Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
The Xer's and boomers are at it again....
"oh nooo they spoiled a show I liked when I was a kid" as for any sipnoff, reboot or sequel of anything from around the 80's: Thunddercats, Ghost busters, Star Wars and so on the Xers and boomers are crying about how it is an insult to the original material. No it's not, it just doesn't make you feel like it did when you were five. And you're not five anymore.
And stop speaking for the death all right? Who knows what Rodenberry would have thought of this. But for the time he was alive, there always was some silliness in ST, a light side.
And the jokes and the humour is fun, at least it is derived ffrom the plot, not like the humor of Mcfarlane. However to his credit there was probably some inspiration in ST Lower Decks in the based on The Orville, just the idea of a silly Star Trek. There was also probably some inspiration in Final Space, I personnally didn't like Final Space, I don't think they manage to find the right spot between random jokes and absurd jokes.
Anyway I'm having a lot of fun watching STLD, with all the references.
As with all the latest ST shows I find it incredible that so many people are just whining about how it's not Next Gen. Like seriously? Can you imagine having a Sci-fi show like Discovery, Picard in 1990? You would have been on your ass. We are very lucky to live in an era that can produce such high quality sci-fi, visually and story wise. But no the only thing you can think about is how it doesn't make you feel like when you were five. And in that regard a lot of you sound exactly like if you were five.
Away (2020)
It fails at Sci-fi and fails as character driven story.
This is a very disapointing serie. Hard Sci-fi is usually used to explore character driven stories. But in this case the catalyst doesn't serve the development of character. The probems that the characters go through could've happen in any other circumstances. The fact that they are in space is just a plot device in this case to develop poorly a bunch of character. And this could be ok if the character were well written but we f e e l the writing behind the character and we fail to attach emotionally to their stories that are a bunch of clichés. Neither the characters or the plot seem to drive each other further.
And I'm all for representation, and this show check all the boxes, or almost. But it feels forced to try to put in some conflict into the characters. It does not feel that this diversity is naturally ocuring. And I honnestly wouldn't mind if the diversity wasn't at the same time a bunch of ethnic clichés: the angry Russian, the strict Asians. The actor with trisomy is clearly very high functionning. If you're gonna write a show and make statements about diversity why not go all the way instead of playing it safe with things that were done a long time ago, and better. Why have a trans women as captain (or maybe that's the big reveal? going full circle back to Boys Don't Cry?) and have heavily disabled person. Why not have the main characters all be black? And I'm fine with representation just for the sake of representation, but it feels forced to induce pseudo dramatic arc that aren't challenging our views in any way. Having a gay couple is not pushing our views, which is why hard sci-fi should maybe do. If you're gonna use forced diversity as cheap plot or character device at least make it interesting. And the fact that it feels forced and that they just checked some diversity boxes breaks our suspension of disbelief.
None of the things that could be qualities drive anything foward. It is a bad use of hard sci-fi, a bad character centered plot, a bad use of diversity that isn't suttle enough to just be accidental. Like they could've just have this much diversity, just because the best actors were the one they chose but since they decided to make plot devices out of this diversity it is not challenging enough to make us think or be challenging.
So with all this the drama just becomes annoying, and the sci-fi becomes meaningless. So all in all it is just a bad use of bad use of every kind of tools they had.
Like in the end what's the story? We don't care about the charachter's drama and the sci-fi isn't interesting enough, so what is this show about?
Love Life (2020)
Character and overall story is pretty stereotypical
Overall an ok romcom serie, however I find that the men and women are a bit stereotypical. One thing that anoy me the most I think is that every title of each episode is named after the men in her life. I get that this is the concept of the serie but too often I find that women are not the subject of their own story and they tend to define who they are based on who they are with. I might be nitpicking, If I recall correctly the movie High Fidelity has basically the exact same premise. But it was 20 years ago, I just find that today women should be the subject of their stories and not define who they are based on their relations with other men. Since every title of each episode is named after a man it gives the impression that the core of her story is not her but that she's been defined by the man she was with. All and all a small detail but somewhat important also.
It's still a fun watch to relax. The characters aren't super original, neither is the premise or anything, but it's like good junk food.
ThunderCats Roar (2020)
This show is not for people from 30 to 60....
Come on people. I didn't know Thundercats when I was a kid and I went in not expecting anything, and it's a pretty fun cartoon on its own. I'm sure kids are having a blast watching this. its pretty silly humor. I like it. It's way waaaaayy better than a ton of cartoons out there. It only got bad ratings in the stats from biter Xers who were expecting a grown up version of what they liked as kids. If you're feeling nostalgic then just watch the old Thundercats. But I'm sure you're only gonna watch 2-3 episodes, cause those old cartoons were bad and boring. The new one I can watch and have a good time indefinitely.
From Inside (2008)
The point
Yes the paste is slow, yes everybody dies and that's what I liked about it. Someone asked what was the point of the movie since everyone dies in it, the train, the baby are probably metaphores for something but I'll let everyone make it's own interpretation. To me thought I watch this kind of movies like I listen to music. This is a dark, ambiant probably nihilistic movie and honnestly if it had a happy ending I would have been really disappointed. I did not asked my self what was the point of it at the end. The point was the mood I was in for an hour or so exactly like when I listen to music or when I watch a painting. Even thought it is not an abstract movie it is not a "story" movie either even if there is a narrative track. Anyhow everybody dies in the Departed it doesn't mean that there's no point to the movie they just have really different stories and paste.
If you enjoy dark, ambiant, sad, nihilistic works you will enjoy this. If you ask yourself what's the point of this you better stick to blockbusters until your a little older than 16.
