Blackball (2003)
Anyone read the US reviews of the movie.....
As our hero in this movie so aptly put it "tossers". You would think some one claiming to be a film critic would at least get their facts right before proving to all and sundry that their research was substandard to say the least.
The game depicted in the movie and referred to as bowls is in fact lawn bowls. Some Mid West critics seemed to be confused on that.
The game does not involve winning "20 rounds". For a start they are called "ends" and l believe to win you need to score 20 or 21 points depending on the competition.
And to my favourite, our hero must win his "county championship" not his "countries (sic) championship" to be able to play for England.
Even more deplorable was the attempt by some US critics to explain a game they had no idea of, it would be the equivalent to me describing baseball as "rounders with one team attempting to score more runs than the other". Clearly the game is a lot more complex than a simple statement can cover.
I am frankly appalled at the low standard of critcal analysis being displayed by some online US movie sites. By and large the reviews lack research, critical attention to the actual movie itself, (l really don't give a toss about one critic spending 2 paragraphs talking about his Blockbuster movie card), and any evidence that the reviewer has actually seen the movie (a sheep like mentality would seem to run through online reviewers).
One thing l will agree with the NY reviewer about though is that this sort of movie has been done to death, and bowls really doesn't capture the imagination as much as the film makers think it will.
If really wanting a movie on bowls, might l suggest the Australian Indie "Crackerjack".
Sabretooth (2002)
Very important movie
This movie is a milestone in the horror genre. It has finally convinced me not to buy a DVD just because it has horror on the cover and is in the sub $5 bin. So thanks to the SciFi Channel for that at least. Memo to self after moving to the US later in the year avoid that particular channel at all costs.
Had an enjoyable five minutes after working out this was nothing more than a slasher flick. Got to play who's the LGS (Last Gal Standing), only a choice of 4 and it becomes obvious 30 seconds after you decide to play the game. That left 4 and a half minutes working out who would survive.
Wont give too much away as there maybe some one in Tibet or something that will confuse this one with Scooby Doo 3 and enjoy it. Actually the CGI is better in Scooby Doo.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
One of the worse horror movies ever to grace the screen
Rob Zombie's efforts as a writer and director indicate exactly one thing, he's a horror fanboy who should stick to making music. This movie makes little sense, relies on effects to gloss over sub standard plot lines and character development, and fails in it's attempt to capture the 1970s horror movie. As a long time horror fan l am ashamed that my genre can produce such shlock. Karen Black what were you thinking!
If you enjoy driving slowly passed car crashes then catch this movie, if you enjoy horror movies then wait for Romero's fourth dead movie. 0 stars out of 5, Zombie has managed to set the horror genre back with a sub standard, boring, ill conceived outing. Once again we have a director trying to emulate Tobe Hooper's TCM and completely failing.
