ER (1994)
Wonderful, but it is time to bid farewell
I have watched this show since it began when I was only in the seventh grade. I am sure that I was too young in the beginning to fully appreciate the heart and motivation behind the characters but still found it to be an extremely fascinating and powerful show. I was saddened when Dr. Ross, Carol, Susan, and Dr. Greene left, though I did find most of the new characters endearing. The scenarios and heart wrenching moments are captivating, while the humor that can be found just beneath the surface can lighten even the saddest, most horrifying of moments. I love that the writers keep the show very close to reality. The action is second to none, completely unparalleled, and it has outlasted almost every other program that began in its time. However, despite the fact that there are young, fresh characters keeping the show somewhat alive, I believe it's vital signs are getting weak. ER has run its course; it is time to bid farewell and leave on a good note rather than play out all possible ends.
The Pacifier (2005)
Not the year's best picture, but good for a family laugh all the same
The Pacifier is not going to be winning any awards this year, but it is a good family film. While it is somewhat violent for a children's movie, I didn't find it to be overly so. It has an Agent Cody Banks meets Parent Trap feel to it. Vin Diesel was stiff at best, Brittany Snow was not her usual dazzling self that we are so used to seeing in American Dreams, and Tate Donovan was only in the first five minutes. There are about three dirty diaper gags, the first of which is funny, but after that those get old. But, all that aside, this movie has some hilarious physical comedy and a touching ending. I recommend it to families everywhere. I think children will enjoy the silliness, while adults will be entertained by the more mature elements in the movie. A "something for everyone" movie.
A Cinderella Story (2004)
grasping at straws...
Did we really need one more "cinderella type" story this decade? Between "Chasing Liberty", " The PRince and Me", and "The Princess Diaries" I believe that we may have that genre sufficiently covered. Like the rash of teenybopper horror movies from the late 1990's , this movie continues to beat the dead horse of an increasingly younger and more immature teen scene flick epidemic. Aside from all that, this has to be the least oscarworthy screen jaunt that I have even encountered. Hilary Duff has managed to play Lizzie Mc Guire in every movie she has been in. Her over the top valley girlesque persona is, at best, flat and lifeless. Chad Michael Murray, as cute as the boy is, has stooped to new lows. It is obvious that he is far too old for the movie, plus this is a complete departure of anything that Murray is qualified to play. The football player is a stretch for someone who is so in tune with his bad boy image. Overall, I would not recommend this movie for anyone over the age of ten. Ignorance comes with youth, and in this case ignorance to decent movie making is,without a doubt, bliss.
Troy (2004)
WOW...possibly a bit of a spoiler...reader beware
I know that the film completely departs from historical accuracy, but if we can just put that aside for the moment, we would all admit that this was a spectacular movie. Now, I realize that in a historical movie keeping with the actual story is somewhat important, but since the beginning of time, theater has required a willing suspension of disbelief. So, let's give the film makers that courtesy. Done... I was blown away by how beautiful this movie is overall. Eric Bana was sensational. He had the dark, loyal prince routine down to a T. Orlando Bloom, in turn, was fabulous as well. He truly captured the spoiled nature of Prince Paris. I was a little disappointed in Helen for the simple fact that she was too Western. I had pictured her as a dark beauty with a solemn nature, more like Hector's wife. The battle scenes were so beautiful that I found myself longing to be there watching and cheering my soldier, envious of the women on screen. This is caliber movie making in action. I recommend that anyone who didn't find themselves enraptured return to see this movie again with an open mind. You won't be disappointed!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
good action movie; needed better editors!
I have probably seen this movie 15 times. I love movies and I am terribly critical of them. When I read the goofs page on this movie, I was shocked to see how many there were. IT is not good that the editors let so many slide. But, as a whole, this is a great mindless movie. I read a review by another user that said a good movie is one that raises important issues and questions; I agree. But, there can be other kinds of good movies. This is one! Watch it with an empty mind needing entertainment and the willingness to pass off goofs by saying "it is a movie" and you will find great satisfaction in Pirates. All in all, I would call this a new classic because it appeals to the masses who generally care nothing for "great art films".
