Yodha (2024)

Siddharth's High-octane actioner is let down by predictable plot , melodramatic climax and weak VFX
16 March 2024
"Siddharth Malhotra's 'Yodha' presents a blend of well-choreographed action sequences and skillful hand-to-hand combat, showcasing his prowess in physical performance. However, the VFX falls short, appearing choppy and lacking finesse. The film's 130-minute runtime maintains a decent pace, yet the screenplay stumbles towards the end, descending into familiar India-Pakistan tensions and melodrama. While the concept shows promise on paper, the execution falters with clichéd dialogues and an overly dramatic climax, reminiscent of various Hollywood action films. Raashi Khanna shines with her beauty, though Siddharth Malhotra's acting and Disha Patani's presence leave room for improvement. The film's early Buy1Get1 offer on its second day hints at a lukewarm reception. Despite its flaws, 'Yodha' offers moments of entertainment, especially for fans of action-packed cinema. For those interested, waiting for its release on Prime Video might be a more prudent choice to experience this blend of action and drama."

Maamla Legal Hai: A Breezy Legal Comedy Delight
3 March 2024
Maamla Legal Hai: A Breezy Legal Comedy Delight

Netflix injects some lightheartedness into its repertoire with "Maamla Legal Hai," a delightful deviation from the usual gritty crime dramas. Instead of delving into dark legal battles, the series offers a refreshing and slightly humorous portrayal of the inner workings of Indian Bar Associations.

Eschewing intricate legal details, "Maamla Legal Hai" prioritizes lighthearted entertainment. The witty writing duo, Saurabh Khanna and Kunal Aneja, mines humor from the court's eccentricities, ensuring the laughs remain fresh and organic throughout the eight-episode "Breezer" (referencing its short, light-hearted nature). While its primary focus is comedic entertainment, the series manages to deliver a heartwarming and satisfying climax, leaving viewers with a sense of fulfillment.

The cast shines throughout, with Ravi Kishan yet again delivering a captivating performance, building upon his success in "Laapata Ladies." Nidhi Bisht and Naila Grewal showcase their talents with contrasting characters, while Anant Joshi seamlessly blends in with an endearing performance. Anjum Batra and Vijay Rajoria anchor the supporting cast with solid portrayals.

While "Maamla Legal Hai" doesn't break new ground in terms of storytelling, it successfully fulfills its purpose - to provide a lighthearted and entertaining experience. This "harmless and effective" Netflix series offers the perfect escape for viewers seeking an enjoyable binge-watch filled with relatable humor and heartwarming moments.

Saltburnis is a Wild Rollercoaster with Unrestrained Brilliance in terms of storytelling but boils down to its unapologetically creepy and wierd character exploration.

As a standalone film, its just an extreme study of a character which transcends from simple to wild during its course. It's a rollercoaster from being a pleasant and lighthearted frndship to extremely creepy and disgusting dynamic of power play. The director doesn't give a dime before making those bizarre creative choices just to prove his point of demonstrating the nature of the lead. The outrageous screenplay is brilliantly executed and keeps you on toe about whats next. Exhilarating peeformances by Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Archie Madekwe and Sadie Soverall, especially Barry Keoghan with his wildest film yet. The lavish production, display of royalty well integrated . The filmaking may be fascinating in regions where engilish is a mother tongue of in the west, but it didn't appeal to me as much as I wanted it to. If Animal made you cringe and uncomfortable, then stay away from this Emerald Fennell film. He is just agressively unapologetic throughout.

BHAKSHAK on Netflix unfolds a gritty and honest narrative, exposing systemic flaws with unflinching realism.

"Bhashak," Netflix's latest offering, courageously exposes systemic flaws inspired by the Muzaffarpur shelter home case. Director Pulkit navigates the harrowing tale with restraint, shunning sensationalism for authenticity. The film delves into the challenges faced by small-town journalists reporting on powerful crimes. Bhumi Pednekar shines as Vaishali, embodying the film's editorial voice with sincerity. Sanjay Mishra adds seasoned humor, while Aditya Srivastava and Sai Tamhankar deliver excellent support. The film, backed by Shahrukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, deserves recognition for tackling crucial narratives. With a focus on realism over dramatic highs, "Bhashak" stands as a testament to the importance of telling impactful stories.

