Archer (2009)
It's pretty f****** good!
Archer was far better than I expected. It was like Family Guy with harsher comments, and a coherent story.
This show is centred around the Isis (an international spy agency) agents and they're ridiculous lives. It's not so much that they are just a little odd, they are all so far-fetched, it really shouldn't work yet for some reason, I kept tuning in. Every character has an interesting story to tell or take on things, most should be locked up by now, and the action sequences really do sell the point of mockery.
I have always felt that animation holds more scope for obscurity and absurdness. Archer manipulates this very well. When I think about the show, I can just hear H. Jon Benjamin yelling 'Lana' over and over. Shows that have a catch-phrase seem to sit better with me.
If you love being shocked by language and mainly by an intelligent use of language, to offend (not just cuss words) then you will most probably put this on a loop and love it. It's pretty f****** good.
Smashed (2012)
Smashed is about a scenario we're all familiar with.
Smashed is about a scenario we're all familiar with.
Everyone is having fun and living carefree until one person decides they want to change. It puts a strain on that friendship (or relationship). Only here, we have a married adult couple. They drink a lot and occasionally dabble in drugs. When the wife throws up in front of her primary school class, and pretends she is pregnant to cover up her hangover, she realises she has to change. Kate's (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), partner, Charlie (Aaron Paul) isn't very supportive and maintains drinking himself, in front of her.
It really makes you wonder if the decisions you make whilst being under the influence or addicted to something - albeit a substance, or food, are the decisions you'd make, without it. The tale resolves itself but is far from happy, because of that I find the realism all the more believable.
The moment when the phrase 'moist pussy' was said too me off guard and I definitely laughed out loud and laughed. Great moment and great acting all round, good film.
Spring Breakers (2012)
It's a lot deeper than you think
Spring Breakers needs to stop being compared to films like American Pie and Eurotrip. it's a Harmony Korine film, and though not ground- breaking, I do think this is a good film.
Four girls rob a restaurant so that they can afford to go to Spring break, they end up being arrested for Narcotic use. They are bailed out by a local drug dealer.
I particularly like the editing of this film. Certain lines are repeated over montages, of nostalgic images or of the night before. The cast is relatively good, the drug dealer (James Franco) is cast very well though, I find his image genuinely mortifying.
Don't mistake this for a 'high school kids get drunk and have a lot of sex', it's a lot deeper than that. There's murder and tears (and it's not over guys), and threats, it gets quite violent actually.
Sports Night (1998)
It's a Sorkin show. It's witty. It's comical. It's fast-paced.
It's a Sorkin show. It's witty. It's comical. It's fast-paced. It has an emphasis on elements other than the sexual relations of the characters, whilst maintaining a subtle longing from the viewer of those romantic desires. There are some love stories (Dana & Casey, Jeremy & Natalie, and Dan &
.well, Dan and his adoring ego probably) but the premise of the show manages to place them lower down in importance than the actual running of the show (there's a joke here, I'm pretty proud of it).
Peter Krause (Casey) shines in his role. Josh Charles (Dan) is perfect for his. I personally think that Felicity Huffman (Dana) is the standout actress of the show, this paralleled with the dialogue stand this show miles above most of the sitcoms I have watched. Sorkin creates a fictional Sports News show, and somehow gets everything right. I'm under the impression that Sorkin can do no wrong. It's like the Newsroom, but funnier!
We Can Be Heroes (2005)
Lilley
Some of the characters from Angry Boys were adapted from this show, can be seen as a prequel. Ja'mie and the Sims twins were the two best characters of the show, so I'm glad they were continued in Lilleys' work. There is a different outcome to the characters though, spoiler.
The comedy is much the same as Angry Boys and Summer Heights High, portraying exaggerated stereotypes, sticking with his Chinese student excelling in his field battling with his stern parent/s. There are still a lot of cuss words, so this show may not appeal to everyone, but I laughed a lot.
The show focuses on 'Australian of the year' contests, the plot is a little silly and this is the worst of the 3 shows I've seen by Lilley, but it's still a nice starter, and if you're interested in something that isn't as dull as the current comedy sitcoms, this will do the trick for you!
Before Midnight (2013)
I loved the realism.
It has been quite a while since I saw this film, yet the same thoughts resonate it my mind, this film had a very delicate beauty about it. The film was nearly entirely about the dialogue. The beautiful scenery was breath-taking too.
The majority of the film was set in a village named Kardamyli in Greece. The two lead characters converse about philosophy, nostalgia and what ifs
for the most part. The group dinner scene is a nice spectacle, funny, with just a simple layout of food, wine and communication.
What I loved about this film was the realism about it. It felt as though we were peering in, on a day in their lives, rather than cutting between scenes, it was authentically done.
It made me want to grab my loved ones and head to a hot country and walk through fields with our only our minds for entertainment. I will now proceed to watch the previous 2 films. In case I haven't mentioned it and you wish to know, it could be considered a tale about love, but it is no 'For Lovers Only', instead this film is about compromise, wishful thoughts and the woes of life.
PS, I forgot to mention the actress Julie Delpy has this 'normal' look about her, as in she looks real and not fake, not like all the other actresses, and I felt like some applause should be given her.
Game of Thrones (2011)
The uproar on the internet intrigued me.
Fantasy is not a genre I usually on well with. S03E09 'The Rains of Castamere' caused so much uproar on the internet that it was hard not to intrigue me.
I gave the show a second chance, it took a while for me to think it as more than mediocre (I think this was because it takes a while to learn who everyone is and what they are related to / trying to achieve in the show - it's a big cast), but when I did, oh god, did the TV shock me.
There's a few moments where your jaw will drop. but after a while - the mistreatment of characters becomes second nature, despite this, this show still finds way to cause dismay.
The end of Season 1 with Jason Momoas' character, the beginning of Season 2 (with the babies), oh and let's not forget S03E09. I mean, holy s*** - what happened. It's just. I'm not going to give an explanation about this episode, or this show because, one didn't sell it for me. It's very popular. it has comical and witty dialogue. There are so many story-lines and characters, intertwining to satisfy your thirst. Fabulous TV. Peter Dinklage was my favourite part about the show in episode 1 and that is still the case at the end of the 3rd Season. Daenerys a close second. She's 'bad*ss'. I'm still thinking about that episode. Roll on S04!
