Pink Floyd: Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 (1979)
Bricks and all
I remember Another Brick in the Wall, the video from Pink Floyd, and the mantra of we don't need no education, which is ironic because those with an education would see this as a double negative, with the effect that the line would be we need education, so maybe that's the ironic intent of Another Brick in the Wall and it's statement on state of education init.
Royalties became at play because a royalties agent, Peter Rowan, managed file a claim of 6,000 pounds on behalf of the students who sung in the chorus, including Peter Rowan. Anyway, it's hard to believe the video is 45 years old and it lives on.
Foreigner: I Want to Know What Love Is (1984)
40 years on
For some reason I've been getting nostalgic about music videos from the 1980s (e.g. Cyndi Lauper's Goonies 'R' Good Enough, Van Halen's Jump, Spandau Ballet's True, Simple Minds's Don't You (Forget About Me)) and I was getting somewhat nostalgic about Foreigner's I Want to Know What Love Is, which was released in 1984, so wow, that's 40 years ago, and this song lives on judging from the comments of fans in social media. I'd love to know who performed in the chorus at the end, and it's a shame they don't appear to get credit in imdb as they should. Anyway, I Want to Know What Love Is is worth listening to over and over again.
The Naked Truth (1995)
Veronica, Susan and Nora Too
The 1990s was famous for female-centric sitcoms, Veronica's Closet, Suddenly Susan, Cybill, Ellen (yes Ellen DeGeneres's sitcom), and of course The Naked Truth, which was unique in that it wasn't named after the lead character, Nora Wilde, played by Tea Leoni, who later married David "The X-Files" Duchovny. I remember Tom "You've Got Mail" Hanks make a cameo appearance as himself, so there was star wattage in The Naked Truth. The sitcom also starred Holland Taylor, who was famous from her supporting role in Romancing the Stone. Anyway, I managed to watch a few episodes of The Naked Truth init.
Friends: The One with the Prom Video (1996)
Axel F
I became a fan of Friends when it debuted all those years ago, like 30 years ago, wow, that long ago, and I watched most of the episodes from seasons one to four, and The One with the Prom Video is a favorite for many reasons, but especially when teenage Ross mournfully played Axel F during the prime video, and that was absolutely hilarious, and Rachel ends up with Ross. On reflection, it's amazing the on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again, on-again relationship between Ross and Rachel endured across the whole series, and fans did not tire at all I guess, and thankfully Ross and Rachel finally ended up together.
Harold Faltermeyer: Axel F (1985)
Axel F
For some reason I was thinking about Harold Faltermeyer's Axel F today because for some reason I was reflecting on some of my favorite Friends episodes, and the one where Ross played Faltermeyer's Axel F was hilarious and poignant. Also rather serendipitously I learned that the latest Beverly Hills Cop sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, will be released very soon, so wow. Anyway, I love this song, the chords, the beat and all init, and hopefully Axel F will feature prominently in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Anyway, it's hard to believe this song was released nearly 40 years ago and it lives on.
Foreigner: Cold as Ice (1977)
Cold as Ice lives on
I'm enjoying very much reflecting on the hits of the 1970s, and it's hard to believe that Cold as Ice, by Foreigner, was released nearly 50 years ago, wow, that long ago, and it lives on and on, through commercials no doubt, but also through social media. I love the power of this video, and also the simplicity of the setting, especially with the Union Pacific railway carriage. I wonder what happened to the carriage and if it's in a rock museum to commemorate that the very important fact that it was used in a Foreigner video. Also well done to Foreigner for being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Jimmy Cliff: I Can See Clearly Now (1994)
30 years on
It's hard to believe Jimmy Cliff's famous cover of I Can See Clearly Now is 30 years old, and it endures, more famously because it was on the soundtrack of the endearing and memorable movie Cool Runnings directed by Jon Turteltaub. Even though I Can See Clearly Now isn't specifically about bobsleighing per se, somehow it's association with Cool Runnings stays with us, and in many ways that's the hallmark of a soundtrack song, for example, the songs on the Top Gun soundtrack didn't recite the words top gun or the like. Anyway, three decades on, I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff lives on init.
Pat Benatar: Love Is a Battlefield (1983)
Love is a battlefield
I remember watching Pat Benatar's video Love is a Battlefield when it debuted in 1983, just one year before the L. A. Olympics, and in the same year that The A-Team debuted. Anyway, it's amazing to recall that Love is a Battlefield debuted over 40 years ago, wow, that long ago, and it endures for sure. The video tells an emotional story, being directed by Bob Giraldi. Pat Benatar plays the runaway teenager (I learned on the internet that she was 30 at the time), and Trey Wilson played the father. I sometimes wondered whether the teenager in the video managed to make peace with her father init.
Pat Benatar: We Belong (1984)
40 years on
Pat Benatar's We Belong was released in 1984, one year after the release of her seminal hit Love is a Battlefield, so it's hard to believe it was that long ago, 40 years, and We Belong endures, and I heard from someone in Australia that the national broadcaster there used the song for their promos, so We Belong has much influence around the world init. There is an uplifting beat and spirit to We Belong, and you can imagine a school choir singing this at their graduation ceremony with inclusiveness and all, along with belonging, hence the use of We Belong. Definitely We Belong is worth listening to.
Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)
Wayne's World
What can I say about Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody that hasn't been written before, but anyway, it's hard to believe this mind-bending and awesome song was released nearly 50 years ago, wow, that long ago, and it's been entertaining audiences from one generation to the next. Anyway, of course Wayne's World, which was released in the early 1990s allowed a new generation of movie fans to lap up this amazing song, and also at a Green Day concert, the audience sung along to Bohemian Rhapsody. Anyway, sure the lyrics aren't supposed to make complete sense, but so what, it's Bohemian Rhapsody and all init.
Queen: Another One Bites the Dust (1980)
The Junkyard Dog's theme
I remember way back in the 1980s, Sylvester Ritter, famously known as the World Wrestling Federation wrestler Junkyard Dog, used Queen's Another One Bites the Dust as his entry song whenever he entered the ring, an the crowd went wild. I think the song's association with the Junkyard Dog greatly opened doors for Queen in the professional wrestling world and greater acceptance. Anyway, this song is a perennial classic for sure, so whenever a team scores a goal or knocks out an opponent, you name it, Another One Bites the Dust will play init, and for good reason, because the audience goes wild init.
Fresh Off the Boat: Pilot (2015)
The beginning
I became a fan of Fresh Off the Boat when it debuted nearly a decade ago, and it certainly had a fresh approach in the way that minority groups were represented in primetime television, and all credit to the network for having the courage to do this. Randall Park, who had a recurring role as Governor Danny Chung in Veep, heads the talented cast as Louis Huang. Constance Wu, before she became a massive movie superstar, plays Jessica Huang. I remember Forrest Wheeler in the Community episode G. I. Jeff before he starred in Fresh Off the Boat. Anyway, I think I managed to watch most of the episodes of this fine series.
Fresh Off the Boat: Michael Chang Fever (2016)
Guest starring Billie Jean King
Billie Jean King is an enormous tennis legend, whose performances transcend the cultural, social and other divides that set us apart, and here Billie Jean King guest stars in Michael Chang Fever, from Fresh Off the Boat. Here Louis and Jessica think that Emery can be the next Michael Chang, who famously won the 1989 French Open when he was barely 17 years old.
Anyway, I became a huge fan of Fresh Off the Boat when it debuted nearly a decade ago, and I think I managed to see every episode, and this one, Michael Chang Fever, brings back the memories of when Michael Chang reigned supreme at the French Open as the US champion.
Fresh Off the Boat: Blind Spot (2015)
Louis, Jessica and Oscar Too
Not that there's anything wrong with that, the famous line from The Outing, the very famous Seinfeld episode from season four, is pretty much what Blind Spot, from the first season of Fresh Off the Boat is about, because here Jessica thinks that her old college friend, Oscar still has feelings for her, and Jessica wants it made known to Louis in his face, but guess what, Louis is quite nonchalant about it, and really the twist here is that Oscar plays for the other team and he has always been very, very attracted to Louis. Anyway, I became a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat when it debuted, and all credit to the quality it maintained throughout.
Blondie: Heart of Glass (1979)
Pure classic
I remember watching Blondie's music video Heart of Glass as we wrapped up the 1970s, and here was Blondie bridging us to the 1980s and what was going to come with that. Anyway, it's a testament to Debbie Harry that the two previous imdb user reviews for Heart of Glass was posted in 2022 and 2023, and that says much about the enduring power of Heart of Glass. The video was directed by Stanley Dorfman in a nightclub, but not Studio 54. Debbie Harry's silver asymmetrical dress was designed by Stephen Sprouse. Anyway, do yourself a favor and watch Blondie's Heart of Glass and be prepared to sing along.
Glee: Pilot (2009)
Don't stop believin'
I remember being a fan of Glee not long after it debuted to much fanfare, and anyway, the Pilot episode was amazing with the rendition of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' which did much to give the song a new lease of life soon after it already had a lease of life with The Sopranos's series finale, Made in America.
Believe it or not, I actually bought some CDs of Glee songs (this was just before CDs became wiped out of the market) because I liked Glee, especially the first three or so seasons init.
Stephen Tobolowsky guest stars as Sandy Ryerson in this episode. He always adds value to any movie or TV episode.
Glee (2009)
Uplifting
I became a fan of Glee soon after it debuted, and there was a lot of buzz and excitement to this series that injected new life into glee clubs. In fact I even bought some CDs of Glee songs (this was just before CDs became extinct pretty much), and there was so much energy and all, especially with Don't Stop Believin'. I must admit the first three or so reasons were strong and worth watching, but my interest kind of tapered off after that, but maybe I need to do a binge of the rest of Glee. Anyway, the, Dan Harmon pretty much put Glee on the table for parody with the episode Regional Holiday Music and "regionals!!". Anyway, Iqbal Theba, who played Principal Figgins in Glee also appeared in Community as Abed Nadir's father.
