Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
FAITHFUL TO THE BOOKS, FUNNY AND FAST PACED
This is what happens when you involve the creator of the books in making of a show. The show is updated, funny, fast paced and emotional. I love what they did with Gabe, to highlight Sally's character. The minotaur scene is exceptional, I love the locations and the dialogues. Walker is so funny and on point as Percy. His chemistry with his costars are on the roof. You will really root for hin as the lead. I love how they're also fleshing out Grover and his dynamics with Percy. I want to say, Percy and Annabeth's chemistry is so good. Leah Jeffries nails her every line delivery. The music, Bear Mcreary is a genius, I love the main theme and the score. Can't wait for the next episodes.
Mayfair Witches (2023)
SLOW BUT A PROMISING START
An avid fan of TWD and I've decided to give this a try since I don't have anything on my plate now. I have read mostly negative reviews for this series but I always want to see the pilot first of every series that I watch for me to judge it myself.
Things that I like:
1. The atmosphere is super eerie, the bluish tint for the present scenes and the yellowish for the older scenes made the show creepier and more intense.
2. The sequence of how the story played out is quite unique, though the first scene spoiled the reveal on the end, but I'm overall happy as to how it all played out since I guess that's how the writers wants us to grasp the story.
3. The house has a character of it's own, the gothic vibe adds flavor to the story. I have watched the adaptation of Shirley Jackson's "We have always lived in the castle" and it has the same vibe that immerses you into the story.
4. The preview is promising, made you feel excited for more.
Things to improve:
1. I think the actors are yet to adjust to their role. I've felt the awkwardness on the first act, the hand gestures are off, the delivery, and facial expression of the lead is blank. But as the episode progressed, Alexandra Daddario is getting more comfortable with the character and her scenes with Dr. Lemle and her mom were spot on. The actor for young Diedre delivered enough but not that great. I can't say anything yet with the supporting cast, but Beth Grant and Erica Gimpel are the MVP of the 1st episode.
2. For a pilot episode, the show is too slow. Though I kind of feel that the slow burn is needed for the story to be more rewarding. I really hope that we could get more actions and plot twists in the coming episodes.
3. I suppose Lasher's is intended to be sexy and creepy as well, but I don't feel that yet in the pilot. The voice of Jack Houston is super deep and creepy though, I'll give him that but I'm quite disappointed with the wardrobe choice.
Overall, Mayfair Witches has a shaky but promising start with tolerable acting and a mystery that makes you excited for more.