Badland Hunters: A Visually Striking Action Spectacle with Narrative Shortcomings"

"Badland Hunters: A Visually Striking Action Spectacle with Narrative Shortcomings"

In this post-apocalyptic action thriller, Badland Hunters, while suffering from a repetitive and clichéd plot and uninteresting characters, excels in stunning hand-to-hand choreography and scintillating action set pieces. The film benefits greatly from the expertise of its veteran stunt coordinator turned director, known for his work on Train to Busan. Commendable world-building, visionary concepts, and excellent VFX are hindered by conventional writing. The short, crisply edited runtime avoids unnecessary elements. Don Lee's exceptional portrayal of Nam-san, with exhilarating action sequences, overshadows the film's narrative weaknesses, making it a guiltily satisfying popcorn-worthy entertainer, particularly for adrenaline enthusiasts.

The Holdovers (2023)

The Holdovers is a thoughtful, sweet and pleasantly heartwarming film which feels like an old warm hug

My Score : 92/100

"The Holdovers" is a heartwarming tale of unlikely friendships. It's the kind of movie that lingers with you, gently nudging your conscience and leaving your heart a little fuller than before. The storyline is relatively straightforward, yet it's beautifully executed in a way that breathes a palpable life into each character and every scene. The film's setting, the 1970s, is captured with a sense of brilliance and authenticity that transport you back in time. The arcs of sensibility and chemistry between the characters grow on you as you watch their journey unfold. The film's runtime of 133 minutes feels like a swift, captivating journey rather than a drawn-out narrative. The powerful performances by the central leads, storytelling that feels personal, and the charming chemistry between the characters make this a wonderful Christmas film.

1. Heartwarming 1970s film: The film's setting, the 1970s, is captured with a sense of brilliance , subtlety and authenticity that transport you back in time. The film doesn't claim to be a comedy, but the subtle humour injected into the narrative adds a layer of charm and depth.

2. Compelling characters: The plot revolves around a cranky history teacher (Paul Giamatti), a troubled student, and a grieving cook. What starts as a friction-filled teacher-student relationship gradually evolves into an endearing friendship. The arcs of sensibility and chemistry between the characters grow on you as you watch their journey unfold.

3. Thoughtful Narrative : Holdovers is an heartwarming tale of unlikely friendship which carefully takes its characters and give them their own arcs. Its so sensible yet cheerful that you fall for the characters instantly as you spend some time with them.

4. Swift and engaging: The film's runtime of 133 minutes feels like a swift, captivating journey rather than a drawn-out narrative. Feels like a smooth buttery screenplay transporting you in the 1970s and you dont need to exercise your brains and enjoy a film.

5. Oscar-worthy performances: Paul Giamatti, in his portrayal of Paul Hunham, delivers a performance that is nothing short of magnetic. His brilliant acting justifies why he is often termed ingenious. He brings a depth to his character that feels authentic and relatable, making it easy for the audience to root for him. Dominic Tessa, as Angus Tully, encapsulates his character's loneliness, frustration, and excitement with a performance that is exceptional. He is a bright star in the making. Da'vine Joy equally supportive and well acted.

Merry Christmas is a satisfying Sriram Raghavan venture with a deliciously crafted romance in form of sumptuous mystery

My Rating : 80/100

Sriram Raghavan unique style of presenting dark humour and crime is separate genre in itself. After films like Andhadhun, Badlapur made for matured audience , he delivers a Christmas project which is thoroughly enticing and entertaining. Merry Christmas is satisfying one night story of 2 strangers attracted towards each other which turns out to be a bloody thriller post interval. The film falls in a niche category of slow burn thrillers which demands attention and not for people looking for engagement in every frame. The first half is purely a setup in progress for a wild ride coming in 2nd half. Powered by brilliant Vijay Sethupathy, a formidable Katrina and a tightly edited runtime , Sriram Raghavan delivers a film which has a solid heart and fitting climax which makes worth all the wait. The music is magical by Pritam especially the songs Nazar Teri Toofan by Papon and Raat Akeli Thi by Arijit. Beautifully integrated into the screenplay.

I was apprehensive about pairing of Vijay and Katrina but how beautifully and organically the romance is presented in the first half is what makes Raghavan Sir a celebrated director. Vijay Sethupathy with his distinct sarcastic humour and sharp expressions wins me over again. While Katrina has shown great command over her hindi dialogues and has also given a performance she would later be proud of. Vinay Pathak and Pratima Kannan in an extended cameo make the film interestingly exciting towards the climax. Baby Pari Sharmaos adorable.

