Aspirants (2021)
Realistic and hard hitting
Loved the series. Phenomenal work.
It seems I'm the only one who's more impressed with Abhilash's character than Sandeep bhaiya's character.
I understand Sandeep bhaiya has his fair share of struggle but look at Abhilash's journey,
He has lost a lot and he made some life altering decision at the right time to reach where he is (IAS officer)(I know, I know it's a character) and he understands and owns his decision. He said, It's not the right one but necessary one. So if someone is really inspiring
It has to be Abhilash for me.
Thank you TVF making a great series with phenomenal characters.
💛💛💛💛
P. S. - love Dhairya's character, how she understands what Abhilash needs and respected his decision
And love the way she explains her plan A and plan B (we don't need to an IAS officer to help people in need, anyone can do that if they have the will(her NGO dream)).
Great to see arc of Abhilash's character.
He redeemed himself 💛💛
1917 (2019)
A visual masterpiece with full of emotions.
1917 starts with a view of resting soldiers, Green trees and landscapes showing the quietness before the war. After this it directly puts you in the war zone through the eyes of two soldiers (Blake and Scofield).
The movie starts with the mission that depends on one brother to save another. But suddenly it becomes the responsibility of the fellow soldier to carry the honor and valor of his friend and fellow soldier. 1917 shows that the bond of friendship is stronger than the horror of War.
1917 never tries to make you choose sides, right or wrong in the war. It depicts how a small yet significant information or effort can save life of 1600 men.
In 1917 Sam Mendes manages to create a compelling movie with the stories of his grandfather Alfred Mendes.
Sam Mendes never tries to make anyone hero during the war. He just presents you with the terror and horror faced by soldiers in WW 1.
1917 is technically brilliant specially the cinematography and background score.
At times Thomas newman's score feels like work of Hans Zimmer.
The single-take (long shot) camera technique of Roger Deakins makes 1917 a incredible watch as the drama unfolds infront of your eyes.
There are few scenes which are high on emotions yet they are so beautifully shot, it feels like the earth is shifting under your feet.
The trip wire scene and The Long shot of planes (Night scene) shooting on Scofield are magnificent example of technical brilliance.
Though 1917 is a technical masterpiece, it never runs out of emotions and keeps you engaged with the character's journey.
It shows how many lives are sacrificed during war yet new Life survives.
1917 is one of the best WW 1 movies I have scene in recent times. It achieves the technical standards set by Dunkirk but it has a lot more to offer on emotional front.
It's Dunkirk sequel with a lot of emotions. If you have a knack for war movies you won't be disappointed.
1917 leaves you spellbound with the sheer brilliance of it's camera work and craft.
Chhapaak (2020)
A subtle masterpiece.
No over the top dialogues, no unnecessary drama or melodrama. Chhapaak is brilliant on so many levels. Top notch acting by everyone especially Deepika and Vikrant. They are in best form of their career.
Direction is superb, it takes a great director to handle a sensitive subject like this and Meghna gulzar does justice to it. She never creates Chhapaak into a thriller or like a bollywood melodrama. The movie runs smoothly and shows all the struggle of Laxmi Agrawal in a proper way. It also includes several other incidents of acid attack.
The background score and music is perfect. It's haunting and gut wrenching. Especially the lyrics of title song make you feel the pain of the victim of heinous crime.
Sab Jhulas gaya ( everything is burned )
Chhapaak se pehchan le gaya ( With a splash, it destroys the identify)
Perfect song for the movie.
The romance between the lead is strategically placed and does not feel like a hindrance to the main story line, it blends perfectly with the storyline.
You'll be shocked at the last shot of the movie. It's so haunting that you'll force to think how a person can do this to other. Last shot stayed with me till now. It's sad yet exactly what a movie like this need to make people think about the consequences of this heinous crime.
Chhapaak is a movie which everyone one should watch even children (under adult supervision) to understand how cruel society can be.
In the end, Chhapaak establishes Meghna n Deepika as the new force of bollywood.
Gully Boy (2019)
Alia shocks and rocks
Zoya Akhtar is gem to Bollywood. Another hit from her. In her latest outing, she almost matches her best work till date. Luck by chance.
Gully boy is a good, enjoyable film with great music.
Performances are great ( Ranvir almost killed it but sometimes Ranvir feels like Ranvir. Not the character itself but great effort). Alia was amazing and refreshingly Jealous/Sanki (short tempered), phenomenal acting. Siddhant Chaturvedi was great in his debut, never missed a beat, felt like a seasoned artist.
Loved the family side story. Poetry used in movie is great. A poem (Doori) will bring tears to your eyes.
but very slow paced and the Kalki Koechlin plot seems irrelevant, could have explored Mc Sher's character more.
Overall a good movie.
Definitely a must watch.
Music is worth listening on repeat.
Dunkirk (2017)
A technical masterpiece, Empty at emotional core
Dunkirk and Saving private Ryan both movies are based in WWll but there is a huge difference. On one hand Saving private Ryan relies on human emotions and depth, Dunkirk relies on visuals and effects. Which is definitely a bad thing for a war drama where film lacks the emotional depth which should be generated after watching a war movie ( like in Schindler's list, SPR).
