Chennai Express (2013)
Chennai Express ABROAD- pure fun
The movie Chennai Express was shown in our country (Switzerland) only in very few cinemas. Here, nobody really knows the difference between Hindi and Tamil. What then makes this movie so special (if one doesn't get this difference)?
1. The movie is completely hilarious/funny/entertaining and not too subtle in message and intelligence
2. It is a romantic movie without being too cheesy or over-the-top
3. The performances are beautiful, especially the ones of the main actors: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
4. The songs are simple, earthy, wonderfully poetic AND catchy
10/10 for being pure fun
Paheli (2005)
Epic excellency
This movie takes one completely at surprise. It is an unusual film about love, a love which conquers any obstacles. After watching this movie, superlatives are a must.
This movie is elevated, colorful excellency! The story is well written and executed. The acting is unbelievably good (especially SRK's and Rani's). The music is beautiful and the lyrics very poetic. The most striking thing about this movie is the cinematography and art design: absolutely brilliant! The way the camera captures the scenes, seems almost as if the director himself was in love with the characters and the love story.
Complete 10/10
Windtalkers (2002)
Combat and Adam Beach
At first, I was terribly disappointed by that movie. It should have been about Navajo Code Talkers. Well it isn't. There are only two characters that are supposed to be Navajo, they have a few scenes, the rest is all about Nicolas Cage. His acting style in this movie can only be called careless and superficial. Why then is the movie worth 7 points? There are three reasons:
1. The combat scenes are amazing!
2. The Native Americans are surprisingly good actors: Adam Beach completely upstaged Cage!
And thirdly, the settings are beautiful and carefully chosen to great cinematic effect (Canyon, Hawaii, pond in the jungle, etc.)
Smoke Signals (1998)
A Gem of a Movie
It is a road movie, a comedy, and Indian film all in one. Surprising were the great performances of the actors, especially Adam Beach. Although characterized as an Indian Film, it is universal in theme, execution and message. The story is well developed, with an interesting twist at the end. Also, it is one of the funniest films ever. Through humor it challenges the way people view Native Americans, in real life and on screen. As an important feature of the movie, worthy to be mentioned, is the cool soundtrack. Sherman Alexie himself, wrote some of the song lyrics (!). It is a gem of a movie and recommended for everyone, who wants to have culture mixed with entertainment and pure art. A 10/10
No More Smoke Signals (2008)
Great Documentary, Disappointing Consequences
The documentary is about the Kili Radio Station in Porcupine, in The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (SD). Several important Native Americans (and Whites), that have influenced Lakota culture over the years, are given a voice. Kili brings the Lakota and other Native Americans closer together: Kili brings people together for a Native X-Factor, it records local sports games of the young Lakota and brings information to people who really need it. On further point, the movie focuses on political issues that concern the Lakota nowadays.
It is a great documentary, but rather disappointing are the consequences: Although winning an award for best movie at ceremonies, the Lakota NEVER saw any of the money made by the movie. It seems that nobody cared about, what it actually tried to represent. Also, it wasn't really shown outside Europe (that is to say, Switzerland).
Biased, then I couldn't give a perfect 10/10.
Fantaghirò: Fantaghirò (1991)
Quiet excellence
From a technical point of view, it is not one of the greatest movies. It is a movie for nostalgic fable lovers. The actors are great, especially Alessandra Martines (just check out the last scene).
And of course Romualdo, played by Kim Rossi Stuart has been every girl's fantasy for the last two decades. (!) Interesting, too, is that the actors are all from different countries. I would give the movie a 10/10 for the story/idea, 10/10 for the characters/development, 10/10 the actors, 10/10 for the scenery, 9/10 to director Lamberto Bava (it would be too much to say , that he's perfect too, just because I like his movies), 7/10 technology (it's the 90ies/small budget).
The Pianist (2002)
Amazing movie
I believe this movie to be one of the most excellent movies of our times. It has several aspects that make it especially great. Firstly, the music, the most important feature of this movie, in my opinion. Chopin nocturnes and polonaises are perfectly chosen and arrayed to create an unforgettable atmosphere. In one scene, they even take time to play the whole piece of music, without interfering. Secondly, the actors in the movie: none of them are/were really well known, but WOW! (for lack of a better word). Thirdly, it's one of the few movies, where you can actually watch the credits (forever) and wish the movie wouldn't end.
Personally, I think it's a perfect 10/10.
