Alien Origin (2012)
Alien found footage.
I am beyond astonished at the low ratings this movie has gotten. I'd give it an easy 7.5! Either I'm an outlier or they are. Maybe I'm too easily entertained?
I was surprised by how good the movie was! I like Asylum movies. Don't get me wrong. I can see the difference between them and high quality movies. As a kid however I saw a LOT of low quality programming and enjoyed it.
Some reviewers have called this a rip off of "Prometheus." I don't know. I've only seen bits and pieces of "Prometheus" at best.
Some have claimed the movie was slow paced. I didn't see that. I was pretty close to riveted!
Some reviewers claimed the acting was bad. I didn't see that. When watching movies there's a certain amount of "suspension of reality" that must take place. Especially with a sci-fi / mystery. With that in mind I don't see a reason for complaints about dialogue, acting or directing. With that suspension of reality in mind the movie is quite believable to me. The found footage aspect of the movie should relieve many of the complaints of that sort.
Do you like B movies? If you do I think you should like this. Good luck!
They Came from the Ether (2014)
Loving, low budget tribute to the 1950's.
My first thought when this movie ended was "Well that was an unusual movie!"
The movie is both a send up of, and a tribute to the kind of 1950's Sci-Fi movies that I loved watching as a kid. It made me want to find a good movie of this type and watch it. I think the makers of the movie also had a soft spot for those great old films.
Some of the actors were better than others. Some may have been less than great on purpose. Some may not even have been actors.
First of all I should say that Judith O'Dea seemed to do the best acting job in the movie but hers was a different sort of role than the rest.
I think Garland Gunn/Christopher Fisher, who played the lead character, John Henry, did a good job satirizing the kind of over serious portrayal that was usually seen in these kind of movies. I hope his career does well.
I enjoyed Rocio Cortez/Thrasher's portrayal of the usual good girl heroine part usually seen in 50's Sci-Fi. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like she's done much other work.
Along with Ms. Cortez/Thrasher I enjoyed Paul Gibson as Detective Washburn. He kept reminding me of "millionaire Bruce Wayne" I'd like to see him get cast in some quality movies. I enjoyed the comic seriousness of his and Ms. Cortez/Thrasher scenes together.
Finally, Brad Eugene Greer captured the arrogant dismissiveness of the "superior" aliens often seen in the 1950's. His portrayal also added to my enjoyment of the movie.
These actors did a great job working with what seemed like a pretty low budget.
Fortress of the Dead (1965)
I liked the movie.
An interesting movie about a WW II vet who survived Corregidor and suffers PTSD because of it. Thirty seven of his fellow soldiers died there. He blames himself.
Twenty years after the war he revisits Corregidor at the urging of a friend to try and overcome the nightmares he's been suffering from and the nightmare his life has become ever since.
At first it seems as if his friend's suggestion may be helping him. Later, he's not so sure.
This movie is a bit like an extended Twilight Zone episode and is similar to later TV shows and movies of the seventies that have a psychological twist.
None of the actors were known to me but they did a good enough job.
Sherlock Holmes und das Halsband des Todes (1962)
Sherlock Holmes y el Collar Mortal.
If you're a fan of the "Sherlock Holmes stories you'll enjoy this one.
The work itself isn't great but to me it's always a treat to see something new (to me) related to Holmes.
Christopher Lee himself is the best part of the movie, Followed by Senta Berger. She's always a pleasure to see.
Hans Sohnker, as Professor Moriarity was enjoyable but under used. A battle of wits between perhaps the two greatest minds of the time would've been very interesting to me.
Unfortunately the movie is dubbed. Somehow the voice actors are never able to convey the emotions portrayed by the physical actors. I recognize the voice of the actor dubbing for Christopher Lee. I don't know his name off hand but he seems to have been quite prolific.
Watch the show if you enjoy Sherlock Holmes.
Land the Landing Force (1967)
Land 'em!
This film was interesting enough and well done. It shows us a slice of life in the nineteen sixties. It is in all likelihood just a film made to interest young people in joining the military and to encourage their parents to allow them to, but it can be enjoyed as a look at a certain aspect of the sixties and of mid twentieth century American life in general. There's a certain amount of nostalgia felt when watching this clip and that's primarily what I got out of it. Some people may still be inspired to join the military by this clip or just to go out and get a good workout. Some may be inspired to make military movies. Watch it for yourself and see what you think.
The Final Level: Escaping Rancala (2019)
Boss Fight!