Dunkirk, almost as War for the Planet of the Apes, plays out without much dialogue, leaning on just the background score and effects in most scenes. It almost goes without saying that Hans Zimmer delivers with another incredible score. The sound design is also extremely well crafted. The sound of planes passing above, the gunfire, and the explosions all contribute to a compelling thriller like situation, almost similar to Saving Private Ryan.
The cinematography is great. The effects in this film are breathtaking. The casting, authenticity, WWII vehicles are on spot. The best part about movie was the minimal use of CGI, which are the dominating part of action in the movies these days.
While the characters in this film aren't that interesting, Harry Styles, is excellent at his debut. Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Fionn Whitehead also all give standout performances despite the limited screen time they are given. The only character in the movie which I cared for was Mark Rylance's.
The concept of three parts coming together, the beach, the sea, and the air is an interesting idea.
I should love this film. Historical drama? Compelling story? WWII setting? One of my favorite director ? Amazing cinematography? Mind blowing sound? Superb performances from an ensemble cast? All of these elements made me sure I would love this going in. But, Dunkirk's lack of emotional connection.
If I reviewed this based on technical achievement.. it's a 5 star rated movie. But it lacks the emotional depth and it had nothing extra ordinary to take home. I simply can not put this in the list with Saving private Ryan and Schindler's list.
At the risk of sounding like a person.. trying to take a different stand, I did not love this film. Do I love elements of this? Yes. Is this a 5-star movie? Definitely and Unfortunately, no.
Sully (2016)
Well crafted 5700 Seconds (from 208 sec)
Sully is best example of how a great director(Eastwood) can make a great movie (definitely not his best) with just one line or 208 sec story.
Sully is a movie which glorifies the real time effort of a real life hero who saved every one on the flight and still keeps his humanity intact.
The best part of the direction was that director teases you with the accident which could have happened without showing the real landing on Hudson river till last.(he shows 3 different scenario of landing through Sully's eyes.)
Tom hanks was perfect in every frame( After 15 year, Oscar nomination is on the way) and i couldn't have imagined anyone else for this role. he was pitch perfect and showed how confident captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger was, but at the same time uncertain of his own doing that if he was the real danger to life of people on the plane.
I was immensely impressed by the other hero of the movie, Editing and Cinematography. it was great to see how flashbacks and imagination was used to move story forward. The only disappointment of the movie was one dimensional role of a talented actress Laura Linney and how she was given only one object to show her emotions and how she was just reduced as a weeping wife.
Aaron Eckhart was good and provided some much needed comic relief.
On the whole it was a satisfying journey, journey which might be the most important journey of those 155 passengers and crew of their life. I recommend everyone at least give it a try.
Dhanak (2015)
siblings at their best
Form the director who has given us so many gems in the past, I was astonished how he can give something different yet beautiful every time he's behind the camera. Its a movie about a sister and her promise to her younger brother. The movie simply portrays the story of sister and brother who embarks on a journey in Rajasthan to meet superstar Sharukh khan. The relationship between the two leads is at best and it feels like they are not the actors playing their part but sister and brother. The dialogue are so real and hilarious that you feel connected to the character. The beauty of desert covered is breathtaking. I laughed through the whole movie and at the end you will feel so satisfied that you gave it a chance. Go give this a try. Its a story with simple premise which keeps you engage with well acted and crafted journey.
Akira (2016)
a disappointing affair...
Movie had nothing new to offer. The pacing was at its worst. Acting was good by Anurag kashyap and sonakshi. But other than this there is not much to appreciate. What's good.. 1. Acting - Anurag and sonakshi. 2. 1st half of the movie. 3. Dialogues - mainly Anurag kashyap's. 4. No extra song or romantic angle. 5. Konkarna sen 's cameo. What's bad. 1.Jumbled Second half. 2. One dimensional character. 3. Slow Pacing. 4.Preachy narration. I didn't expected this from A.r. murgadoss. But happy with performance of sonakshi. At one point in the movie you are shocked how family members of sonakshi send her to mental hospital without any reason. On the whole a disappointing meal.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Best romance of the decade!!
This movie, I got to say that is the one of the best romantic movies of the decade. SRK rocks. A masterpiece by king of romance(Yash Chopra). In JTHJ on one hand romance between SRK and Katrina is at extreme and on other side the,one sided love of Anushka is heart melting. SRK,s best after Swades & MNIK. Katrina looks fabulous and did justice with her character and Anushka shows the potential to play strong role of any type. Great direction, great plot and great performances by all. It is the best Diwali gift for a Bollywood movie lover. Dance sequence is great b/w SRK & Katrina. Music is quite good(one of the best from A.R.Rahmaan). It'll be remembered JAB TAK HAI JAAN. Go and watch a 1. matured(SRK),2. childish(Katrina)and 3. adult(Anushka)romance saga by Yash Chopra.....
