Blue Thunder (1984)
A pre cgi pop culture goldmine!
one season?!?!?
I feel like i've been searching for this show since it aired, and no amount of Gipper era propaganda guilt can keep me from enjoying it. You see, this was back when studios would pay for actual helicopters and actual airplanes to preform ridiculously dangerous stunts for the enjoyment of the viewing public. And sure, is it cheesy, you bet, in the best 80's way possible, and sure, it's not deep or complicated or profound, thats what actual life is for. It's just an a$$kicking show about a superhelicopter and the cowboys who love her.
In terms of mst3k worthy 1984 pop culture... Dana Carvey(who would have thought Beatles impressions would go out of style?)!?!? Bubba Smith!?!?!? In Leather?!?!? and saying poetry like " sophistication is a state of mind."?!?! George Gaynes as the professor who created Blue Thunder!? A Twin Peaks Van Horne?!?!? Semi ancient current events plots involving revolutionary forces against Eva Peron?! Helicopter gun turret double entendres?! It's all here folks.
And you might say, this guy just has an action helicopter fetish, and you'd be right, but there is something redeeming in the simplicity of this show. Seven seasons may have been to much for the story arc, but i could do with another season.
Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (2012)
the twin peaks of comedy
I wanted to sign in tonight to give this movie 10 stars, then realized I already had. Pretty proud of myself. How could these guys get Chef Goldblum, the guy who was Ben Linus's boss on Lost, Ron Burgundy, Macgruber,Dewey Cox, The Snuggler, the amazingly psychotic Leland Palmer, the guy from The Room,Saul, & the coach from Necessary Roughness to be in the same movie? by being unbelievably funny.
Btw Steve Brule deserved an Oscar for this one. It's certainly rough, but ultimately it will be the last of it's time. it's one final, awkwardly offensive salvo against the coming of the New "Look how shish I am " interMedia & the 3 minute TV show.
Thanks for going there.
" you know, they probably forgot about the billion dollars."
Ghostbusters (2016)
My 4 cents
saw it twice, first on opening day due to a political theory I have about America's ability to accept Women in roles of power.( passiveconsumer. blogspot.com) I was very happy with the comedy and chemistry of it but was less than enthused about the effects. Went back to see it in 3D on the advice of a friend and was much happier with the effects, as well as the jokes I missed the first time. Will watch it again and look forward to the blooper reel.
Originally my only requirement for this movie was that it be better than my memory of Ghostbusters 2, which I have always harbored a grudge against. & it was. But then I watched #2 again and you know, pretty good! Such great chemistry between Murray & Weaver ( was she really Ripley?!) and the geekspeak and writing for Dan and Harold was executed like surgery.
then, I was finally able to find a copy of 1, (thanks Christine!) and frankly, my surprise at how much I liked #2 was equaled by my surprise at how much I was blushing during #1. #1 is not a kid friendly movie! Even though I watched it a million times growing up, and it has a pg rating, #1 is much more adult than any of its counterparts. Did a ghost just go Lovelace on Dan!? Did the gatekeeper and the keymaster just wake up from a one night stand?! That's how Zul returns!?! Wow.
After watching them all again, the newest might actually be my favorite.
Fire Birds (1990)
too cool for helicopter school.
what on earth is this movie!? good lord mankind, a little shame please!
two stars for being a helicopter based film, a personal favorite, and one more for falling decidedly into mst3k worthy awfulness.
one million stars deducted for having the budget and cast to make an awesome helicopter movie and making this.
unbelievably corny dialogue delivered with cringeworthy timing? Check. ridiculous plot? Check. reasonably excellent helicopter stunts? Check. a scarfed out "soul - rock"? band butchering chain of fools while our heroes strut their groove thangs? Triple check.
cop a chill.
Touch of Evil (1958)
holy cow is this a good movie!
thrills! chills! Welles!
if you feel like you've seen this movie a thousand times upon first viewing, it's probably because almost every moment has been "borrowed" by filmmakers for over half a century. And then copied by people who saw the borrowings.
journey to the dark heart of man? Check. Marlene smoking over a crystal ball? Check. Janet terrorized in a motel? Check. Orson at the pinnacle of his game? Check. a shining example of what defines the difference between a film and a "movie" check.
top ten list.
Jaws: The Revenge (1987)
what's not to love?
this is the character I most like to associate with Caine. Just a freewheeling pilot with a bit of the ol shaharazad. Forgiving the sometimes spotty cues and the somewhat silly premise,( although it could be said that the first jaws had a touch of fantasy to it, I mean we all know a giant shark couldn't hurt Robert Shaw.) I find myself watching this movie quite often. Honestly, the cinematography is amazing in some parts, and what can I say, I'm a sucker for pre-digital effects. so,yes, while you could certainly find a " better " scary movie to watch, jaws the revenge will remain one of my standby late-night go-to's, due to it's silliness, it's heart, and the fact that it seems like the producers kept the cast happy & were smart enough to supply Caine with a trunk full of rum and free reign to improvise.
plus did I mention I love giant shark movies?
a great movie for people who don't take movies too seriously, and a great movie to watch with friends.
