Simmba (2018)

A typical Rohit Shetty Film with masala entertainment at it's best!!
5 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A typical potboiler film with masala entertainment at its best, which is Rohit Shetty's ishtyle!! Whenever a film is helmed by Rohit Shetty, audiences can expect without a doubt that it would contain all those elements which is Rohit Shetty's formula for every film, i.e. action, comedy, drama and romance!! And "Simmba" manages to deliver on all these aspects!!

It wouldn't be wrong to say that Rohit Shetty likes to make films which are of his "comfort zone" as his objective is to make films with classic entertainment which doesn't require much thinking per se. But the main factor is how he manages to tackle every film of his with all these same elements and still emerges to deliver pure unadulterated entertainment!! That is his biggest strength and no one can doubt that!!

He is the only or one of the few filmmakers who goes with the "tried-and-tested" formula with his films, yet never failing on that for which he deserves all the success coming its way!!

Sure, the plot is nothing unique or novel as it's the story of a corrupt cop who tries to mend his ways after an unfortunate incident takes place which shakes him!! If you would have seen the trailer, then it wouldn't be wrong to say that much of the story is within the trailer itself. But what makes it engaging despite its flaws is all those elements (mentioned above) which are put through by the wonderful performances of the star cast.

Ranveer Singh manages to deliver another power-packed performance after giving a "dark and intense" performance in "Padmaavat". He manages to carry the film on his shoulders and he deserves all the success!!

Sara Ali Khan is beautiful and attractive, no two opinions on that and acts decently.

Sonu Sood as the "antagonist" is another force to reckon with!! He manages to give a great performance nonetheless!!

But, it would be safe to say that everyone would go beserk from the moment when "Ajay Devgan" would appear on the screen!! His screen-time would bring all the whistles and claps and would make everyone happy!!

Added to that is the cameo with another superstar whose name begins with the same alphabet "A" i.e. "Akshay Kumar". One couldn't miss his appearance for sure and audiences are sure to be in a treat after watching him, there's something special.

Music is good especially songs like "Aankh Marey" and "Tere Bin". Action is pure Rohit Shetty's level!! Screenplay could have been tighter!! First half was predictable, but second half manages to raise the film with a good amount of quotient!!

Overall, "Simmba" delivers pure unadulterated entertainment in a typical Rohit Shetty's formula!! A good entertaining film which manages to end the year "2018" on a high note!! Good effort by the whole team!!

A technical marvel for Indian Cinema!!
19 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
With the first part of "Robot" which was high on entertainment, it's sequel was much anticipated ever since we witnessed its "First Teaser"!! And with a "Director" like "Shankar" who created the first part so well, expectations from this one were bound to be high and he has managed to deliver upto those expectations!!

As most of the sequels falls flat due to poor storyline or some weak links here and there, this one ticks all the boxes, good storyline, good screenplay and well-executed performances and direction!!

With the simple storyline of how our use of technology is risking the lives of all the other creatures (apart from "humans") and "birds" being most prone to them, this movie makes us realise that how we are not alone in this world and that we must pay attention to the lives of other creatures instead of shortening their lives with our endless use of technology and smartphones to "no limits": this movie delivers this message out loud and clear and only someone being deaf(from his "brains" instead of "ears") won't be able to recognise this message!!

"Akshay Kumar" being the "antagonist" gives a powerful performance as "Pakshirajan"!! He gives a tough competition to "Rajnikanth" who also gives a superb performance as "Chitti", "Dr.Vaseegaran" and the "2.0 Version" of Chitti.

Supporting cast with "Amy Jackson", "Adil Hussain" and "Sudhanshu Pandey" are adequate in their roles!!

Direction is highly effective in the "CGI" and action sequences!! With "Baahubali" and now with "2.0", Indian Cinema has proved their mettle in giving a tough competition to the major "Hollywood Films" and all credit goes to the genius minds behind these movies which have made Indian Cinema proud to be globally recognised!!

Use of "3D" was really effective and it should be applauded!!

Therefore, "2.0" is a powerful film which deserves all the success coming its way!! Whether there would be a "3.0" or not is yet to be seen!!

Kudos to the whole team!!

