Hayride 2 (2015)
Horror fans, don't waste your time
I'm pretty much a sucker for any kind of slasher flick, no matter how uninspired the killer or story is. Figured I'd pop this on for some Halloween low B fun while I worked out in my gym one day. I think this movie suffered from some kind of identity crisis. It was as if it didn't realize it should just embrace being a low budget slasher flick, and instead it used it's horrible actors to try to force the audience to become touchy-feely on a backstory that wasn't even provided (I doubt watching the original Hayride is going to change my opinion)... and even if it was, it wouldn't have helped them any... because of the previously mentioned horrible acting.
The moment between the nurse and one of the brothers dragged on for so long. The sad, dramatic music felt so out of place every time a character died, as the camera panned in on the anguish of the person who witnessed yet another friend die. Nothing wrong with that, if it wasn't for the fact that the writers gave us no reason to care for any of the characters. The music itself also felt off. It didn't feel like dramatic horror film music, but more like it belonged in a war movie. Once again, I have no idea what the creators were aiming for with this film.
As with even better low budget horror films, it was filled with plot holes and horror tropes to the max. One of the brothers twice tries to fight off the killer with a small knife, and both times he fails miserably. That might have been the best part of the movie, and the only sliver of a saving grace for me. The hilarity and futility of this "hero's" attempt to attack the killer.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990)
Classic kids' horror show still holds up surprisingly well
This was can't miss TV for me as a child. I would look forward to watching this show on SNICK every week. I remember being genuinely scared at times, and my parents would even watch with me and apparently also garnered some enjoyment out of the episodes. Sure it had it's campy and cheesy moments(what early 90's shows didn't?), but some of the performances by the young actors in this series were pretty decent. Many stories were based on common horror lore and myth, but some of the others were pretty original and clever as well.
Recently I have started watching this show again on Amazon Prime instant video. I expected it to be horribly campy and unwatchable now as an adult, the warm nostalgic memories being the only reason I'd watch a few episodes and be done with it... but to my surprise I was still entertained, and dare I say it... slightly spooked. Unlike the TV version of Goosebumps (completely unwatchable as an adult))this still holds up pretty well to this day. I wouldn't recommend this to any adult who doesn't already have the fond memories of the original run, as it would make for a pretty rough watch. I would however, recommend anyone with children looking to have some light, spooky, family fun to give this show a shot.
The Frozen (2012)
Horrible, just horrible
Things were going okay until the first line of dialogue was spoken. It's all downhill from there. The acting is sub-par, with the male lead far worse than the female. Both characters are unlikable and don't have any redeeming qualities that would make you root for them. There's obviously some sort of rift between the two, as they seem to have quite the disdain for each other, this especially shows from the woman.
They go into the snow packed wilderness horribly unprepared. After a snow mobile accident, they begin to see strange silent figures in the woods. The boyfriend investigates one night and disappears. The next hour is filled with a mentally draining bore of sequence after sequence of the woman brooding about, which always ends up with her back at the damn tent. This repeats itself a good dozen times it feels...before it all unravels into weird scenes from some campy slasher flick. Then it turns out she's been dead the whole time or something... my brain was fried at this point and I wasn't paying much attention.
I truly thank Netflix for adding this to their selection, and I only blame myself, and my two other family members that agreed upon this turd of a movie.