Overall, there are few things to keep in mind before you watch Merry Christmas. Don't compare with Andhadhun, its an entirely different story. Don't completely tag it as a thriller, its a romantic comedy which turns into dark thriller. The film needs more mature audience to watch it. It wont work for everyone but I really appreciate the neo noirism integrations by Raghavan Sir with multiple twists and wow monents in 2nd half.

Society of the Snow is an incredible yet harrowing survival drama exemplifying true grit and trauma

My Score : 90/100

Based on true events and a book by the same name, Society Of The Snow follows the story of a Uruguayan Rugby team whose plane crashes in the Andes Mountains while being on their way to Chile. Society of the Snow is haunting survival drama which accounts for the 70 days of the survivors in the sea of snow between the borders of Argentina and Chile. With a spine chilling screenplay and tragic events that follow, the film never feels 150mins long. I was just a hopeless spectator of the trauma the survivors went through. As gut wrenching and painful it may seem, the film efficiently exemplifies true grit and determination for survival which kept the Uruguyans going.

The cinematography is incredibly good capturing some beautiful frames of the landscape while balancing it with tight close-ups that will evoke a sense of claustrophobia in you too. The editing is crisp and sharp wherein the length of the drama never bothered me. Director J. A. Bayona has excelled in focusing on the event rather than deep diving into character studies. His direction is top notch. Its a crime not to highlight the excellent sound design which shifts gears with tragic turn of events. Ensemble performances are fantastic and make it more realistic. The conversations are emotional and dialogues are equally well written which leaves a lasting impression.

Overall, With a runtime of 145mins Society of the Snow shines as one of the most eventful screenplays of the genre that makes you gasp for your breath at various junctures of the narrative. It is intense, harsh and quite overwhelming thus making for an intriguing and incredible watch. Survival dramas at its finest. Spain's Official Entry to the Academy Awards this year and I cant agree more.

Hi Nanna (2023)

Hi Nanna is a reaffirming tale of love & resilience which is heartwarming and endearing throughout
5 January 2024
Hi Nanna is a reaffirming tale of love & resilience which is heartwarming and endearing throughout

My Rating : (86/100)

Hi Nanna is a poignant journey of a single father which is heartfelt and feel good in its entirety. Director Shouryuv 's debut film and he has done a marvelous job in telling a well written story. The most beautiful part of the film is it's rich music, scored by Hesham Abdul Wahab. His work definitely enhanced the emotional journey. The screenplay is well done, but many unnecessary scenes seemed forced, just like that idiotic Shruti Hasan song but Nani holds the fort which a charming and magnetic performance and the raw emotions make it a difficult film to dislike.

Nani is truly admirable because his choices of film needs a lot of praise. He is commendable, be it scenes of him being excited in love or being practical about his situation he shines in all the frames he comes in. The little kid Kiara Khanna cuteness and her innocence is what the film scores high on too. She is just adorable throughout. Mrunal has done a commendable job as for someone who doesn't know the language, her lip sync with the Telugu artist is extremely believable. Priyadarshi and Jayaram fantastic supporting performances.

Overall, Hi Nanna is no masterpiece nor a film with minimal flaws, but what it strives to achieve is entertain the audience with a wholesome emotional story and it's does that quite well. Urge you to watch this, if dramatic family movies with romance is your liking. I was pleasantly surprised.

Animal (I) (2023)
8/10
Ranbir Kapoor preaches dominance in this wild, unhinged & blood soaked rampage of an obsessed son with umpteen shades of gray
3 December 2023
Animal is an unapologetic display of cinematic brilliance which by far will be the most polarising film of the year. Witnessed absolute carnage when the insanely choreographed interval block comes. Worth your money. Vanga's book of filmaking is certainly defies Indian School of filmaking as it breaks all stereotypes and challenges the critics with a more wierd and lunatic approach. A father son bond carved in blood, an obsessed son seeking the only validation from his father, power hungry dynamics within the family and conflicting relationship of the protagonist with his wife serves the core of the film. In short, Ranbir embodies the character by heart and delivers a riveting performance for film schools to make a case study of. Sandeep Reddy Vanga restablishes himself as director who defies all odds and keeps no stone unturned when he adds the grays to his lead characters. While the film shines because of the leading man Ranbir, exceptional music and the 2 stylishly choreographed action set pieces and obviously the meticulously written dialogues. What's dissapointing is the underdeveloped antagonists and a stretched husband wife dynamic which stretches a tad too long.