Good Entertainment Value!! Take a bow, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan!!
9 November 2018
The huge anticipation with this movie now finally comes to an end. Although there are a whole lot of negative reviews, it is just absurd to spread this whole negativity about this movie. Maybe because people have watched too much of "Pirates of the Caribbean" series and would have expected this film to be better than that, or to beat it and other highly action-adventure "Hollywood Movies" with it, or to even compare it with the "Baahubali Franchise" is just bizarre. Every film has its own fate and it's unfair to compare such movies and thereby undermining the efforts of the people behind this movie.

Of course, it may not be that "Ground-Breaking" or "Marvellous" as one would expect from an "Aamir Khan Movie" all the time but just because he's given some amazing films in the recent past which were "socially relevant". But that doesn't mean that every film of his would have a social stigma or a message attached to it. He's an actor after all at the end of the day and he carries his profession well i.e. to "entertain" the audience to the fullest.

Coming to the film now, its a "fictional story" which depicts the history of India and their journey of rebellion from the rulers during the "Colonial Era". Although the plot of the film may not be "novel" or "unique", which again, is expected from an "Aamir Khan film" and if people had expected that, then it isn't the case this time. It is an "action-adventure" movie which delivers "pure entertainment".

There is nothing extra in terms of "Storyline" as it revolves around the rebellion for "Freedom" but what makes the movie engaging is the high-octane drama, intense action sequences and wonderful performances!!

And coming to the performances, "Aamir Khan" is just charming as always!! I think he has played his most "complex character" to date. He is just ruthless and conniving. He surprises you and even shocks you in most of the sequences but also manages to deliver chuckles and laughs simultaneously and that is the "biggest strength" of his character. "Mr.Perfectionist" perfectly dwells in his character, yet again, as always, no two opinions on that!!

"Amitabh Bachchan" was, is, and will always remain a "LEGEND" for generations to come!! And he proves it to a large, large extent with this film!! Your jaw would simply drop when you would see him in action, which is just superb!! Especially the "face-off" between Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan takes the movie to another level altogether!! Their chemistry is fantastic and would be remembered for a long time!! Sir, you are phenomenal!!

"Katrina Kaif" has again(like "Dhoom 3") a smaller role in this film. But she is "highly effective" and a force to reckon with when it comes to "Dancing". I think she has simply "Mastered" the field of "Dancing" to another level and it's yet to be seen if any other actress would be able to match up to her dancing skills!! Kudos to her effective portrayal!!

"Fatima Sana Shaikh" has an equally effective on-screen presence!! She manages to stand on her own feet in some of the sequences which is admirable!!

"Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub" comes as a wonderful surprise!!

"Lloyd Owen" is decent as the "antagonist".

Direction is really good when it comes to action-adventure scenes and the visual effects just enhances it further!!

As far as "Soundtrack" is concerned, it doesn't have many songs but I loved "Manzoor-E-Khuda" and "Suraiyya" after that.

Although the movie gets predictable at some points but it also gets unpredictable at the other. Its a good entertaining film which would be loved by the masses. Even families can enjoy it.

Keeping aside the "Box-office" and "Criticism", this film has its own charm and flavour which is meant to be enjoyed and perhaps "Diwali" was the "Best Occasion" in which it got released.

It may not be that good compared to other movies of "Aamir Khan" but one should remember that movies are for entertainment, and this movie delivers that!!

Way better than most of the other movies which have underperformed. Hoping that it becomes a success!

Realistic wonderful film with a strong impact!
27 September 2014
MARDAANI grabs your attention from the commencement and never relents. Padding the proceedings with several intense episodes, MARDAANI eventually becomes the good versus evil fight as the protagonist makes her way to the baddie behind the baddies. On the whole, MARDAANI is relevant, powerful and inspiring with a top notch performance by Rani Mukerji. Worth a watch! MARDAANI is a crime drama, which is packed with action and thrills. Rani Mukerji plays a tough cop who does her job with her heart and mind. She puts in her blood and sweat to bust a human-trafficking racket. The show she puts together on the big screen is simply awesome! Overall, watch it for one and only Rani Mukerji! She will blow your mind!! Hats off to the cast and crew also for delivering a realistic experience with a strong impact leaving us spellbound!!

