12 Years a Slave (2013)
The most overrated Oscar bait film of all time
You will get nothing from this movie that an hour of a school history lesson couldn't have already told you. I would have thought this was common knowledge. There was literally nothing else to this movie that offered new insights and an opening scene designed to nothing but shock and disgust. There is nothing even admirable about the main character that's worth noting, I don't understand why we are following his story in particular. There is plenty of better movies about history and dehumanisation of races with protagonists worth following, like The Pianist.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
If you're not a Queen fan, you will be after this!!!
I couldn't have imagined a more perfect way to highlight the successes of one of the greatest bands in the world. There is not a single boring moment in this movie!!! Every scene, every shot, every bit of dialogue has been executed magnificently. I'm not sure about the accuracy of the biopic and I don't care. Some complained about the lack of Mercury's sexuality being discussed. Not everything has to be about LGBT just because the man was a gay icon. He was more than his personal life and I think that was also a side point of the film being made the way it was. This serves as a medley and snapshot into Freddie's progress into stardom and what Queen became from hardly anything. Best movie of 2018, it maintains a special place in my heart so much that I went twice to the cinema to watch it and it still didn't feel like enough viewings. This was also the first movie I've seen where I've seen men crying watching this. Cinematic experience I wish I could score 11/10 for.
Deadpool (2016)
Try-hard dross topped such mundane Hollywood humour.
This is another one of those movies that try to be fresh in its genre (which it does achieve) but try exceptionally hard to sound witty and unfunny (which it didn't achieve) and instead end up being downright annoying. Sure there are parts that I really enjoyed, but with the amount of hype this had, I expected it to be the movie of the century. Try Kick-Ass if you want an actual laugh out loud experience. This "Oooh I'm different from all superheroes because I'm arrogant and funny and quick witted" character didn't work and it's not because I didn't get or get offended by the humour. Sometimes it was funny and cool, but 9/10 the jokes just made me roll my eyes. Nice try though. Oh and it is incredibly violent throughout for your average superhero viewing so be warned. I'm not sure if that made me like or hate the movie more, it was just an added feature that did nothing to fuel a reaction from me.
Conor McGregor: Notorious (2017)
Pretty good.
It's hard to fault this movie. Whatever you might think of him, his arrogance, it seems to make sense when you see how hard he has worked to be where he is. Very inspiring, highlighting some of his achievements and the way the movie captures clips of him before his success, it is as if he knew all along that he would one day be a household name. Watch it when you feel demotivated.
La vie d'Adèle (2013)
So awful, style over substance. I laughed out loud in disbelief
If you want to watch an LGBT movie, coming of age movie, or even romantic, do not start here. It is the worst I have seen. I loved Moonlight, Brokeback Mountain, Call me by your name and even the San Junipero episode from Black Mirror. Although I try to enjoy a movie simply for what it is, I was massively underwhelmed.
First off, there is no chemistry. Adele throughout has only one expression on her face - such is an absolute grump that needs to wipe her nose occasionally. I was watching this thinking "does she even like her girlfriend? Does she want to be in this relationship?" A few sex scenes and tears at the end doesn't change that when you watching this movie for a god awful 3 hours and there is not a single thing engaging about the characters. Emma was only slightly more likable and quirky, someone for sure the adolescent me would want to be friends with.
The sex scenes were really drawn out. Really, really, drawn out for seemingly no reason. I have no problem watching any kind of sex scene but the erotica in this movie seems to overpower anything of substance from even happening. There was no point to it and they go on forever. Erotic movies with sex scenes themselves don't even go on for this long.
Sure a large focal point of this movie is about growing up and understanding how relationships cannot always be what you expect, how being young and falling in love can change you, but there was no development from Adele. She looks and behaves exactly the same from start to end, oh, other than getting rid of the messy ponytail. I can't imagine anyone falling in love with such a zombie that the scenes between them crying and arguing were just comical, the constant kissing and touching in the cafe was plain stupid. Like anyone would behave like that in a public place.
The only good thing I would say about the movie was it was fun keeping a lookout on everything that was blue otherise it doesnt even deserve 1 star. The style is great. Besides that, I took nothing else away from this movie that was moving, raw, powerful no romantic. Do not waste your time.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Stunning. A film I will keep coming back to.
Firstly, I read the book as a result of a bad review it had been given and was intrigued to see why it was getting so many divided opinions. Obsessed with it, I then watched the movie keeping my expectations low as I knew there were parts of the story that wouldn't translate well on screen (Most of the book is told through Elio's thoughts & fantasies), especially as it is a small independent film.
However, I was sat stunned for several minutes after the end credits rolled, crying uncontrollably, yet happy and left feeing like this movie cast a spell on me, esp the final moments. This is the best depiction of love and nostalgia I've seen on screen that I felt throughout. There is nothing corny, there is no silly villian. It is at times incredibly poignant, erotic and the chemistry seemed so real that I forgot I was watching a movie. The scenery is stunning and sets the tone to the story. Timothy and Armie really do bring these characters to life in a way I never thought possible, they deserve all the recognition. Some complain there wasn't enough sexuality explored, others complain there was just too much of it. Bore off. Yes it's slow at times, but I can deal with that. As for the lack of solid plot, the characters compensate for that by giving the performances of a lifetime. It's no surprise that Luca wants to make a sequel (of which I'm still in two opinions on).
The only other thing I'll add on the apparently controversial age gap is that just because you disagree with some national laws on consent, doesn't make it immoral on all levels. This is one of those things that will always have divided opinions but it's not Luca and Andre's responsibility to provide everyone an idea of what is or isn't right in everyone's eyes.
Whether people enjoyed this or not, it seems that almost everyone agreed that the father's monologue makes the story the masterpiece that it is. Do yourself a favour and watch it. This is far better than what actually won the best picture. Way better. Thank goodness someone gave it a bad review otherwise I would never have discovered it. I watched it twice in two days. See it for yourself.