Performances

When Vanga said this is what violence means, we never expected this much mayhem. Ranbir Kapoor has outshined every other actor in the fraternity with this haunting and consumed characterisation. His dialogues, multiple looks and rage is a force to reckon with. Rashmika however trolled she might have been , she is quite formidable in scenes she had to deliver. There is a serious problem in her Hindi diction which may have affected her performance a bit. Anil Kapoor exceptional as he also presents vulnerability and disagreements when required. The heartbreaking fact is the Lord Bobby is criminally given less screen time and that will be debated by everyone. His screen presence is just terrorizing for the spectators. Missed Opportunity. Tripti Dimri is magical onscreen. Wished she was Bhabhi no.1.

Music and Background Score

The music is given by Vishal Mishra and Manan Bharadwaj. They have literally given gems as songs and the integration of the songs is extremely surreal. Credita to Vanga , being a Telugu speaking Director has got this on point. Be that a hardcore Arjan Vailly during the Interval block, a mesmerizing Hua Main , a resonating Papa Meri Jaan or the love song of the year Pehle Bhi Main. Each song and beats during the dramatic turn of events is magical and adds a crucial part of the screenplay.

Questionable Glorification of A Criminal

In Vanga's world , ethics and morality have always been the backbenchers. He writes obsessive characters whether its Kabir for Preeti or Vijay for Balbir, there is no right or wrong. While the obsession to safeguard his father is justifiable to some extent, the dominating and edgy dynamics between Ranbir and Rashmika is something not easily digestible. There is a sense of wierdness which Vanga loves to introduce which is voluntary. He knows moments which will trigger critics, audiences and help create more buzz and debates which eventually helps in box office footfalls. Vanga is a smart man. The writing is brilliant except some underused chacaters, while many may not share the same feeling as me , the dynamics of power leading to all the chaos is rightfully justified.

Watch or Not?

The film is a ticking time bomb, which has everything you have not expected from a Bollywood film. Breaks every stereotype unabashedly courtesy Vanga Sir. If you are a person who gets easily triggered, or has set standards how far a film's scenes are limited to, have allergies seeing bloodshed then stay away from this. If you are a Vanga fan, Ranbir Fan or a fan of unique storytelling without getting influenced then Animal deserves your time. Our country is filled with emotionally weak individuals and cinema has a lot of influence. The tone of the sexism should always be in check when you cater to such large emotional audience. I am afraid if people will draw inspiration from Ranbir's character instead of just watching it for entertainment. That will be a loss for Indian Cinema. Watch with care.

YRF's first web series is enthralling, engaging and shattering , buoyed by exceptional screenplay and performances

My Rating : (86/100)

The Railway Men highlights the unwavering spirit and courage shown by the unsung heroes of the railways on the dreadful night of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The four episode mini series skillfully merges real pictures and snippets of the tragedy with dramatized visuals. The excellent production design exemplifies YRF was serious with the subject at hand and leaves no stone unturned. The inspiring cast is enough for you to just binge watch it at one go just like I did. The writing of this disaster drama is tight with ample moments of thrill, tension and emotions. The show isnt a masterpiece, but it certainly encapsulates tragic incident in a more mature way.

Kay Kay Menon is one fine actor and his versatility speaks louder with each of his performance. R Madhavan is outstanding and his presence itself gives positive vibes. With shades of Irffan Khan his son Babil deserves a special mention. Babil is fantastic considering he being a new comer. Divyendu Sharma is a fine actor and he does complete justice to his role. So refreshing to see the beautiful Juhi Chawla in an extended special appearance.

Overall, The Railway Men is definitely worth a watch simply due to its inspiring storyline, fantastic production, marvelous acting performances and gripping screenplay.

Dream Girl 2 (2023)

Ayushmann Khurrana shoulders this vintage bollywood comedy which is hilarious but also drags beyond its limit

My Rating : (55/100)

Dream Girl 2 is combination of vintage bollywood gags and hilarious dialogues which keeps the audience chuckling throughout but doesn't stand out due to its dated plot and mid execution. Ayushmann Khurrana shoulders the entire film which his charming presence and makes his adventure of Pooja/Karam believable in the most absurd of situations. The film cast is the ensemble of all the comedic actors from Priyadarshan's universe and they are given excellent parts during the series of gags. Dialogue writers Naresh Kathooria and Raaj Shandilyaa have penned some hilarious lines which will resonate with the masses, but its the wafer thin plot which makes this a strict one timer. The runtime is short which serves as a good stressbuster.

