Spy (2015)
"Spy" Does It's Job
The genre says Action, Comedy, Crime. It pulled out all of those things. It was a solid film. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a "Spy 2" later down the road. All the characters did well. Jason Statham was the funniest character. Always good to see actors that can ease into a other genres. We all know how comedies are introduced nowadays. The good ones are always rated R, there is always nudity, etc. The only frequent thing in this film was the cursing which audiences will get over or find funny. Rose Byrne did a wonderful job as well playing her role as well. Overall the film does what it was suppose to do. Get laughter with action.
The Royals (2015)
The Pilot Was Free
By the title of the summary you can guess I am pretty disappointed so far with the show. I just watched the "Pilot" episode and I just have one question to sum everything up. What kind of resume do you need in order for a network to go with your idea for a show? Apparently not a decent one. Mark Schwan's is probably a nice guy in person but the writing of this show is just so...everywhere. This show had all the makings of a hit. First original scripted show for a network that airs reality shows all the time, a strong female lead in Elizabeth Hurley (if you want to even call it a lead role because she is barely in the pilot). You could practically see the success coming out of the screen. After a couple seasons maybe a Golden Globe or too for a network that doesn't really do award shows like that. But none of that is going to happen with this show unless they get more writers or fire the ones they have now. It is just amazing to me how people all over the world, including myself, aspire to write, create and direct their own television shows and films but have to do so much to get our foot in the door and then when we see the product that was put in front of us from other writers who, from what I've seen barely done anything, it is a bunch of mess. The other woman that was credited for writing an episode, I wonder which one she wrote? I'm going to watch the second episode only because it's $1.99 if that tells you anything.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
The Dark One In The Bunch
Every franchise has that one film that has a very dark, somber tone to it and that's exactly what "Mockingjay: Part 1" became. I personally only had one issue with the film that isn't a huge deal. I thought the film should have been two hours and an extra forty-five minutes. It just seemed like one of those films. As the franchise gets closer to the end I would think that each film would get longer to make sure everything that needs to be in the film is in it. But that didn't affect the rating that I gave it. Solid, good film. It went places that it didn't go in the first two a little which is always nice and fresh for franchises like this. Let's be honest here though. Critics and Metascore can give this whatever color grade or number they want, the film is still gonna bring in big revenue.
Gone Girl (2014)
Dave Fincher, Early Lead.
I'm not a well-known film critic but this is my first film that I have gave a ten out of ten rating. We all know that it's that time of the year again for production companies to start pumping out their best material for the Academy Award season. Some companies think their is a system to putting together a great film. Other companies actually take the time to put together a great film crew and good actors. This was one of those companies. Consider this film a headstart on David Fincher's race to an award for Best Director, or Best Picture either one is fine. Everything about this film is almost perfect to the directing, editing, acting, even the font for the credits.
Lucy (2014)
Almost There Lucy
We all know Luc Besson and his style of directing. Lucy had some action in but just not enough for me. It seemed like right when I got comfortable the movie was over. The movie is only 1hr and 28mins but that is plenty of time. Since the movie started out with the plot I thought, "Great, that means plenty of time for action", and I feel like it just wasn't enough. Just a tad more would've been fine. But the film is decent. Glad I used my free movie ticket for it though. The fact that it made way more than "Hercules" and that film cost over double of "Lucy" lets you know something. The rest of this review is just to have enough lines for it to go through.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Michael Bay Got Me This Time
The saying goes "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". I don't think it says anything about being fooled a third or fourth time. After being fooled more than two times something must be wrong. I only gave this film a 7 solely based on it's action, an there was a ton of action. The only thing this film might get an Oscar for is sound editing because my God at one point I thought the sound editors were just being funny with this super deep declining tone. It was still cool though. My problem is this film was expected. Who comes out of a Michael Bay film saying "Man that was beautifully written". He is an action guy if he just so happens to grab a good writer (which you would think he would) along for the ride it would be out of pure luck of the draw. It's okay, not great at all, the action is what makes the entire movie have what little bit of life it does have. It is watchable though unlike (in my opinion) "A Good Day To Die Hard". Could have been taking down some as far as how long it is, I mean 2hrs & 45mins. I love long films. I feel like with a long film you have been on this long journey with the characters. The story has been embedded into your mind and you think about it for awhile. I would let long films pass if it was Oscar season and popular franchises (which I guess this would count as one but we were fooled and it should never happen again!). To make a long review short. Great for kids 13 to 15 because their little teenage brains would jump for joy with all that 2hr and 45min action. Oh and Michael Bay this is the last time you fool me...again
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Leonardo Dicaprio is so underrated
I feel so sorry for Scorsese and DiCaprio. All the hard work and money that was put into this great film that was only nominated twice in the Golden Globes and as far as I saw rarely in the Academy Awards. I have seen (and own) just about every Oscar-nominated film of 2014 and I have to say "The Wolf of Wall Street" (which is a comedy) is a wonderful film and once again one of Scorsese's best work. I love that the film was basically 3 hours. It took me on a real adventure about the life of Jordan Belfort. "American Hustle" did not have enough comedy to become the best in a category with "The Wolf of Wall Street". Leonardo DiCaprio once again is snubbed of another Academy Award but he seems so humble and loves his work so much that he just wants to produce go material. All an all the film is perfect. This is my first film rating of 10 out of 10 which I never give.
Frozen (2013)
The First Modern Disney Classic
Is there such a thing as a modern classic? This film hit all the points in why Disney was created by the late great Walt Disney. It gives you all emotions. Nowadays Pixar tries too hard and misses sometimes on films they mostly do well because it's Disney but this brings it back to what it is suppose to be. It gives all the emotions of suspense, romance, comedy, thrilling and other. I don't think Pixar was apart of this film though. I never saw a short before it started or never saw the classic bouncing lamp. Maybe Disney will realize something here. Maybe Pixar focuses on modern stories when Walt Disney Studios focuses on the magical, fantasy part. Great family film.
Camp Takota (2014)
Big Step For YouTube, Rockstream & VHX (PG-13 borderline R rating)
This film does not have a rating for some reason. I would give it a PG-13 rating, going borderline R rating. I have followed these 3 talented women (Mamrie Hart, Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart) on YouTube for a while now and I have to say "Camp Takpta" is everything it was expected to be. This film is new, fresh and vibrant. A good length, roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. Got straight to the point. Definitely some funny moments, some serious moments, and romantic moments. Also definite room for a sequel if they make enough money. This is a classic regular-Saturday-sit- down-and-relax film. Wonderful job all around. Motivates all up and coming film directors. Would recommend this film to anyone in the 16+ age range. General good acting from the main cast. Hannah Hart definitely fit right in with her supporting role.
About Last Night (2014)
The Perfect Romantic Comedy
The perfect example of a romantic comedy film. Every role was created equal. The main characters were casted well and the creators weren't focused on big-time Hollywood A-Listers. These characters fed off of each other. Kevin Hart's role was made for him in this film. I actually found myself seriously laughing instead of forcible laughing. I found myself wanting to see the film twice in one day. I actually thought the film could've been PG-13 without a few words in them. Some parts were a little predictable but overall good film. Good writing as well. Even though it is rated R I recommend this for ages 17+. Kevin Hart is obviously bound to break box office records coming out with more films this year than possibly any comedian this year.
