Footloose (2011)
Is the remake better?
Well, if I hadn't seen the remake before the original I would have been more impressed with the original. Seeing them back to back the 2011 version is in my opinion a better movie. But if I had seen the original movie first, there is not enough reason for a remake. Same play, different actors. They didn't even bother with a new script, same lines with just a tweak or two.
The Universe (2007)
You know it's going to be good
When in episode 1 they state that "In our solar system there is no bigger star than the Sun". While factually correct, as far as I know it is the only star in our solar system. That is when I stopped watching. Less than the 2 minute mark ep 1.
Top Gear: Episode #27.4 (2019)
Can't be bothered
Was going to comment about self centred whinging poms, but this episode doesn't deserve that much attention.
District 9 (2009)
Hmm... Is there a story in there?
Didn't know what to expect from this movie, was pretty much a blind selection at K-mart. While production and cinematic values are high, can't fault it, I'm not so sure about the story line.
There are overtones and I suppose direct analogies to the racial problems that inflicted South Africa for a lot of it's past. I guess that it was based in SA for that very reason. But why? We all know what SA was like, racial vilification has occurred in many places in the world, SA is just too obvious a connection. Black ghettos in the US might have had more of an impact.
As for the actual story line, what was the goal of the alien ship's presence? No malice was shown other than SA officer's not liking outsiders.
Seems like the plot is missing - we have displaced aliens that don't seem to have a goal and we have white supremacists, once again keeping SA white. Political message, not entertainment.
White conformist falls in love with a coloured outsider or alien's right to live - stereotypical story of South Africa's past.
Summary - entertaining, but missing a punch.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
When a movie becomes part of culture.
Rocky Horror, what can I say. It has lasted 30 years as a cult movie. I remember the first time I saw it when I was at Uni about 25 years ago, since then I guess I have seen it at least 15 times. It is always viewable and enjoyable, brings back memories of people around me at the time that I have lost contact with and the 3rd grade theaters that it used to show in twice a week. I think most of the enjoyment came from the audience participation more so than the movie itself but it was the cause. The few "Sweet Transvestities" that would get dressed up and the more normal crowd that would take along newspapers, rice, water pistols etc to shower the crowd with. What other movie has created such a following? It became a participation movie, whether designed or not - it did. Also it opened a few eyes to what is normal, gay, or other without ramming it down your throat. Live, love and be who you want to be..... 15 out of 10.
The Alice (2004)
Mostly shot in Alice, but is it Alice?
Australian Drama. Hmmmm.... It may seem so corny because this is where I live, but surely Aussie drama can do a bit better than this.... the scenery is real, the characters a little unbelievable. As a mini series? Doubt you would pull the viewers on the second night. As a series (as I have heard may happen), doubt much would be shot locally in the future. Very average performances all round I thought.... Nice to see my local town on Tele tho..... The spectacular scenery is shot well, giving an idea of what the area has to offer.
What more can I say .... take in the beauty of the scenery and half an eye on the actors.
