Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All (2024)
Awful and subpar
Taylor Tomlinson's previous specials were comedic genius, were Taylor used her history of anxiety, depression and her growing up ever so brilliantly to create a show that wasn't only relatable as she touched many aspects of every-day life, but was also hilarious and comedy gold.
But unfortunately, this third special doesn't even come close to their predecessors. Taylor uses old jokes and repeats them endlessly, and it doesn't take long before you realize that her entire special is about one thing only: dating. And the dating jokes are not even good ones as she rehashes old material. There are very few new jokes thrown in there, but they're not really good.
Interaction with audience was also awkward and weird. I've seen her interact with audiences in many YouTube videos of shows she's done in clubs, and she's actually very good. She wasn't trying too hard and was real, genuine and funny. But in "Have it All" it's scripted and it's painfully shows. There's nothing natural about the interactions, and for some reason Taylor resorts to "insulting" the ones she interacts with, and not in a smart and funny way.
For someone who films their third special, she also seemed very uncomfortable and nervous. She was talking way too fast like she was hurrying or trying to do as much jokes as she can, which also hurt her delivery- which is usually very good.
If there'll be a fourth special, I'd probably watch. I still believe Taylor is very talented and very funny, but she needs to come with new material and be more herself. That's what made her previous shows so good. Here it felt like she's trying too hard, and the end result has left a lot to be desired.
I guess we truly can't have it all sometimes.
Skibidi Toilet (2023)
Remember the movie "Ass" from "Idiocracy"?
Well, this is the equivalent.
In case some of you don't remember or don't know: "Idiocracy" depicts the adventures of an average guy who finds himself in the year 2505- a dystopian future where humanity have been dumbed down completely, so munch so, they can't even solve basic problems. In that future, the most popular movie is "Ass"- 90 minutes of showing an ass on the screen that does nothing. Well, occasionally fart. It won 8 Oscars, including for best script.
"Skibidi Toilet" is pretty much "Ass". It has no meaning, it's pointless, it has no plot, no real progression. It just is.
What you do have is disembodied heads attached to toilets, singing some stupid song while they seem to attack everything that moves and seem to have evil agendas- and the Cameramen, an opposing force to the toilets, hell bent on eliminating that threat.
And that it. Nothing more, nothing less. Every "episode" is about one minute, and they're all pretty much the same: some carnage done by the toilets, the Cameramen stops them, one side gains an technological advantage for awhile, then the other side even the odds and gains the upper hand, for awhile, while the opposing finds a way to get the upper hand again.... You get the picture.
Oh, and tons of explosions...
Why are they fighting, who are the those toilets, how they mutate, adapt, create advance tech, or why are they so obsessed with that stupid song, who are the Cameramen and what are their agendas- is anyone's guess. There's no effort to explain anything in this series or even give context. It's just never-ending expulsions and carnage. And while some do try to explain the "lore" and subtexts of this series- THERE ISN'T. This show has no meaning whatsoever, other than to get you addicted to the latest dumb thing and rot your brain. Some say that this is an allegory to how stupid is war is ridiculous, seeing as the show doesn't even try to show the consequences of a prolong war (and no one seem to really be affected by this war). But what it really does is glorify violence and explosions just for the sake of it.
Not gonna talk about the animation, as it's pretty crude and lacks any real creativity.
The only reason this is so popular, is because it's lowbrow, pointless, meaningless- much like "Ass". It has now real value, no hidden meaning, no real story to tell. It just brain candy of the worst kind. Watch at your own discretion , but there are better stuff out there (like, for example, "The Walten Files", a creative, intelligent and engaging psychological horror).
And if you're a parent reading this- you may want to distance your children from this brain-rot insanity.
Silk Stalkings: Ghosts of the Past (1994)
Another pointless, boring episode in a really bad season
While "Silk Stalkings" is not Shakespeare, it's an entertaining tv show. It has a good balance of eye candy, great humor and interesting cases. The third season was definitely the high point.
But something happened between the third and fourth season. The producers must've decided to fix something that wasn't broken, because up to this point, every single episode is not only below par, but boring and pointless. The focus shifts drastically from the cases and sceneries (and even the eye candy) to the personal lives of the detectives. The problem is that most issues they face are resolved at the end of each episode, and the next one is like nothing happened. The cases are not only insignificant, but have moved the background as the writing focus on soap-opera-like plots.
"Ghosts of the Past" is easily the worse of the lot. 80% of the episode is focused on Lorenzo and his girlfriend fighting over who pays for dinner... I mean, seriously??? The case they're supposed to investigate pretty much solves itself as both Chris and Rita are barely doing any investigation, and even Paula Trickey, who is a bombshell and is dressed in some really sexy dresses, can't save this episode as the script itself is pretty much trash (and Paula is an great actress too, but she had nothing to work with here).
Also, and I don't know why, both Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture seem so out of it this season, like they couldn't care less. They're levels of performance have dropped significantly this season, and in most episodes they're just seem to phone in their lines.
(And have you also noticed how the bright colors that dominated the first three seasons, are pretty much gone and were replaced with dull ones? It's like no one cares anymore this season. I wonder if something has happened behind the scenes. Maybe the fact that Rob Estes wanted to leave at the end of the third season had something to do with it... But whatever the reason, the fourth season is really plain bad. And this, and "Time Share" and "Vengeance" are the worse of the lot and an example to had bad this season is).
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Seasons 1-5 are great. seasons 6-7 good, season 8 a disaster
B99 is a great show, with lots of fantastic jokes and delivers, with great character development and plotlines, some quirky personalities, and all around fun atmosphere. Seasons 1-5 showcased not only these, but some great acting skills and wonderful writing.
Seasons 6-7 weren't bad at all, as they still retained the unique quirkiness of the show, but it suffered a lot by Chelsea Perretti (Gina) leaving. Don't get me wrong, the quality was still high, the jokes and stories were still great, but it always felt like something was missing- and that something was Gina's truly exquisite personality.
Season 8, the final season, is where the show drops the ball, big time. Not only did they decide to go all politically-correct, but they also scarified the humor and quirkiness for it, making the show boring and pretty much unwatchable. Suddenly there are a lot more serious, dramatic scenes (and no, it is not typical of B99 at all), and most of the characters, especially Holt, are preaching at least once per episode. Also, it was jarring- a police comedy which is suddenly against everything that is police. How does that even work? It clearly doesn't.
Even Doug Judy's last appearance doesn't help, as the episode was only mildly funny, and the two-part series finale was disappointing. It was a heist gone wrong multiple times, just without the humor and funny moments, with the ending itself rendering the entire two-parter completely pointless (what was the point of all the melodramatic goodbyes if they're still going to do those heists?!)
Instead of giving the fans a proper send-off, we were treated to silly, half-hearted moments with a lot of references to past episodes and seasons. As even the heist fizzles out and ends in a whimper, so does the series- ends with a whimper instead of a bang.
B99 will always be a good show, maybe one of the best, but the eighth season leaves a real bd taste in the mouth. If you're new to the series, watch seasons 1-7, to enjoy the show's highs and the really fantastic unique humor, and stop at the end of the 7th season, becasue honestly, the ending of the 7th seasons is a much better send-off than what we got in the 8th.
