How Do You Know (2010)
Realistic, Charming, and Honest
If you're looking for a pick me up, this is it. Its not a rom com, but it has romantic and comedic charm to it. It really is just a story, a story that just about anyone can find themselves relating to. That being said, I don't think I've seen a character written quite like Reese's portrayal of Lisa. A character who isn't obsessed on one certain goal in her life (ie finding the "one", getting a certain guy's attention, etc). Instead she just goes through life, working through her problems and dealing with them in an honest way. Even when she bumps in to George (paul rudd) she doesn't upheave everything about herself, instead she continues about her life's mess and works with what is given to her. I personally found her thought process, decision making, perspective, and overall character to be refreshingly relatable. Of course, I can't resist the charm and loveliness of Paul Rudd, and playing George Madison is just another role he excels at playing for this movie.
The rest of the movie I'll save for those who watch it, but just know if you're looking for a feel good movie with some laughs, romantic charm, and a good following of characters while feeling like a fly on the wall to their situation, How Do You Know is a great movie for just that. The writing could be a little sharper, sure. But if you're irritated by the forced emotion in writings of today's movies like I am, this movie will not bother you. Don't let the overall low IMDB rating number fool you.
The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974)
A childhood favorite
The Christmas season just isn't the same without watching this. This stands out more to me than any other Rankin/Bass holiday special (Rudolph, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, etc). Overall I think that this movie is perfect for any age. For younger ones and the kid in all of us, it's about hoping that Santa will decide to come around on Christmas. But as I and other viewers grow, it's about not taking life too seriously and to let the kid in you shine. I think that that message alone is crucial to enjoying the holidays. I know that for some, the plot pieces without the unforgettable Miser brothers are boring, but as someone who can recite this movie word for word, the plot flies by for me.
