Life or Something Like It (2002)
A movie viewers thoughts
I have seen this film and enjoyed it! So it is not a must-see romantic comedy but I could at least sit through this one and understand it, unlike something acclaimed such as English Patient.
A self absorbed, egocentric, perfectionist journalist interviewed a homeless man claiming to be a prophet, learned her fate is sealed 1 week from the date of interview.
As he predicts the local baseball team win, a weather forecast & natural disaster...she starts to become aware that her fate may yet be fulfilled come Thursday.
She is conflicted and emotionally upset during the first few days then learns to live life as it should be while desperately trying to prove the prophet wrong.
The time winds down and the suspense of whether she will live or dies keeps you guessing. Will the plane crash, will she get hit by a bus, will something else happen? Up until the point where it happens! Very enjoyable movie most certainly better then tonight's current choices.
Webs (2003)
Arachnid Army more appropriate title
I had seen this movie just days before Halloween 2004. I noticed it around lunch-time and it was an interesting description in my menu box so I decided to watch it. Seriously only a movie only suitable for late night TV...you know, after Conan but before the infomercials sorta deal.
Although this movie has very little to do with webs, it does have a lot to do with spiders, refer to my heading if you need a refresher.
I found the idea behind the story absolutely fascinating. A hidden nuclear generator, a scientist and a believable portal...Would have been a good start to a cool fantasy but then it goes downhill after 15-20 minutes.
The cast is poor with no memorable performances, poor quality queen who has had her breasts amplified...considering spiders don't carry breasts. As well as poor sound effects. An obvious low budget movie though the cast has tried.
SPOILER:
4 electricians stumble upon a hidden nuclear generator while on a job. They fiddle with the buttons and open a portal. 2 workers fall into the portal and it closes...scrambling to figure out what is going on, the party still in our world seeks help while the other party observers their surroundings.
Help does not arrive so they open the portal and follow through meeting up in a parallel dimension. They encounter a race of human spiders dubbed soldiers. After a death and chase they are saved by survivors.
Now it gets boring...they hide, talk a bit, try to build another portal then attack the hive. After losing 2 more electricians they open the portal and escape returning to our world...some 200 million years ago.
Sounds interesting huh?
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Must see musical
After defeating Grease as my all time favourite musical, Fiddler on the roof now has top spot. This capturing tale lives up to it's name.
Set in a Jewish village of Antevka, Russia around early 1900's, the small village is about to make some gigantic changes for traditional Jews. Balancing life between god and man, the local Jewish population has to deal with the changes of modernizing Russia as well as daughters wishing to follow their hearts instead of the trusted method of tradition.
Tevye, The main character is well played by Topol as well as his wife Golde played by Norma Crane. The supporting cast is as solid as all film-makers wished theirs would be or should have been.
I found most of the songs very entertaining as well as exciting. Catchy tunes as well as solid storyline make this a movie people would like to see again and again. I sure do!
If you think Grease, Sound of music or Mary Poppins were good...don't miss this one!
Fargo (1996)
Must see
Fargo is a very involving movie. The performances from the leading roles of Frances McDormand and William H. Macy, characters on both sides of the law give you two very different view points.
Although this is based on actual events, it is not as violent as people might expect. Gunfire is inevitable however the deceased were given dignity and bloodshed was very minimal. Used only to make a point!
The humor used was very well blended into a serious movie which I personally think is why this movie was so successful. Any other B.O.T.S would have flunked with so little action so when at the video store on Friday night and unsure which movie to pick, Fargo is always a good choice.
