Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Emperor Snyder has no clothes
When will the faithful realise that Snyder is not the saviour of cinema? His DCEU films were poor (yes, even his version Justice League) and this is a threadbare quilt of other people's stories that he has tried to fold into a single story. The results are visually engaging (if repetitive) but the narrative is thin and the script crumbles under the weight of the exposition. Honestly, the script is horrible and unintentionally hilarious on more than one occasion The die-hard Syner-philes will no doubt herald this as a masterpiece... but it isn't and someone really needs to tell them that the Emperor has no clothes.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Unconventional & Creative
If you want a film that holds your hands and guides you through the story the EEAAO is not the film for you. If you want to be spoon-fed explanations for what is going on then EEAAO is not the film for you. If you struggle with assembling a IKEA cabinet, the EEAAO is certainly not for you. On the other hand, if you like daring, imaginative an original story-telling, the EEAAO is absolutely worth checking out.
The cast are fantastic and the concepts are very well explained. The effects are insane given the size of the budget of the film. The editing is top notch and it is laugh out loud funny too.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Ignore the haters!
This show is really heartwarming and genuinely lovely. It is geared to a younger audience but that doesn't make it bad. The performances are rounded and the dynamics and relationship between the characters is what sits at the heart of the show. Ignore the haters (and question their motives for the poor reviews), this show will put a smile on your face.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Do try to keep up!
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a crazy crazy ride, but I don't think it could have been any other way. Fans will love it, casual Marvel viewers will be asking questions and franchise newbies will be totally lost!
Eternals (2021)
Eternals: Big Picture Thinking
First thing first; this is NOT the worst MCU movie, not even close. There is a LOT to love about this movie; it looks amazing, balances a lot of characters well and is certainly the most epic film in terms of scale. It is not your typical MCU film but that's no bad thing. There a lot of weighty dialogue and some topics are quite earnest and philosophical, but I prefer that over the vacuous content of many other films. And, as origin stories go, at least this one tried to do something a little different, merging material from the comics, with some original ideas and content.
There are flaws however. The action sequences aren't always as impactful as they could be and some of visual effects feel a little rushed. The scope of the story won't appeal to everyone and the ending may leave a lot of viewers scratching their heads.
People have been drawing comparisons with Dune, saying that DV's film shows how to make sweeping large-scale with complex characters and gravitas. Dune is a technically superior film to the Eternals, but here's the thing; I appreciated the craft and diligence of Dune, but I enjoyed Eternals more. Dune is intellectual but quite cold, whereas Eternals has a lot more heart.
What If...?: What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark? (2021)
Weakest episode yet
Nice set-up, but no follow through. It is one thing to leave the audience wanting more but this just lazy storytelling. This is twice they have done this now and I hope they don't stop with the half-stories from here on in.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: One World, One People (2021)
One step forward, two steps back
Somewhere in TFATWS there is a pretty decent story trying to get out. Unfortunately it is beaten down by sub-standard plotting and some seriously poor character development. For every high (and there are some) there are some pretty stupid lapses of logic. This final episode is a total mess and the big reveals flop like fish on a river bank. WandaVision was fun and interesting, TFATWS is sloppy and poorly plotted. Some of the directorial choices are also very questionable. This is a real shame because the are some interesting themes being discussed here.
