Match Point (2005)
A good surprise
If you're going to see this movie expecting the story of a neurotic character and lots of laughs, you'll be disappointed. Match Point is Woody Allen trying something different with a great plot and script and a wonderful casting.
I'm biased, OK. I've been a Woody Allen fan for years, although I haven't liked all his movies. In his late films I was missing the mood I loved about Crimes and Misdemeanors or Husbands and Wives, and Match Point recovers it in some way, even though it's a completely different movie.
Another difference is the location. It felt strange to see an Allen movie where characters don't walk in Manhattan coming or going to a diner. Since I'm not British I can't tell if locations are good, but it sure looked very British high society to me. I mean, if it is cloudy and rainy 90% of the time and people play tennis and speak English with a strong British accent, where are you? And finally i'd like to mention how good actors are in this movie. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Scarlett Johansson have a intensity that fills the screen. I'm glad to see that not all the raising good actors are talentless Hollywood stars. There's hope for cinema.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Bad, very bad
This movie is an absolute waste of money and time. It was boring (not only for me but for my 11 yo nephew) from the beginning to the end. All actors, excepting the queen, are really bad. Even if the rest were fine (that is not the case), they would spoil the movie just by themselves. I wonder what was the casting director doing while that maniac was doing his work. The movie is slow, very very slow, and never really tells anything. The main important questions in the story remain unexplained in the end. It's just images and cgis appearing one after the other for 2 hours. The cgis were very nice to look at, though. And finally, leaving the Christian issue aside, it's a story full of clichés, and tries to perpetuate the most traditional roles. It's two couples of kids and in each couple the elder kid is a boy (woman dependency on man). There is an obvious reference to grow up(sex) and how kids should avoid it and remain pure. "Sex is bad" and "Women depend on men" aren't the ideas I want to teach my kids.
The Laramie Project (2002)
Demagogic movie
There's nothing new in this movie. Nothing you haven't thought about before, nothing you haven't heard before. The story of a gay man who is brutally murdered in a small town and the reaction of people can be broached in many ways, and this movie has chosen the most demagogic and slushy one. One of the biggest flaws in this movie is that it isn't neither a movie nor a documentary. The director has used the transcriptions of the original interviews and made the actors play them as if it was a movie. The result is weird. And finally, I read in previous comments that stated that people who don't like this movie are anti-gay. I'm pretty sure this comments come from people who consider themselves tolerant but don't tolerate that other people don't like this movie. This is a funny world.
The Winslow Boy (1999)
One of my favorites
If you're fond of good dialogs, good acting and good movies...go and rent this one. I didn't expect much when I rented it, and it was a big surprise. I don't know if this movie would work that well with a different cast, but they seem to be made to be part of it. I've read some bad comments about Rebecca Pigeon but in my opinion she's perfect for the part, she acts natural. I didn't find anything that I didn't like, which is something difficult to say about most of the movies.
Summarizing, this movie confirms that with a few exceptions, David Mamet keeps giving us something interesting in every movie. Before this one I had only seen The Spanish prisoner,
