The Challenger Disaster (2019)
Terrible movie with interesting story.
Simply put this is one of the worst movies I've seen in long time. I watched it through because the subject matter is of huge interest to me. It's a shame that as a movie every element is bad. But I did learn from it. The basic story needs to be told, but it would be nice if it were also a watchable film.
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
Truly AMAZING use of 3D and digital colorization...and perfect in every other way.
This is simple one of, if not the best documentary I have ever seen, and I see a fair amount of them. Peter Jackson took this clear labor of love and respect and a genuine desire to show today's audience just what it might have been like to live through the trenches of "The Great War"
I watched this in 3D not because I wanted to, but because it was the only showing available that I could fit into my schedule. I was worried it would take away from the experience or cheapen it somehow. It was amazing! The realism brought to the screen with that extra dimension heightened the reality of it from what a 2D version might have been. Specifically the close-ups of the wounds on people and animals was so gruesome, you could see the individual layers of flesh to bone. You would see angle from just above the trenches looking down and feel the depth of the situations. You could almost feel and touch the ground shaking from the firing of the heavy artillery. From purely a technical standpoint this movie is incredible.
Then we have to talk about the direction and editing of this film. Taking 600 hours of audio sources, interviews and the like. Over 100 hours of archived film, pouring over that and writing script solely from audio content already acquired. No voice over narrator, the narrative was directly from the survivors of WW1. It laid out every aspect of what it was like to join the infantry to surviving or dying as infantry on to coming home from such a horrific ordeal.
This is a MUST SEE movie for anyone wanting to know about WW1. This has no political agenda, it's just pure documentary that beyond anything I think has ever been done about a war. Jackson better take home an Oscar for this!
