How to Stay Married (2018)
How... why???
It feels like a satirical take on comedy, exposing the flaws of the modern sitcom, but somehow it's not satire. It's almost at the point of anti comedy but again not intentionally. Australia seems to have an incredible knack for making absolutely abominable comedy series and this just brought the bar to a new low as hard as that is to believe. My jaw literally dropped the first time I saw this... people wrote this... people being paid for their writing ability wrote this... producers putting up large amounts of money were happy enough to sign off on these takes and decided to print them.
7500 (2019)
A fantastic, well thought-out movie
The tension that this film creates is palpable and it does this without resorting to the usual Hollywood cliches such as over the top musical cues for anything vaguely dramatic, claustrophobic and carefully restrained cinematography (no CGI plane shots from every angle) and without dumbing things down for the audience. This is also by far the most realistic depiction of an airliner cockpit in any movie that I've seen and they clearly did their research when making sure they get things as accurate as possible for this film. Even the sound of the engines on takeoff is exceptionally realistic without the usual almost rocket launch sound effects while the plane is heading down the runway, followed by absolute silence while the plane is cruising. It's quite obvious that this is a real A320 (or variant) cockpit and it shows. So as someone that is sick of Hollywood dumbing down aviation scenes in movies, this really stands out and the amount of work and research that must have gone into this is incredible. All in all an excellent film.
Get Krack!n (2017)
Profoundly Unfunny
I tried watching this a few times and it's mostly been a painful cringeworthy experience. The concept is good but this basically has no idea what it wants to be: lazy satire interspersed with weak slapstick. The one-liner delivery of the hosts conveys the impression that they both think they are being hilarious which is usually the first sign that something isn't going to be funny. It's deadpan but stifled. Swearing can also be funny in its own right depending on the delivery but here again it feels forced; that sad impression that they feel they are being edgy and controversial just for swearing. All in all everything about this feels slightly forced and directionless. A cringeworthy experience.
Travel Guides (2017)
Comes with a free lobotomy.
One of the shows you come away from fully aware of the serious loss of brain cells that has occurred. I don't really know what else to say, it sucks, most of the cast seem like they're not all there, it's not funny...
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Not an enjoyable film
This started off strong and I was very excited to see where this headed. Unfortunately it wasn't anywhere good. The references to the shining felt forced in a lot of places, and didn't particularly add much to the story. It felt like this was shoehorned into a rather disturbing story about children being abducted. And I really do wonder about the choice to include that scene with the child being tortured and murdered. It was completely unnecessary to show to that extent and it disturbed me that somebody decided to include it to this extent. Child abduction and torture is not "entertainment" to me.
Wayward Pines (2015)
Refreshingly good...
I notice some people automatically dismiss this show when they see M. Night's name attached to it. I can understand where the Shyamalan hate is coming from, I'm not a fan either, but the fact is, it's based on a series of books, he's a producer and he directed one episode... That said it is actually a great show in my opinion. It caught my attention from the very first trailer. I've seen people upset that it seems to be a variation of Twin Peaks, Lost and various other shows. To be honest, even if this is the case (which in my opinion is a very loose association), it doesn't make the show any less interesting to me. Again it goes back to the books, not M. Night... I am happy to see a show that is genuinely interesting in the mystery/ paranormal genre after such a dire selection in recent years. I'm a huge fan of the Twilight Zone and this seems to capture some of that atmosphere for me. That's something that this show has... atmosphere, not explosions and jump scenes every 2 minutes, real atmosphere. And if inspiration is drawn from Twin Peaks or Lost or the X-Files, I can think of far worse things to use.
Mrs. Brown's Boys (2011)
What's going on?
I feel like I'm losing my mind... everyone seems to love this and I can't even begin to comprehend why. Now I love British comedy like the Mighty Boosh, Monty Python, Peter Cooke & Dudley Moore, IT Crowd, Facejacker, Brass Eye... the list goes on. This is just insulting: it's like a laugh track surgically stapled to some painfully unfunny situations. Most of the humor seems to hinge off the fact that the main character is a man dressed up as a woman. Imagine that! The absurdity!! What will they think of next?! I can imagine this would've been a hilarious concept back in 1950 but come on. And I don't have any problem with crude humor... if it's funny and has a purpose rather than just being there to facilitate a knee jerk awkward giggle response because the basic material isn't up to scratch, which is what we have here. Maybe the era of quality British comedy is over and my tastes haven't 'evolved' that far yet. Anyhoo, rant over, I'm going to rethink a few things.
