Rivette-directed Balzac story about love?
23 February 2008
I did not like this film -- I found it difficult to understand, ragged transitions between scenes, and that it had no point, not to mention many unanswered questions and facts that neither matched the film nor fit the plot. The plot was thin and uninteresting. And if this is love, I don't want any part of it! Many others in the theater walked out before it was over. I know Rivette is an excellent director, but I think he fell down on this one. I guess the acting was okay, but there was so little conversation in the film that it was difficult to tell. Frankly, and I'm sorry to say this, it was like watching 4 coats of paint dry -- consecutively. One of the most boring I've ever seen. I would like to know how this film played in France.

A recently released-from-prison pedophile tries to find a life for himself

An excellent film, especially for a first-time feature film by this director. But an absolute tour de force for Kevin Bacon. Bravo! Bravo! On screen, he became the character. I could feel his every emotion, understand his every facial movement. He was brilliant. If he is not nominated for all the major "best actor" awards for 2004, there is something wrong with the system!

The film pulled me in different directions simultaneously -- the character's crimes were repugnant and gut-wrenching, but in some way I became sympathetic to this bottom-dweller, and hoped for his moral recovery and acceptance back into a society that has little sympathy for this kind of human scum.

Bacon's abilities by facial gestures and body language to convey his character's understanding of his affliction and finally, I think, a desire to truly overcome his urges, is some of the best acting I've ever had the privilege to see.

I hope that this film will finally give Kevin Bacon the accolades and recognition for his work that he so richly deserves.