Ayushmann sparkles in every scene and proves his versatility yet again. Vijay Raaz is an absolute hoot as Sajjan Tiwari, the owner of the bar where Pooja finds employment. Paresh Rawal, Abhishek Banerjee, Annu Kapoor and Rajpal Yadav are as dependable as ever. Ranjan Raj as Tiger Pandey steals the show with his iconic moments. Still wondering why Ananya Pandey was even there in this film. The lead pair chemistry was just forgettable and forced.

Dream Girl 2 with its zany plot and sharply placed moments of gags will keep you chuckling and giggling and it's humour might appeal to many. But the story is where this film fails and stays mid. Still if you have nothing great to watch, watch it for Ayushmann Khurrana's mad performance and all the laughs it packs.

OMG 2 (2023)

Pankaj Tripathi dominates in the quintessential film talking about a bold subject with a hillarious and thought provoking execution
13 August 2023
Pankaj Tripathi dominates in the quintessential film talking about a bold subject with a hillarious and thought provoking execution.

My Rating : (82/100)

OMG 2 is a sequel of popular film OMG which Paresh Rawal and Akshay kumar back in 2012. Unlike its predecessor which talked about atheism , the current talks about belief and faith in God. The film primarily delivers a strong social message and pleas for immediate reforms in the Education System constructed by the British during their term before independence. The humour is excellent & is spiced with sarcasm and wit, credits to the writer director Amit Rai that his execution with all the dialogues are on the money. All characters felt organic, and matter is handled with complete care and based on facts. Pankaj Tripathi is excellent, Akshay is sharp and appropriate for the role and the entire ensemble delivers an engaging affair which doesn't let you loose grip on the subject. A smartly executed, important film which will resonate with the millenials. Expect many thought provoking introspection as the film challenges unconventional norms. This film deserves your attention.

The film rides high especially due to its organic ensemble casting. Akshay Kumar as Shiva's is the best thing happening to the film. Even with a short screen presence he delivers the reminiscence from the predecessor and impact this film needed. Pankaj Tripathi is a bonafide star, he never dissapoints when he does drama and this like no other is one of his best works. Yami Gautam is pitch perfect in role, she delivers strong points with ease and delivers a challenging role with brilliance. The dialogues and wit in humour generated the loudest of cheers in the cinema screen I was in, and I pitched in too.

Overall, a much needed and important films which should be presented back to back woth such storytelling untill the reforms are made. There have been smaller projects talking about this subject but no changes are made till now. This time the problem needs addressing. A film you can take your family and enjoy. CBFC giving it an A certificate is the dumbest thing possible which highlights how backward the mentality is. Recommended.

Karan Johar's latest gives you all the right flavours of quienessential bollywood making it a perfect entertainer

My Rating : 80/100

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani serves you with everything Bollywood is famous for and rightfully presented by one true Bollywood fan, i.e Karan Johar. It has the lavish set designs, glowing chartbusters, wicked and fresh humour and innumerable callbacks to his older filmography. The film even though progressive becomes preachy many a times but Karan blends humour, style and comfort music from the past to keep the tempo and depth of the film alive. Ranveer Ranveer steals the show with his versatile whacky performance and Alia doesn't dissapointment eithet. The humour is excellent and music even though not the best from Pritam surely keeps you hooked. Ranveer and Alia's chemistry takes a backseat when powerpacked ensemble cast steal the limelight. Impactful supporting performances by the entire cast. This one surely is made for all the families who are fans of good ol bollywood films.

The film made me so glad to see Ranveer back as show stealer, just gave me the vibes of his flamboyance in his debut in Band Baaja Baraat. Give him a difficult role and he delivers it with ease. The dynamics of his performance may give him a lot of nominations next year. Alia is versatile and her performance is equally convincing. The ensemble cast is excellent. Not taking names specifically but everyone is just so good. Thw film even being long at 169 minutes never has any dull moment, yes the first half can be a bit cringy but it can be easily overlooked. Second half has the depth which carries it over the line.