Good attempt!
8 September 2014
Main Tera Hero (MTH) is a glittering vehicle for star son Varun Dhawan to drive, which he does with practiced panache. However, even more than Junior, MTH has his dad David Dhawan stamped all over it. The plot is familiar Dhawan territory - one boy, two babes, a mansion and many clowns - but with new landmarks, from plunging bikinis to lip-glossed kisses, thrown in. Those seeking movies with meaning, note - Main Tera Hero is a pav bhaji picture, quick, spicy, hot. It has the depth of a comic strip but it also has its neon-shaded fun. For those who want a light laugh, here's your boy. On the whole, MAIN TERA HERO is a wild, wacky, madcap entertainer that has the unmistakable stamp of the master of entertainers -- David Dhawan. An over the top plot, humor quotient and performances are three aces the film stands on. The film should work well with admirers of typical Bollywood masalathons, also because Varun Dhawan pulls off the act with flamboyance and bowls you over with an uproarious act in this zany entertainer. Go, have fun and laugh out loud!

Delightful film with noble intention!
8 September 2014
The film's good bits, however, often feel squashed under the weight of its melodrama and its bloated running time of 2 hours and 35 minutes. There is some lofty sermonizing by at least two different characters, and an over-manipulative song-montage of abject poverty that attempts to squeeze a lump out of your throat. Despite the uneven writing, the film works because it has heart. While the first half is breezy, with several pleasurable moments and witty one-liners laced into the proceedings, the film does a U-turn in the post-interval portions. The goings-on, all of a sudden, turn serious, while the humor goes missing. On the whole, BHOOTHNATH RETURNS is made with noble intentions and the message it conveys resonates in the second hour, although those looking for entertainment may find it lacking in the second half. Watch it for some wonderful moments and superior performances by Bachchan Sr., Boman Irani and the child artist Parth Bhalerao.

Aata Maji Satakli!! SINGHAM RETURNS is a mind-blowing thriller!!!
16 August 2014
Many movies have showcased us about the police and the chain of events they face in their daily lives! But no one has shown it with such compassion, intensity and strikingly than what Rohit Shetty had shown us in SINGHAM (2011). And now again, he comes up with another sequel and one of the most anticipated films of the year: SINGHAM RETURNS! When the spectators will go to watch the film, they would have only one question in mind: Will SINGHAM RETURNS be able to surpass and deliver more entertainment than its predecessor? Let's find out:

Story: The story is set in Mumbai where Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgan) now D.C.P (Deputy Commissioner Of Police) tries to eliminate crime with his own methods which brings his influence to many people! But the stake he would face this time would be more challenging and will he be able to fight it back or resist it covers the rest of the film!

Cast: Ajay Devgan: Ajay is in top form yet again! He has played a cop who possesses remarkable qualities like determination, resourcefulness, influence and toughness with such dedication! The intensity that he delivers truly proves that he is a star performer! In short, SINGHAM is incomplete and vague without Ajay Devgan! Another smashing performance!

Kareena Kapoor Khan: She has a limited screen presence but the effort that she puts in playing a fun-loving and bubbly girl is truly adorable and admirable! She has the power to stand on her own feet!

Amole Gupte: This actor has made a refreshing comeback in the film! his dialogues is another fact that adds to the power of the film! He pulls his negative character with efficiency! If you liked his performance in KAMINEY (2009), then you would surely like him in this one also!

Anupam Kher: He is just remarkable! Although having a limited role, his quality of acting is just like an icing on the cake! Another commendable performance!

Zakir Hussain: His acting is quite good and he compliments very well especially in scenes with Amole GUpte!

Direction: Rohit Shetty as we all know is the master of film-making! His effort was truly wonderful especially when he made the predecessor and now has delivered yet another power-packed film!! The screenplay and the story is riveting and absorbing! Dialogues are also charming and the writing is truly striking! And the action moments are incomplete without the blasting of cars which is formula in every movie that he has delivered and let me tell you, the actions in this film are truly jaw-dropping and more powerful than the predecessor!! Way to go Rohit and keep making these powerful films!

Music: The music is although very less as compared to its predecessor but with the exception of 2 songs which are truly remarkable: "Aata Maji Satakli" which is a rage among people as it is composed and sung by "Yo Yo Honey Singh" and "Kuch Toh Hua Hai" which is so melodious and a soulful song!

Overall Verdict: On the whole, SINGHAM RETURNS is a hi-octane thriller with jaw- dropping actions, powerhouse dialouges and smashing performances especially by Ajay Devgan who is the soul of the film! And it has the trademark of one and only Rohit Shetty who has given a powerful film once again! It will shatter the records of its predecessor and is a sure-shot blockbuster! Go, join the fight!

