I liked it, if only for Dalton...
30 December 2013
Dalton was an unlucky chap, a man who put too much acting into creating the perfect Bond, he didn't understand that the public wanted something different. Parallels have been and continue to be drawn between him and Daniel Craig in their styles, and it is my opinion (bating some die hard Bond fans) that he was the perfect Bond. Perhaps a little too dour and dark for the times and entering the series after the somewhat overly camp Moore, meant he was even more a change of style. The film on the whole wasn't perfect, you could tell where changes had been made to adapt from Moore to Dalton, and the quips fewer, this was the Bond Fleming envisioned, but perhaps not the one the public expected.

Not Buffy, and somewhat better for it...
30 December 2013
Angel had its links to Buffy, there were crossovers and tie ins, and the similarities at the start of the show were noticeable. But as the seasons progressed and the characters became darker and the plots heavier, it seemed what we were watching was not entirely the same. As times have progressed, it seems audiences desire a darker more gritty version of TV, with shows that don't shy away from the harsher aspects of life, the Wire to name one, are shows favoured for. Angel had its comedic episodes, but the over arching themes were of the dark fight against darkness, being forced into positions where the right path isn't always visible and the seeking of salvation. This show was brilliant, and though it has carried on in comics, it will be sorely missed.

Better than the first..
29 December 2013
This film was never going to be equivalent to the Lord of the Rings, yet unfortunately that is why I have found fault in it. The epic scales of LOTR could never be matched in the Hobbit, and though the second adventure of the dwarfs did increase in action and thrilling suspense, with Smaug's presence being graciously welcomed, it feels far too childish in comparison to LOTR. Perhaps my growing tastes have influenced my review, in that growing up with LOTR and growing older tastes when the Hobbit was released meant I couldn't appreciate it with the same fervour a child would. However it feels that these films seem to garner a lot more humour, and lack the subtlety with which was found in LOTR, not that this is a bad thing, some viewers might find the light heartedness necessary, but for me I feel it detracts from the story. Once again, this film feels like it is lengthened unnecessarily, and the source material extrapolated to create a far more expansive universe than there should be, at a push this could be a duology, not a trilogy.

A movie to compare against
28 December 2013
Not many films can retain a certain air of gravitas without alienating the common movie goer. Though Nolan can be slated for making cerebral films that are dumbed down so that many can get it, it is my belief that this is entirely a meritable ability. With the Dark Knight, we see the clever story lines that Nolan has become known for, become fleshed out with enough action and thrilling suspense that there is no point where boredom starts to creep in. The characters still are believable enough that this film could take place within our modern day society. Unlike the usual Batman films which have been slightly camp affairs with characters that are bound to fiction, Nolan manages to keep the Joker just real enough that the audience fears what he will do next. Every watch of this film highlights the depths to which every actor in this film went, and most of all how developed Ledger's Joker was. I am not an entirely unbiased critic, and me saying that I use this film as a comparison for most other films, with Ledger's Joker, in my mind, being the perfect acting performance, should be taken with a pinch of salt, though I believe this film to be one of the stand out creations of our generation.
