Rather (2023)

Courage

I'd been a fan for a long time for all his dedication to facts and fairness, but had no idea how instrumental he was in so many important events, like Watergate. And while he definitely had some missteps throughout his career, he stood fast in the onslaught of those who sought to discredit him for their own personal and political gain.

Overall structure of the documentary is well-paced and pretty in-depth, and shows away from glorifying him as a saint. Those that were interviewed were interesting and the balance taken was of someone who loves their job, works hard and won't let disinformation stand up to the truth. I'm glad he's turned to social media for discourse these days. We need more intelligent people engaging the young.

Worst Written Characters Ever

For a predominantly female cast, I could tell the writer was a male before I even double checked. He must thing all women are complete idiots. Not a single one ever had a plan, all they did was give half-hearted screams and run very, very badly. Of course in his defense, Christopher Robin wasn't much better. It was a snooze fest.

I'd had relatively decent hopes for this. The premise was original and the opening animation was lovely. Another reviewer said if they'd made a short from there, it would've been amazing and I agree. But they fleshed out no plot, spent zero on the costuming of the iconic leads (I'm serious, hitting up a Dollar Tree would've been more affective) and left everything with no resolution at the end, presumably to make room for a sequel.

So, I gave it three stars for the start and for encouraging others to use their talents on works now in the public domain. Hopefully something more interesting and exciting will come from it.

The characters are shallow and pretentious. No one is likable, except maybe Tobe.

The dialogue is weak and ridiculous.

The logic is non-existent.

The plot has holes you could drive a semi through.

A lot of the acting was atrocious, especially from professionals who know better.

And questions on the absurdity abounds. Here's some off the top of my head.....

1. If Sean understands why they're willing to bend over backwards to hide the truth from Dorothy, why once the inanity begins, does he let her make every decision?

2. What 'investigative reporter' wouldn't realize it would be national coverage if your child went missing?

3. For all those who have no stake in her life (like the cop, persé), why wouldn't someone tell Dorothy the truth?

4. Did no one miss Dorothy at work? She one went in increasingly more sporadically and it was never addressed.

5. Who has such a dire situation, then alternates extremely between total hardball (I think I'll bury the nanny alive) and pushover (no issues whatsoever when their personal PI seems to switch sides) without any nuance in between?

So in conclusion before I've even bored myself through season three, this might very well be the stupidest so-called horror series I've ever watched. And I mostly appreciate MNS and won't give up on him. But dude, come on. Quit trying to rival how bad The Happening was. We beg you.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (2023)

Seriously Charming

I grew up obsessed with the OG Grease. With the hindsight of adulthood, one realizes the limitations of the original. And although this has its own missteps, anyone who appreciates a fresh approach will love the feminist slant, albeit from a burgeoning sense of new identity. Some of the songs can be a tad clunky, but others (like I Want More in the second episode) are powerhouses. Most of the main characters have decent depth to them and hint at more to come. And the easter eggs are a delight to old school fans who cherish their trips down memory lane with a bit of bite. Although it's not Oscar fare, I'm definitely looking forward to this season and how their stories unfold at Rydell.