Kick (2014)
10/10
KICK is a KICK-ASS entertainer!!!!
26 July 2014
The wait is finally over!! The tremendous expectations and the hype for KICK is truly worthy!! Every film which contains Salman Khan, one thing is clear: "Unabashed Entertainment"!! And yet, this star gives it to you time and again!! So here we go:

Story: Let me tell you that the story is truly different from what you've come across in most of the films. Devi Lal Singh (Salman Khan) is an adventurous guy and his life is incomplete without one thing: "KICK"! Without KICK, there is no fun, no excitement for him! He falls for a psychiatrist Shaina (Jacqueline Fernandez), Shaina doesn't like Devi first but after she gets to know about him, she also shows her affection for him. But due to uncertain circumstances, their life has another plans! Adding to it, there are other characters which makes the movie more interesting!

Cast: Salman Khan: There are simply no words to describe this actor! He truly raises his bar for his films and his stardom with every film!! Ever since WANTED (2009), his fame has reached to another level with huge leaps and bounds!! All I can say is, especially to all the Salman fans: "Rejoice"!! For the actor delivers yet another power-packed performance!

Jacqueline Fernandez: She is going to get more praises and fan-following after this film, which will change her image for various people who think that she is just a glam quotient in films!! I can say that she emerges as a competitor to all the "A-List Actresses" in town!! She is beautiful, glamorous, charming and sexy!! She is truly remarkable in a full-fledged role!

Randeep Hooda: This actor is no less than the top actors!! He is just magnificent!! Not many actors have the opportunity to have a screen presence with a star like Salman! But he truly compliments very well with scenes with Salman especially!!

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: He is a masterpiece!! He charms you in every role that he has played, whether big or small!! And as the antagonist, he succeeds with expectations you might have from him!! His screen presence and the dialogues he delivers will take you by surprise!!

Direction: Sajid Nadiadwala, as we all know, has given many hits time and again but what you see with this film, you will never believe that it is directed by a debutant!! It doesn't feel that you are watching a typical Bollywood film! And this film proves that Bollywood is at par with Hollywood!! The film has an international level with never- before seen actions, remarkable thrilling moments, powerhouse dialogues and the extravagant screenplay!!! And getting all these elements from a first-time director is no easy task!! Worth applauding!!

Music: The music is another element that compliments to this enterprise!! "Jumme Ki Raat" is a rage among people, "Hangover" sung by Salman himself is another wonderful creation, "Yaar Na Miley" is another tune worth hearing! Another version of "Hangover" by Shreya Ghoshal is truly beautiful! Overall, another well-composed music from Himesh Reshammiya!

Overall Verdict: On the whole, KICK is a Bollywood film that has tremendous appeal and repeat value!! It will be loved by classes and masses especially for Salman fans, this film is no less than to "rejoice and celebrate"!! It has a bland first hour, but the second hour takes the film to another level and that also, with terrific elements at the right time!! It has all the power to rewrite "box-office history" and will be glorious in days to come!!

A nice watch with comedy, drama, romance and emotions!
11 July 2014
We have seen many Bollywood movies which provides masala, melodrama, humor and typical romance! This formula is now repetitive in every movie nowadays. But it is more important to note that the filmmaker provides the right content at right time and it's not an easy job! Shashank Khaitan and Karan Johar's latest offering "HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA" does it right and their effort is admirable! So here we go:

Story: Like every other Bollywood rom-com, the story of the film has the same formula: Boy meets Girl, Girl meets Boy, Love Blossoms, Circumstances bring them apart, They reunite but it is a long journey and they have to go and must win the approval of the family (especially bride's one)! And it provides all the elements like humor, comedy, drama, romance etc. at the right moments and at the right time which most of the films fail to do so!

Cast: Varun Dhawan: He has completely evolved as an actor and he has won the status of a performer this time!! He pulls off the comic and emotional situations efficiently which is no cakewalk!! He has a long way to go!! You can't take your eyes off from him!

Alia Bhatt: If 2013 was Deepika Padukone's year as she gave four back-to back hits (Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela), then 2014 is Alia Bhatt's year for sure!! Her choice of diverse roles is surely bringing her status higher and higher! After Highway (2014), and 2 States (2014), she gives a superb performance in this one too!!!

