Vampire Academy (2014)
So much wasted potential
First and Foremost, major spoilers ahead. You have been warned. "Too long, didn't read" version at the bottom.
Vampire Academy is a movie based on the book series of the same name written by Richelle Mead. This isn't really the kind of movie you come into without reading the books. If anything, this movie appeals more to the fanbase than it does the general audience at which it was supposedly targeting. The script was great, for the most part it followed the book but it was still extremely weak. Mostly on part of the actors. Rose Hathaway is a dhampir who comes across as a selfish, spoiled brat with a tough exterior. She has a special bond with her best friend, Vasilissa Dragomir, the last of the Dragomir line.
Vasilissa Dragomir, on the other hand, is a Moroi. The Moroi are vampires, but not quite the vampires everyone knows and loves. That would be the Strigoi, the soulless undead. A Moroi can only become Strigoi by draining a human of all their blood or by drinking the blood of a Strigoi. Strigoi are extremely strong, fast and dangerous. Unlike the weak Moroi who rely solely on their Dhampir guardians. Amongst the Moroi are 12 Royal families. One of which is the Dragomir family who, with the exception of Vasilissa, were all killed in a car crash. The Dhampir are of mixed blood. They come from the union of a Moroi and Human. Due to this, Dhampirs are considerably shorter than their Moroi counterparts but are stronger physically and have better endurance. The Dhampirs job is to guard the Moroi. The Moroi come first. The Dhampir are trained to become Guardians. However, due to certain circumstances, Rose Hathaway and Lissa escape the school they are attending which is known as St. Vladimirs.
Now with all this potential, the movie could have been a lot better. However, the main two actors were very poor at portraying their characters accurately. Zoey Deutch's portrayal of Rose was very poor. So much so that she just ripped off Ellen page's character, Juno. Rose is supposed to be outwardly defiant, rebellious, tomboyish, flirtatious and protective of Vasilissa. However, in the movie, she is portrayed as being more like Juno. Lucy Fry's portrayal of Vasilissa was that of an outwardly weak, meek and timid girl who cannot do anything on her own. Whilst there were moments where she showed some Charisma, her overall portrayal was extremely weak. Dominic Sherwood accurately portrayed Christian Ozera and managed to leave a good impression. As someone who has read the books, it's easy to tell which actor/actress has studied up on their character and which one hasn't. Dominic Sherwood completely threw himself into his character which is impressive considering that this movie was supposed to be closer to that twilight/warm bodies junk because that's what seems to be a hit in the box office. However, that doesn't fit with the storyline that the books promote. The books promote that Vasilissa's Life is in constant danger and that the only thing actually protecting her is the bond she has with Rose. The movie, on the other hand, promotes two girls looking for fun and romance. Most of the potential for this movie was wasted on turning it into another snooze-fest like Twilight and Warm Bodies. Yes, Twilight has vampires and humans. Warm Bodies, on the other hand, has zombies. Whilst both have "supernatural beings", they are not the same. Nor should they ever be portrayed as such. The Movie had a couple of funny moments but that didn't necessarily redeem it.
If anything, it was obvious that the side actors were the only ones who had accurately portrayed their characters. Danila Kozlovsky accurately portrayed Dimitri as the "God" he is praised as. Gabriel Byrne portrayed Victor Dashkov in such an accurate way that he became the character. There is a huge difference between accurately portraying a character and becoming the character themselves. Had I not read the books, I would never have known that Victor was the villain.
Too Long Didn't Read,
The books focus mostly on Vasilissa's life being in constant danger and Rose's journey to becoming a guardian and dealing with her feelings for her mentor Dimitri as she hones her skills. Rose is hasty and eager while Vasilissa is patient and charismatic. The movie takes the storyline that is supposed to be dark and edgy and turns it into some twilight meets warm bodies crap. In short, go with the books. The Movie mostly appeals to the Twilight/Warm Bodies fanbases.
