Sarkar 3 (2017)
The Third One
Sarkar 3, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, is a dark film about 'Sarkar' Subhash Nagre, who, after the death of his son Shankar in the previous installment, is angrier than ever. The movie has a new set of enemies, a Kejriwal-esque politician, a bereaved daughter and the return of his grandson Shivaji (son of Vishnu Nagre), who has motives of his own, and how Sarkar and his trusted aides deal with the menace.
Some scenes of the movie show the talent RGV possesses, and which blew the minds of the movie-goers in the 90's. He has had a long career if making dark movies, starting from Shiva to Sarkar. But sadly, as mentioned, it is only in glimpses. Some scenes are totally absurd, and some characters are illogical. But, the movie is much better than the previous few films of RGV, which were totally unwatchable.
The dialogues of the movie are for the most part okay, but some make you roll your eyes over. I am a big fan of the "Govinda Govinda" chant, and it set the mood of the movie. The Ganpati Aarti in the movie was very well done, and a few scenes involving Subhash and Shivaji were well shot.
Coming to the performances, Amitabh Bachchan aces the role of Subhash Nagre yet again. Although some dialogues were a bit weird, Bachchan sir does a fine job. Amit Sadh as Shivaji is great too, and so is Yami Gautam as Annu. Jackie Shroff was a bit over the top and the dialogues given to him were weird and odd. Ronit Roy was intense and did a fine job with the limited dialogue. Supriya Pathak was good too.
All said and done, this movie could have been much better. But it could have been much worse, and thank God and the actors of the movie, to make sure that it wasn't.
Steve Jobs (2015)
The biopic that is a character study.
I am a big fan of Aaron Sorkin's work. I have re-watched most of his work, including the Academy Award winning "The Social Network", and the courtroom drama "A Few Good Men", and his TV shows "The West Wing", "Studio 60" and also "The Newsroom". All his movies have dialogue which feels organic, natural, and sing-song. And when I heard he would be writing the new Steve Jobs movie, and that it was to be directed by Danny Boyle, I was eagerly waiting for its release. And boy! My expectations were blown away! REMEMBER!! THIS MOVIE IS NOT A BIOPIC!! IT IS A CHARACTER STUDY!!! Everything about this movie is perfect. The casting, the performances, the set design, the background music and the dialogue, all are EXCEPTIONAL. The movie follows a three-act format, each set before the launch of an important product. Unlike the earlier Steve Jobs movie "Jobs" (which is a blow-by-blow biopic of the great man), this movie is a more intricate tale of how the man was. In a day and age where a biopic just gives you details of what happened in the subject's life, this movie comes off as a breath of fresh air. Whichever interaction one takes, whether it be between Jobs and Joanna Hoffmann, or Jobs and Lisa (his daughter), or Jobs and Wozniak, or Jobs and John Sculley, all give an in-depth look into Steve Jobs' life. But for me personally, the conversation between Jobs and John Sculley, in the one hour mark is probably one of the greatest ever sequence of dialogue I have ever seen. That scene shows the incredible talent of Aaron Sorkin, the editor Elliot Graham, the music composer Daniel Pemberton, the cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler, the director Danny Boyle and Michael Fassbender, Jeff Daniels and Kate Winslet. The performances from everyone is top-notch. As mentioned earlier, Michael Fassbender is magnificent, Kate Winslet slips into the role of Joanna Hoffman effortlessly, Seth Rogen is brilliant as Steve Wozniak, the three actresses who portrayed Lisa Brennan Jobs, were brilliant!! Amazing movie!! A perfect score!!
Special Chabbis (2013)
A very "Special" movie
This movie is truly one of the modern day classics. The quick wit, the tension and the most important part of any movie, the scripting of the movie are really good.