Siddharth Shukla: He plays his character with efficiency! Acting on Television and in a Movie is two different situations and he truly justifies his character!!

Ashutosh Rana: He is adequate as Alia's Father. His sequences with Varun is truly striking!!

I'd also like to mention those two actors who played Varun's friends, are brilliant!! Along with Varun, they are sure to bring smiles and laughs on your face!

Diresction: Debutant Director Shashank Khaitan has made a wonderful effort by bringing a rom-com with delights and with flourish!! The screenplay is truly intriguing and is in sync with the mood of the film! As for Karan Johar, I can watch any of his film blindly as when he provides any film, it is always refreshing and engaging!!!

Music: The music is just decent in this film with the exception of two songs that are simply outstanding: "Samjhavan" is absorbing and soulful and "Saturday Saturday" is foot-tapping and is the pick of the lot!!

Overall Verdict: On the whole, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a nice watch with electrifying chemistry between the lead actors, amazing comic situations and drama and emotions being captured beautifully. It would be loved by the Gen Next (Young Generation) as well as the kids and classy people!!

The Villain (2014)
9/10
Mohit Suri does yet again after Aashiqui 2!
27 June 2014
I had tremendous expectations from "Ek Villain" for numerous reasons- 1. Mohit Suri as the Director of the film (I loved his previous outing "Aashiqui 2" (2013)), 2. The brilliant music by Mithoon & Ankit Tiwari (again from "Aashiqui 2"), 3. And the cast- Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor & Ritesh Deshmukh! But just to make one thing clarify: Don't compare "EK VILLAIN" with "AASHIQUI 2" because both the films have different stories, different themes and different outlines! So here we go:

Story: I wouldn't dare to tell the story as it would tamper your expectations for the film. But I can assure you that you would not get disappointed! But overall, it's all about a Villain who falls in love even though he has no affection but cannot escape from the feeling of love! But what fate has in store for him covers the rest of the movie!

Cast: Sidharth Malhotra: If you loved him in "Student Of The Year" (2012) and "Hasee Toh Phasee" (2014), you are in a treat to watch him in "Ek Villain". The maturity and intensity he gives in his character would change his image for those people who think he is "the boy next door" or has a "chocolate boy" image. He has the potential to become a superstar one day and he has shown that he can give any performance with remarkable ease!

Shraddha Kapoor: She is in top form yet again! If you loved her in "Aashiqui 2", you will surely love her in "Ek Villain". She is a fun-loving, bubbly and a vivacious girl!

Ritesh Deshmukh: If you think his comic-timing is brilliant in all his movies, then you wouldn't want to miss his performance in "Ek Villain". He is a revelation! As the antagonist, he truly charms in your eyes. What a supremely talented actor!

Direction: Mohit Suri has given a wonderful direction! It would be wrong to compare "Aashiqui 2" and "Ek Villain" as both are fantastic in their own ways! The screenplay is truly absorbing! It keeps you intrigued and you can never take your eyes off!

Music: Mithoon & Ankit Tiwari are back yet again with a fantabulous music! "Galliyan" is soulful and is in the top songs of chartbusters list. "Banjaare Ko Ghar" is melodious. "Zaroorat" is captivating. "Humdard" is wonderful. On the whole, the music of "Ek Villain" is in top form and in sync with the film!

Overall Verdict: "Ek Villain" is one of those rare romantic films that has came in a long time! The direction, performances and the music is truly absorbing with great action and a delightful romance! Rating:****

Bewakoofiyaan (2014)
8/10
A decent film!
16 June 2014
BEWAKOOFIYAAN brings back memories of Anubhav Sinha's AAPKO PEHLE BHI KAHIN DEKHA HAI and Rahul Dholakia's KEHTAA HAI DIL BAAR BAAR, besides FATHER OF THE BRIDE and MEET THE PARENTS. It won't be erroneous to state that BEWAKOOFIYAAN makes a genuine attempt to entertain beyond tested flavours and it succeeds in evoking genuine laughs at regular intervals. On the whole, BEWAKOOFIYAAN springs a pleasant surprise. Watch this wonderful slice of life film for the super performances of Rishi, Ayushmann and Sonam, watertight writing, skilled direction and dollops of humor. Bewakoofiyaan is a genteel, slice-of-life love story that runs with one of the oldest of the standard devices of the genre – strong parental opposition to a proposed marital liaison, with money, or rather the lack of it, playing a big part. But the film does not turn either overly nonsensical or sickly sweet in an ill-advised pursuit of comic effect and cutesy twists. The drama is easy flowing and the romantic track believable. Bewakoofiyaan scores with its disarming simplicity. Even as it doesn't soar to dizzying heights, it is never less than watchable.