This is a movie by Asylum. Not known for producing Oscar winners. However I do think they make some movies that are thoroughly watchable and entertaining. The Final Level: Escaping Rancala is one of those movies. I thought the plot was intriguing. Most of the movie takes place inside a video game. The three main stars are attractive women which never hurts either. After I watched the movie (it's quite obviously CGI) I found myself being somewhat amazed at how dinosaurs or other creatures that obviously aren't real have improved since I was young. The acting is acceptable and we see Bai Ling for a short time. I'd watch it again some time for the entertainment value.
Shadows on the Wall (2015)
A captivating, enjoyable movie.
I just watched this movie, Despite what I would say was a low budget and largely unknown actors in this film, words and phrases that come to mind to describe this story are as follows; interesting, compelling, captivating, absorbing et al.
I find this to be an excellent piece of work. A movie that relies on the script to keep us interested. Not on effects. Not on celebrity actors.
Like all "sci-fi" movies you do have to allow yourself to believe that the story is possible but I don't think lovers of sci-fi and fantasy will have a problem with that.
I hope the people involved with this movie are able to make a bit of money off of it. They deserve it.
The Dungeon of Harrow (1962)
The Dungeon of Harrow
I thought I was being generous by giving this movie a three. But as of this writing the movie is rated 3.4.
The story is actually good but the acting is really bad. Interestingly the narration isn't as bad as the acting. And there is quite a bit of narration.
It seems like the author was trying to write something like a 1930's pulp story.
The story, as I said isn't half bad.
This is a woefully low budget movie. Bad actors. Bad make up. Bad special affects. The setting is sometimes reasonable.
It does have two pretty girls that make the movie easier to watch.
Over all I was entertained but you'll really have to enjoy bad movies to watch it.
Deadly Skies (2006)
Force of Impact
This is a B movie. I like B movies. My review will reflect that attitude.
I've read that this movie has been released with both gay scenes and without them. The version I saw had no gay scenes so I can't comment on them.
I enjoyed the movie. The actors were mostly believable.
It contains the usual handsome, brave, smart leading man and an appealing female costar. Although I think Rae Dawn Chong should have been younger but you work with what you're given. Most of the supporting actors do a fine job. Especially the General, Michael Moriarty.
I give this movie an enthusiastic thumbs up and I recommend it to all fans of the B movie genre.
Raptor Island (2004)
Raptors
This is a B movie. Which brings with it certain connotations. It also has elements of sci-fi or fantasy. You must allow yourself to believe certain elements of the plot to be entertained. I have no problem with that.
I enjoyed this movie. I'm a fan of B movies. I happened to be reminded of Lorenzo Lamas and went looking for some shows with him in them. I found several and this is the first one I've watched.
I gave this a solid 7 rating. I might have given it a higher rating but most people don't agree with high ratings for these kind of movies and I'm hoping this review will be seen and not disregarded.
Enjoy.
Alligator X (2010)
Animal X
This is a fairly low budget movie. Knowing that, you need to be a little lenient in your judgement of it. When watching a movie with a subject like this you also have to allow yourself to believe in the subject matter. It's real whether or not you think this could happen.
I enjoyed the movie. Only 1 actor was known to me but I enjoyed all the main characters performances.
The movie is suspenseful and has you jumping a few times. I cared about the 2 main characters. The sheriff and his ex girlfriend. I thought that the 3rd main character was also intriguing and well acted. In truth all but the most peripheral actors did at least a good enough job.
The scenery was excellent for the subject matter.
I enjoyed the movie and would probably watch it again when I've forgotten enough of it. Give it a try.
Red Island (2018)
Red Island
I liked this movie. I found it suspenseful, intriguing and mysterious.
It's not a perfect movie but I gave it an 8 out of 10. The 2 main actor's were quite good in my opinion. The actors were heretofore unknown to me and were a pleasant surprise.
It is, in my opinion, well written and well thought out.
When reading this review you'll have to take into account that other reviews here give completely opposite opinions. I don't know what they were watching. It's like we saw 2 different films. Perhaps we come from different generations and therefore see things differently.
If you like suspense, intrigue and a slow build up then I believe you'll like this movie.
End of the World (2018)
Surprisingly good!
I found this movie to be surprisingly good. Granted I like B and even Z grade movies but this was a pleasant surprise. The weakest part of this movie was the special effects and I can't complain about that since I was practically raised on 1950's Sci - Fi. Give the movie a try.
Stasis (2017)
An enjoyable B movie.
I enjoyed this movie. It's low budget and the acting isn't always the best but I found it entertaining. I was also introduced to some new to me actors. I recommend this film.
