One of Miike's best.
13 February 2005
I am not to sure why this movie isn't looked at more positively. I think it is one of Miike's best. Miike is good at making a movie that is serious but also looks like a manga (characters getting their faces bloodied up only to cover their wounds with band-aids).

The movie revolves around Koji Chihara's (1-ichi, 9 Souls) character who becomes the towns enforcer right after highschool. Protecting small business's and helping people if they get screwed out of their money. Out of stupidity he cheats on his perfect girlfriend with a girl he knew from his childhood, which becomes a big mistake. The hardest part about his new girlfriend is she doesn't want him to fight, but that is how he makes his living. This allows the people that he beat up in the past to come and beat him up without him defending himself. After taking a bad beating he begins to realize how great his girlfriend was, who used to look up too him when he got into fights.

This movie shows the struggle he has wanting to return to his old girlfriend, and how he realizes the mistake he made. The movie shows pictures of their past to give you the nostalgic feeling that the characters wish to return to but can't. It becomes very emotional until the Koji Chihara and his two friends go on a road trip which seems similer to the road trips you see in Beat Takeshi movies.

The movie is a perfect mix of violence, drama and comedy, as Miike does best. With great music throughout the movie and in the credits. I personally like this one better than it's sequel, "Young Thugs: Nostalgia", which is not what the majority seems to think.

Blowback 2 (1991)

A cheesier "The Killer"
8 June 2004
First of all, Riki Takeuchi is a bad ass and I enjoy him in all of his movies. Blowback 2 (Blowback: Love or Death) was slightly hard to get a hold of but after seeing the cover, (Riki with a big chain gun) I really put in some effort to get a hold of this.

The action in this movie is really good. Blood really squirts from gun wounds as it would in a John Woo film. There is even some bloody head shots. There's tons of big explosions, giant guns, and a really really good showdown at the end (Reminding me a little of Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive: Hanzaisha). If you like lots of bloody gun fights and Riki Takeuchi, definitely check this out, but for something to be taken completely seriously, rent John Woo's The Killer.

Great serious Yakuza movie
8 May 2004
Most of Miike's yakuza movies include alot of humor and over the top gore, in which I love. I was sort of expecting that with this movie and had my hopes up high, but I was introduced to a new style of Yakuza movie.

Ishimatsu is a dishwasher at a resturaunt who saves the life of a Yakuza boss when a assassin was ordered to kill him at Ishimatsu's resturaunt. Ishimatsu is let into the family at a high rank and but he isn't what was expected. He starts p***ing people off in the family by starting a little gang-war, and after theres a settlment between the two gangs, they are all trying to get rid of Ishimatsu. He also gets pretty wound up with heroin.

Alot of character develoupment in this movie. The movie has a low tone but glossy color that sets and really good atmosphere with a slow jazz soundtrack.

The blood in this movie isnt very abundent but the violence is strong a realistic. Not very many bloodsprays like in most of Miike's movies, but you dont really look for that because IMHO this movie is so stylish without the need of strong blood or gore.

It doesnt seem like to many people like this movie but when I got done watching this movie I felt really good like I have never felt after a movie.