Overall, Karan delivers a film with all you expect from Bollywood and why its famous for. Even while Karan wildly supports nepotism, he even gave special appearances to all modern day nepo kids which is bold and much like Karan. But in the meanwhile he still delivers a film worth loving and enjoying. This one is a winner and all true Bollywood fans will enjoy it.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

23 July 2023
Christopher Nolan delivers an emphatic characterization of the most dreaded scientists in history with aplomb

My Rating : (85/100)

Oppenheimer is a deep, engrossing and captivating piece of cinema, powered by a remarkable sound design , intense drama and strong performances. It delivers a sense of horror and tension which binds the entire narrative of 3 hours, with powerful people people talking most of its runtime. This Nolan film apologetically as usual packs in a lot of information, names and complexity which might need a second viewing to get a complete understanding and may be overwhelming for people watching a Nolan film for first time. Cillian Murphy gives a performance which gives him the oscars next year. He just sinks into the character with a facile demonstration of how well versed he is with his craft. Oppenheimer might not be Nolan's best work but its one the best biopics I have seen in recent years.

A gripe for me was the use of Bhagwat Gita while a character is having sex, this demeans the spiritual beliefs of Hindus to a certain extent. I could be more critical of it considering that scene wasn't necessary in the entire context of the film or it could have been hidden from the final cuts running in India. However a filmaker as huge as Nolan, could have been more sensitive to deliver such a scene. Oh I get it, its just a movie but there a difference between usual cinema and Nolan's films. We learn a lot from him filmography hence a concern. However, special mentions to Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon and Emily Blunt for their fantastic support performances in the film.

Overall, Oppenheimer delivers a biopic with great and overwhelming detail, scorching score and powerful visuals of the chain reaction it lead to. There's no denying how dangerous the power could have been if it was only in the hands of the US. Now 9 countries including India and Pakistan are nuclear powers. If you want to understand the origin, then don't miss this film. Recommended.

Kohrra (2023– )

Barun Sobti's latest mystery is evocative, captivating and easily one of the most compelling shows of this year
16 July 2023
Kohrra is a hard-hitting and unapologetic murder mysteries which doesn't shy away from the harsh truths of Punjab. While the captivating screenplay sinks you in with its powerful writing and masterful performanaces, it also focuses on some the unspoken issues of a common Punjabi household. The casting is stellar and so are the performanaces. The show is a slow burn but still is engrossing and magnetic while it sheds the layers of the mystery. With just 6 episodes, the strong imagery, raw and rustic cinematography places it as a compelling binge.

The show is very well directed by Randeep Jha and written by Gunjit Chopra. Each character is flawed and is fighting personal conflicts while the mystery unravels simultaneously. Starting from the drug abuse in the streets of Punjab, the urge to marry off burdened girls to NRIs and certain levels of patriarchy, Kohrra shows the true side of a dark reality. Barun Sobti and Suvinder Vicky are exceptional and truly deserves all the praise. Hard hitting shows doesn't come often, this is a must watch.

Overall, if you are a fan of slow burn mysteries which takes its own time to get solved while also following the conflicts of thr investigating officers then this is a must watch. Netflix please bring such shows. Barun Sobti killing it in 2023.

At 61, Tom Cruise still takes our breathe away and makes our money's worth at theatres.

My Rating : 97/100

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 is an exhilarating experience bolstered by a magnetic Tom Cruise leading us to yet another Impossible mission. With welcome additions of Hayley Atwell and Esai Morales, the plot is more relevant , plausible and alarming at the same time. The film as usual packs death defining set pieces which the franchise deliberately adds to push the envelope of action and entertainment. The refreshing and hilarious chemistry between Tom, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames makes you giggle from time to time while the seriousness of the film still stays intact. Tom Cruise is a true box office giant and there's no denying that. After Top Gun Maverick last summer this summer he gives us another entertainer worth your time. Christopher McQuarie understands that this franchise is just not about unbelievable action hence he adds a fairly plausible plot and packs it with a lot of twists. We have another adrenaline pumping blockbuster which deserves your love.

The film is not just about action even the screenplay is written with a lot of care to develop the story. The action pieces are well choreographed and are realistic for most part of it. The Rome car chase and final Austrian Alps train scene both are breathtaking. Hayley Atwell is one fantastic addition to the franchise and she deserves a place, she is charming and magnetic and her acting is so real. Tom is just amazing and there's nothing we can give this giy and he can't do. At 61, he makes us feel old.

Overall, if you have been a MI fan then you wouldn't care to read through this review and go buy a ticket and if you haven't watched Tom doing the impossible earlier, I am not sure what more can I write to convince you.

Flamin' Hot is a sizzling cinematic delight which is subtle, feel-good and heartwarming.

