Will Watch it Again
20 August 2019
I think I'll watch this movie again and if I do it will be for one reason, the scene at 1'07". With Miles Davis on the sound track the girl's dance against the early evening sky was one of the most mesmerizing scenes I've encountered. Right up there with the bad guy's dance across the lobby floor to the tied up guests in Bad Times at The Hotel Royale, the spontaneous dance scenes in Fame, the little tart's dance scene in the headlights at the edge of NYC harbor in Nick and Norah's Infinite Pay List. It's one to remember.

Soderbergh at his best

Warning: Spoilers
'haven't seen this film in years, what a treat to run across it in prime. Terence Stamp at his best, trying to undo the past with his daughter. Of course it's impossible, but it's a magnificent try. Solderbergh at his workmanlike best. The films moves along oh so beautifully,a treat in every way. The supporting cast is great, Guzman has what is probably his best role. The first time you see him, his face is magnificent, a full screen shot that blows your mind. Lesly Anne Warren, wow. I'm fixing a vegetarian omelet and then settling down to see an old friend, it's going to be great, you've just got to watch this.

Warning: Spoilers
Just watched the first two episodes, wow, unbelievable. I think I see where this is going and it's going to be fantastic. Oh dear, it's going to be so great, I can hardly wait. The feel of the thing, the shots in the city offices, people sitting around, the council meetings with people screaming, it so well done, it's scary, seeing those people yelling and screaming raises a lot of political, social issues, what is the right thing. Would I be screaming with them? What would you do? The mayor is pitch perfect, calm, controlled, when will he break? The old lady, what is she going to do next, everything depends on her, absolutely incredible.

Grand tragedy in coal country.

Just finished this movie and wow, totally overwhelming, sat down and cried for five minutes.

I have to watch it again to see if it's as good as I think it is, but I'm afraid to, the last scene was so incredible with voice over from the previous scene.

Oh dear it is so wonderful, I have to see it again and again.

The only other films that have done this to me are "21 Grams" which I've seen several times, and "Elephant Man" which I saw once and will never see again.

These characters were so natural, it was like you were there. So muted, tamped down, real.

I'll watch it again this evening.

Reserved Judgement

At some point early on I wanted to write this guy off as someone with more money than brains, but I decided not to do that, I decided to wait and see.

I finished the film on mubi and I'm still waiting, holding off.

I'm not sure what to make of this film, but I think it's a great film and although it's not on a par with Don Giovanni it's close.

The settings are opulent, beyond compare, desires are insatiable, it's the human condition.

Writing this makes me realize what a great film it is. He is a hedonist with more stuff than he needs, but aren't we all.

He has insatiable desire, but don't we all.

He has an incurable sickness and again don't we all.

A couple of quibbles that are not about the film at all. I watched this on 'mubi' as per above. The mubi format is a disaster, I'm sorry. By this I mean watching flash on my pc is a waste of time. When will they dump flash (everyone else has) and get into the modern age. This is a film I'd like to set aside for a few months, come back, and watch it again. The Mubi format prevents that. This is pretty much a given and it's something Mubi fans have to live with. I would happily pay more (up to $10/mo.) if they would hang onto films longer and dump flash.
