Iron Fist (2017)
Over all, it's "meh" which is disappointing
I don't think you can watch or review this TV show without directly comparing it to Daredevil, and to a lesser extent Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. They are all part of the MCU/Netflix universe, and both Daredevil and Ironfist are martial arts based and have a significant part of their shows involving fights against the Hand.
As such, Daredevil is the bar. It's the gold standard. Both seasons have deep characters, with good dialog, acting, choreography, and intriguing villains – it feels like a great graphic novel in placed somehow on the silver screen. Ironfist on the other hand falls flat more often than not, and feels more like a Sunday comics episode made for TV like an old episode of the Hulk or Spiderman.
The biggest drop of for me is the choreography! This is a martial arts character but everything feels like it was filmed in slow motion and then sped up. Where he fights the "Drunken Master" Hand agent is horrible and if you enjoyed the old Jackie Chan flicks you'll be groaning during the whole thing! The fight scenes in this show should have been the absolute best from the MCU/Netflix series
sadly, they are not. The Arrow has better fight scenes for instance.
Next comes the dialog and storytelling. The dialog is just bad, and the scenes are frequently so cheesy and clichéd they feel like those old marvel TV shows. An example is when Wing is about to be bested by a female Hand agent who also uses a sword, and Claire shows up just in time to jump out of her car, grab Wing's sword and toss it to her, which she of course catches out of the air without looking just in time to defeat her opponent. This feels on par to "DC Legends" as far as the overall cheese factor goes.
It does have some interesting moments and characters (Ward, Harold, and particularly Joy do a very good job with their roles), but overall it just feels very middle of the road, where nothing stands out too much but also doesn't fail too horribly. The main reason to watch this show is to be ready to watch The Defenders. It's a shame, I really wanted to love this show.
Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom (2008)
As sweet as saccharin without the after taste
I was fortunate enough to see this movie at the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival; and it was well worth it. The movie takes place a few months after the end of season two, and neatly ties up all the loose plot strings from the TV show. Everything that made the TV show so much fun is in the movie; right down to Noah's lips & Wade's rock hard
. abs.
The premise of the movie is that Wade has asked Noah to marry him in his family's house in Martha's Vineyard, and Noah has brought his ARC to keep himself afloat. (I know very punny) You have Chance & Eddie there trying to work through their issues of commitment, and boredom? Alex taking charge in a Patton-esquire manner to make sure the wedding is perfect, while still trying to keep in contact with Trey (& their new child) via laptop. Ricky and his boy toy for the weekend (one of Chance's students!) causing drama as well. Baby Gat even shows to make thing even more complicated and insane.
For the most part, the movie hits far more than it misses. It's sweet and crazy like trying to eat cotton candy dipped in caramel while hanging upside down on a tight rope! If you are in the mood for a light playful romp, then you'll enjoy this movie.
