to invest themselves emotionally in the outcome of the players, which makes the horror all the more frightening. The film accomplishes this without alienating the audience and keeps fans of Zombie flicks highly satisified. Even if this is not your genre, it is well worth a viewing, in a very dark room!