Frozen (2013)
Wonderful Animation, Terrible Storyline
Okay, let's start off with the animation. Frozen is set in Scandinavia, it's beautiful and just breathtaking. The animation was wonderful and so beautiful. But Frozen's biggest downfall comes in the storyline. It's hard to say what the plot is about because this is one of those films that changes the plot as it sees fit.
The biggest issue is that Anna, the ditzy younger selfish sister is given a love interest in someone who really isn't anything like her. Anna has always had what she wanted, whereas Elsa was locked away in a room because of her powers and one accident where Anna pushed despite Elsa's refusal. Elsa became fearful of her own emotions. Fearing to let anyone close. Until she breaks out of her shell. At which point we feel the story may be changing for the better. But, nope. This movie starts out about Elsa the Ice Queen, but really, it's all about how "True Love Conquers All.". Anna is the main character of this film, not Elsa. Despite the Movie trying to make it about Elsa, it is ultimately all about Anna's Selfishness. This is what makes the movie terrible. There was so much potential, yet that potential just went to waste.
In short, it's a decent movie but it's not what you'd expect. It ends up being mostly disappointing by the end.
Sekirei (2008)
To Love-Ru meets Ikki Tousen..Sort of.
Now, after watching both seasons of Sekirei, the one thing I can say is that this is, in a way, your standard Harem Anime. Lots of Ecchi scenes, lots of big breasted women and lots of Nudity. But this in no way means that the plot is weak.
Minato Sahashi is our physically weak and confident-lacking protagonist. By no means is he one of those characters with some hidden power. He's just an average human being with nothing that makes him special, per se. He's intelligent but lacks confidence in himself and does not deal well under pressure, which is why he has failed the University Entrance Exams two years running now. One day after making his way home from the University, he suddenly encounters Musubi, Sekirei #88. Dropping in on him from the Sky. He protects her from her pursuers, twin Sekirei, who attack all Sekirei that have yet to Emerge. The pact between a Sekirei and their Ashikabi is made through a kiss.
Sekirei are mystical beings who were found by two people on an island that had mysteriously emerged from the Sea. They were found by Minaka Hiroto and a lady named Takami. There are 108 Sekirei, the single digit Sekirei being significantly stronger than the double-digit and triple-digit Sekirei. Minaka Hiroto has set up a game which most Ashikabi are dragged into unwillingly. According to him, the self-proclaimed Game Master, Sekirei exist only to fight and kill each other. So he decides to hold what is known as The Sekirei plan. In this deadly game of life or death, there are several stages and each Sekirei must compete to survive and find their chosen Ashikabi.
Warm Bodies (2013)
Terrible movie
I have watched so many horror films about Zombies, ranging from 28 Days Later to Dawn of the Dead. Each one successfully makes out Zombies to be what we know them as - Brain Dead creatures with no humanity and extremely contagious bites. They shuffle around for the most part, just doing nothing. They don't sleep. They just eat the living. But this movie is different. Warm Bodies takes almost everything you know about Zombies and throws it out the window. No Mindless zombies. R is a Zombie who eats brains to feel something, anything really. Yet for some unknown reason, he has this strange urge to protect a human girl, shortly after he starts devouring her boyfriend's brains that is.
To say that this movie is worth watching is giving it too much credit. This is supposed to be a Romantic Comedy, but it's just not funny. It takes a whole hour for there to be any real comedy. The most horrible part of this movie is that there is no explanation for any of it. They're supposed to be dead. Not alive. Yet through means unknown, they can fall in love. They can think. They can speak English. They can drive cars for goodness sake! But seriously, R is a Zombie who somehow goes from eating brains to protecting a human girl to falling in love with her to getting a heart beat to becoming warmer to dreaming to making out with her to being cured. This is a movie that will leave you baffled. If you're a fan of Romance, then by all means watch this movie. If you've watched a lot of Zombie movies, don't watch this.