My Rating : 85/100

Flamin' Hot is a delightfully written , inspiring true story of a janitor Richard Montañez , who revolutionized the snacking industry by channeling his mexican heritage to develop the Flamin Hot lineup in the Frito-Lay's range of snacks. The film beautifully transcends us to the 1990s , and gives us the taste of the flamboyant mexican vibes. With a hilarious screenplay and charming drama, Flamin Hot may be devoid of all the actual facts but it certainly sets itself apart from the regular boring biographies out there. Its presentation is what makes it delightfully entertaining. The organic relationship between Richard and his wife and also the tustle with own father all contribute to a heartfelt drama.

Jesse Garcia is the heart of the film and he delivers a solid act. The innoncence and naivety he displays is both beautiful and heartfelt. Annie Gonsalez provides the rock solid support to Jesse as his wife and she is one beautiful actress who can act. The music, imaginary screenplays and the emotional conflicts of the film truly works in its favour.

Overall, a feel-good, heartwarming ode to a revolutionary man whose journey is inspiring on how he held on to his roots and took pride in his identity. I am reading that the facts shownin the are not entirely true but do I really care ? If a movie makes you feel good while inspiring you then its a film worth your time.

Despite being familiar, Nimona is a smashing entertainer in terms of all aspects in animation filmaking

My Rating : 82/100

Nimona was a quirky, delightful and heartfelt experience. In terms of an animation film it wonderfully weaves multiple genres into one, fulfilling all that you expect from it. Packed with visually refreshing action, engaging drama , wacky hunour and an emotional flashback the film leaves you overwhelmed. The stylized world of modern civilization guarded by Kinights is as refreshing as it sounds. The pacing is fantastic and keeps you engaged and invested in the mystery of the premise..The credit mostly goes to the screenwriters and voice artists who have done an impressive job to make this usual film of Good vs Evil into a film worth remembering and revisiting. It explores a brave step in support towards the queer community which is commendable.

Overall, a fantastic addition to the list of best films of the year which oozes out all the emotions residing within you. A highly recommended Animation streaming on Netflix.

Adhura (2023)

Prime Video's latest horror mystery is a bland & tedious addition despite commendable Ishwak Singh and Rasika Duggal.

My Rating : 60/100

Adhura had the potential to become an engrossing horror mystery. The spooky atmospheric tension of a boarding school in the woods, a looming mystery and school reunion after 15 years, all had the making of a brilliant indian show but the generic and tedious writing and forced addition of jumpscares makes it an underwhelming experience. The show is stretched to an excruciating level where you don't even care about the mystery anymore. It has a lot of spooky moments and sometimes its just exhausting through the 7 long episodes. The cinematography and color grading is excellent and the score is fantastic and intriguing as well. Ishwak Singh is such a brilliant actor, the most believable actor in the entire show. But its the unconvincing performances and forced horror which tests your patience. You can definitely try this one for some good spooky moments.

The story had a decent amount of mystery which was well built initially but certainly fails to keep my attention for long. The casting seemed off and the performanaces left me baffling. Baring Rasika Duggal and Ishwak Singh's fantastic layered perfomance and Shrenik Arora's promising and innocent effort, the entire cast has a done a poor job. The subplots aren't explored vividly in the entire show which leaves many questions unanswered. The show is stretched, predictable for the most of its runtime and thankfully finishes its storyline in single season.

Overall, a passable horror mystery for those who are horror fanatics and watch shows ocassionaly, but is a painfully boring show for those to consume a lot of content of this genre.

Extraction II (2023)

Sam Hargrave's Extraction 2 is bigger, meaner and more ambitious than its predecessor

My Rating : 78/100

Extraction 2 is an unapologetic sequel delivering high octane action and more nuanced drama that the first keeping us engrossed for the most part of it. With much bigger and meaner action set pieces and an exhilarating screenplay it delivers the right adrenaline rush for the genre lovers. While the film is divided into three stunning actions scenes, the prison breakout sequence clocks a whopping 20min one take which is breathtaking and unbelievable to say the least. The screenplay takes its time, while the creative liberties of Sam Hargrave pushes him to more edges to give something different for the audiences. The underwhelming third act just boils the entire setup down. Overall a brilliant one time watch just for that epic 20min one take.

While the drama around Tyler's son unravels more this time , Hemsworth gives yet another banger of a performance so solidify his position as a brilliant action hero. His accent during conversations and the screen presence during the hand to hand battles is just irresistible. While Golshifteh Farahani provides excellent support to Chris while she does a considerable amount of action herself. Adam Bessa is equally convincing .