Fresh Off the Boat: Where Have All the Cattlemen Gone? (2018)
Trevor Larcom guest stars
Trevor Larcom was one of the major breakout supporting stars in Fresh Off the Boat, which boasted a deep bench of talented supporting actors in addition to the talented main cast of course. Trevor Larcom starred as Trent, and over time his role grew so that he became part of the Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse, but also part of the Huang family. Anyway, I know Magic Motor Inn, featuring an Indian-American family, was supposed to be the spin-off from Fresh Off the Boat, but really Trent deserved to have his own spin-off series. Anyway, it's good to see Trent in this episode, and in all he appeared in 70 episodes.
Fresh Off the Boat: The Fall Ball (2015)
Randall Park can dance
Randall Park as Louis Huang can certainly rap his way on the dance floor, as he amazingly demonstrated in The Fall Ball, during the end credits. We see Louis display his rap dance skills at the school ball, with the kids watching on in awe, as they should. Anyway, I became a fan of Fresh Off the Boat when it debuted, and seeing the ensemble cast, and seeing the career of Constance Wu pretty much explode, was so encouraging for sure init. Anyway, I miss this fine series, but I guess after six seasons it had to wrap up eventually, and it did so on a high that's for sure, so definitely worth watching.
Fresh Off the Boat: Commencement (2020)
It's a wrap
I became a big fan of Fresh off the Boat when it debuted, and after six seasons, Fresh off the Boat wrapped up in 2020, and in many ways the series (which had a controversial title) was groundbreaking for sure with the way it told the stories of the people whose faces were often marginalized on TV, so all credit to the network for going with Fresh Off the Boat. Anyway, all credit to the actors who made Fresh Off the Boat what it became, a sitcom to watch, and all credit to the writers for the ideas in each episode and the ongoing storylines that kept us in front of out screens for six seasons.
Fresh Off the Boat: The Magic Motor Inn (2020)
Spin-off maybe
The Magic Motor Inn is not only the name of this sixth season episode of Fresh off the Boat, but also the name of the putative spin-off that was suppose to arise, but sadly the spin-off didn't come to pass, which is a shame because it would have provided the perspective of an Indian-American family who run a hotel, and such a spin-off could have guest starred famous Indian-Americans such as former Louisiana Governor Piyush "Bobby" Jindal to give it a boost. Anyway, I became a big fan of Fresh off the Boat when it debuted, and it did much to bring creativity and freshness to faces that aren't ordinarily see on TV.
Fresh Off the Boat: The Gloves Are Off (2017)
Guest starring Heather Locklear
The amazing Heather Locklear plays Sarah, Marvin's ex-wife, and it ain't pretty when Jessica Huang (Constance Wu) gets involves and all, and it makes quite a sizzling episode with three's company and all. Anyway, I enjoyed very much watching Fresh Off the Boat when it debuted, as it was very groundbreaking and poked fun at stereotypes for sure, knowing when to laugh and when to kind of wonder why do we laugh at stereotypes.
The alternative title to this episode, The Gloves Are Off, could be Marvin, Honey and Sarah Too because of the triangle aspect and the romantic tension and all init. Worth watching.
Vanessa Williams: Save the Best for Last (1991)
Was in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
It's hard to believe that Vanessa Williams's Save the Best for Last debuted over 30 years ago, and being a pop hit from the 1970s, no doubt it lives on as an anthem for perseverance and strength against the odds. Save the Best for Last garnered a new following when it was featured in the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert from the 1990s. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert starred Julia Cortez as Cynthia Campos, with supporting performances by Hugo "V for Vendetta" Weaving, British actor Terence "Kneel before Zod" Stamp, and Guy "Memento" Pearce. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was directed by Stephan Elliott, who persisted as a director but nothing that is quite as memorable as this movie, so a one hit wonder.
The Rehearsal (2022)
The reality of reality TV
I can't believe I forgot to post an imdb user review for The Rehearsal, which was amazing, groundbreaking stuff from Nathan Fielder (who I sometimes get mixed up with Nathan Fillion), but anyway, for me it was the first three or so episodes that were awesome, and all credit to the performers, the writers, the production crew, everyone involved for pulling off what they did, especially as the world was pulling itself out of the pandemic. Anyway, the way the cast interacted with each other was second to none, and I wondered at times what was real, and what wasn't, and how did Nathan Fielder (not Fillion) manage to get inspired to do this.
Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist: Lil' Helper (1997)
David, Ken and Lizz Too
David Juskow's impression of British-English singer Elvis Costello was hilarious and so real. Anyway, Juskow is one of the few guests stars who doesn't appear to have a therapy session with Dr Katz, as we see him doing his spiel in front of Laura. Also joining Juskow in this episode, Lil' Helper is Ken Rogerson and Lizz Winstead, and this makes for a funny episode. Dr Katz also suffers back problems, and thankfully he recovers. Also, the trademark "You know what the music means" doesn't occur at the end of this episode, but about three minutes before. I'm enjoying watching Dr Katz now thanks to the internet.