Based on the Opera House heist in 1987, the movie starts off with a CBI team raiding a minister's house with the help of two police officers, and when the cops realize that the minister has been conned and his black money hoarded away, the hunt to trace the fake team begins. This movie has many good things going for it. Firstly, the script. There is never a dull moment in the movie. Secondly, the dialogues. A Neeraj Pandey hallmark. It is quick witted and it is great. Thirdly, the performances. Akshay Kumar gives a brilliant performance as the leader of the pack, Anupam Kher is sublime as the nervous wreck, Manoj Bajpayee uses the deadpan to great effect, Jimmy Shergill is amazing as the cop trying to correct the wrongs. Kajal Agarwal gives a sweet performance and so does Divya Dutta. If I were to nitpick, the love track between Akshay Kumar and Kajal Agarwal, albeit nice and sweet, felt slightly unnecessary. And the songs too felt out of place. The editing is slick, and the setting is brilliant, giving you the feel of the 80's. The cinematography is great as well. And the background score is very good too. This shows that adaptations of real life incidents, in the right hands, can make for an intelligent and thrilling movie watching experience. You would not want to miss this movie.
Janatha Garage (2016)
Two great performers, one sloppy film
Genuinely, if two of the finest actors in the country get together to be a part of a movie, one shall expect nothing but brilliance. But that's not the case with Janatha Garage. So much hype around the movie, so little has it in store. The movie starts off with Sathyam (Mohanlal) imparting his form of justice to the people, under the facade of a garage, appropriately titled Janatha Garage, but personal tragedy separates him from a part of his family. After many years, Anand (Jr NTR), an environmentalist, gets into trouble with Sathyam's son. The rest of the story is how Anand is linked to Janatha Garage, and what happens next. The first half is utterly unbearable to watch, primarily because it appears to be a hodge-podge of some scenes. But, the pre-interval scene is very well done. The first half hour of the second half is interesting and good too. But it all goes downhill. And that's a shame. The gravest fault of this movie though, is the characterization of Anand. He is portrayed as an environmentalist, but rides a Royal Enfield. I was willing to excuse that, but there is a scene in the second half, where he shouts "NO MORE PARTIES", but subsequently dances to an item song. Hypocrisy much? The performances are one of the main draws of the movie. Jr. NTR does a great job, as usual, in the movie (albeit a flawed character). Some scenes show his range as an actor. Mohanlal does his role with grace and gravitas. Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menon, extremely good actors, are just reduced to eye candy, and that's sad. There's the item song featuring Kajal Agarwal, which was completely unnecessary. The cameo appearance from Rajeev Kanakala was good. The scripting was flawed, the editing was okay, and the music could've been better from DSP. The cinematography was good. All in all, this could've been a potential classic, but is reduced to a commercial masala potboiler.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)
What did I get into???
This movie is pure crap. I dunno why was this movie even made. This review may have spoilers *chuckles loudly*. This movie has nothing in terms of originality, the pacing is shoddy, the graphics are very bad, and some scenes are pure garbage, like the football scene, to which I hit my head in disgust. The acting is way over the top, and don't get me started on those rumors about Neil Nitin Mukesh. And to think that Salman Khan, who did the pretty great Bajrangi Bhaijaan, to come up with this piece of s**t, bravo! But you know, that's what he's been doing all these years. All the extravagance would be partially justified if there was at least a bit of story in it *Oh wait,Error 404: Story not found.* And it is sad that this has done pretty well in the box office, and it is bad for cinema.
1 - Nenokkadine (2014)
A different attempt which needs to be applauded.
What can I say about this movie? It simply wants the viewer to enjoy as well as experience which has never been tried. I don't want to talk about the plot as such because I might give away some spoilers, but it bears a minute semblance to Bourne Identity. All technical aspects are top notch, especially the background score. Mahesh sir's guts to accept such a script, are to be applauded. And the director Sukumar sir's script too is taut. It also has some subtle humor. All in all, a thoroughly refreshing change to a been-there-seen-that movies. But comparing it with movies like Inception is a bit too far. Both are different, and both have their own experience while watching them.