Overall, Extraction 2 is a solid action film which lives by its legacy of giving us no nonsense action with a grounded plot and Chris meaning business. Sam Hargrave's sequel is a great testimony of his brilliant action direction and Extraction 3 will be no different. This is one is a no brainer if you really love to see great action on-screen.

Adipurush (2023)

Besides a soulful score by Ajay Atul, this adaptation of Ramayana is a baffling and collosal dissapointment.

Warning: Spoilers
Besides a soulful score by Ajay Atul, this adaptation of Ramayana is a baffling and collosal dissapointment.

My Rating : 15/100

Adipurush is a disgusting mockery of a beloved and celebrated chapter of Indian Mythology. Baring the intimidating Sharad Kelkar's voice and Ajay Atul's profound score, nothing really clicks in this modern adaptation. Om Raut's precarious attempt is a monumental disaster in every aspects of filmaking. Starting from the caricaturish character design of Raavan, cartoonish rendering of the banar sena , cringe dialogues & hurried screenplay everything forces us to bash this misfire. Some salvageable performanaces by Kriti Sanon and Devdatta Nage isnt quite enough to save this project. A mere cash-grabbing project with no acknowledgement of the source material , relying only to play with the Indian sentiments is the prime idea behind this.

A proper case of poor casting, whoever decided to cast the stone faced Prabhas to portray the vibrant character of Ram should be easily disbanded from his casting career. A complete misfit as he stirs through with no expressions on his face. Entire film is shot in dark, in order to hide the already flawed CGI. Thor's Asgard is colour graded to black and they have the new Lanka. Wtf are you serious Om Raut? The entire films goes by and i couldn't find anything which i could have related or brought back home. A tiring adaptation to say the least.

Overall, if you wish to see this film even if you re a Prabhas fan, you will be largely dissapointed. Only Prasanth Neel's Salaar can revive his degrading career. My suggestion would be to skip this in Theatres and show your kids the Yugo Sako animated version of The Legend of Prince Rama or Ramanand Sagar's version if ever you want them to learn this beautiful epic.

This hitman thriller is a gripping and energetic action extravaganza full of tastefully crafted frenzy

My Rating : 78/100

Deliver Us from Evil delivers a no-nonsense, action thriller filled with fantastically choreographed set pieces, brutal fistfights and enthralling gun fights. The film offers very little in its plot to be distinguished from other Hitman thrillers but its the execution that makes this a riveting actioner and a box office success in South Korea. The screenplay is written by the person who wrote The Chaser, Hong Won-chan and he inculcates deeply engrossing sub-plots and building it up for a fitting climax. There is a lot of bloodfilled set pieces which are extremely convincing and well done. Despite the age, Hwang Jun-min (The Point Men) and Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) perform deliciously crafted stunts and theit face-off comes in as the best part of the film. Hwang Jun is fantastic as the retired contract killer and as usual speaks less, is ruthless and deeply emotional. He gives a solid act. On the other hand, I see Lee Jung in Japanese Yazuka avatar and Oh God he strkes so hard as one. The character is intimidating and menacing and he delivers it with ease. Park Jeong-min aa Yoo-yi is unidentifiable, he provides the right amount of cheese and solidity as a support.

Overall, its difficult to deny that Koreans do action much better than anywhere in the world. This is justified in the film. Its no nonsense actioner with a predictable but riveting premise delivering the right amount of adrenaline rush you asked for.

A Competent Drama which explores the events leading to the rise of social networking giant.

A Competent Drama which explores the events leading to the rise of social networking giant.

My Rating : (65/100)

The Social Network is a biographical drama which highlights the trials and tribulations faced by Mark Zuckerberg while he embarks on the journey to make Facebook big. How the conflicts between the three founders including Eduardo Saverin and Sean Parker lead to the multiple trails and leads to Mark paying up for the mess they were into. This David Fincher directorial tries to establish the story from Eduardo's POV and keeps you fairly engaged with its dump of information in a fast paced manner. Wonder if the creative liberty of Fincher made Jesse Eisenberg speak so damn fast or that Mark usually used to speak like that. The performanaces are noteworthy. Baring the fast paced dialogur deliveries of Jesse Eisenberg, he is likeable and does put in the sarcasm nicely. Andrew Garfield as Eduardo is my favourite. He literally kills it with a dominating final act. Justin Timberlake is good too. Overall, the social network is a fairly decent true story which talks about the trials faced by Mark rather than highlighting thr challenges he faced to invent facebook.