Gulaab Gang (2014)

Watch it for the superior women empowerment it covers and terrific performances by Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla!
12 June 2014
Although GULAAB GANG raises a strong voice against years of patriarchal pain and suffering -- one might assume it tilts towards art-house cinema -- the fact of the matter is, Soumik presents the classic conflict between good and evil like any other masala film, replete with high-voltage drama, song-and-dance routine and of course, action sequences. On the whole, GULAAB GANG is well-intentioned with several powerful moments, especially towards the second half. The game of power and politics is well captured too. Additionally, the bravura performances of Madhuri and Juhi add immense weightage to the film. Watch it! It should deserve a National or Jury Awards next year!

Wonderful film for married couples!
11 June 2014
Yet the film's consistently crackling dialogue and terrific performances from its leads makes it enjoyable despite its obvious bumps. But Shaadi Ke Side Effects belongs to Farhan, who reveals incredible comic timing as he slips into the role of the self-obsessed man-child struggling to cope with change. Steering clear of melodrama even when the script falls prey to it, Farhan plays it effortlessly cool. The film then is easy and breezy, although too long at nearly two-and-a-half hours. I'm going with three out of five for Shaadi Ke Side Effects. Predictable and occasionally misguided, but also hopelessly fun. SHAADI KE SIDE/EFFECTS is more about rediscovering your partner, post marriage. The fact that Saket borrows from real-life instances makes it relatable and identifiable. The connect is tremendous, with the spectator often drawing parallels with his/her life. On the whole, SHAADI KE SIDE/EFFECTS is a delicious take on contemporary relationships. This one's relatable, heart-warming, amusing and thoroughly enjoyable!

Dedh Ishqiya (2014)
10/10
Even better than Ishqiya!
11 June 2014
The film's crackling humor, set to Bhardwaj's terrific dialogues, is its biggest strength. From laugh-out-loud punch-lines to cheeky repartee, Dedh Ishqiya has some of the most inspired writing you've seen on screen recently. Dedh Ishqiya gives the UP badlands a light cloak of humor and, to the viewer – we're happy to note – a bold reveal that is more suggested than emphasized. I'm going with four out of five for director Abhishek Chaubey's Dedh Ishqiya. Like heady wine, it delivers a welcome kick. While ISHQIYA was earthy and rustic, one gets to witness an alternate universe in DEDH ISHQIYA. There are layers to the story that baffle you. This time, it's even more dicey and perilous. On the whole, DEDH ISHQIYA is a worthy follow up to the widely admired ISHQIYA. Powerful writing, superb direction and outstanding performances make DEDH ISHQIYA a must watch. Just don't miss it!

Holiday (2014)
9/10
A slick thriller that will keep you engaged and enthralled!
11 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY comes across as an exception because the smartly-packaged fare never loses focus from its core issue with the post-interval portions diversifying into race-against-time thriller mode. Also, Murugadoss employs the right tricks to woo the entertainment-seeking spectator. On the whole, HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY is a slick action-thriller that keeps you engrossed, enthralled and captivated all through, thanks to its fascinating premise and a watertight, razor-sharp screenplay. Go for it! Murgadoss' film (remake of the Tamil 'Thupakki') offers an intelligent plot, with blows, blasts and raw bone-cracking action (Greg Powell- of 'Skyfall' fame). It triggers a fear that anyone from your paanwala to pizza-delivery boy could be a 'closet' terrorist (Beware!). While the core plot is compelling and finely directed, the side-tracks - like bombs needing to be deactivated and the romantic angle, waste screen-time and the songs infiltrate the plot too often. The film is too long and needs a taut edit. It has flaws too, but doesn't fail to entertain.

The Lunchbox (2013)
10/10
One of the best films I've ever seen after a really long time but hugely disappointed that this film was not selected for Best Foreign Film in Oscars!
29 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going with five out of five for 'The Lunchbox'. The greatest love stories are the ones that make you root for the protagonists to come together, despite their destinies. This film illustrates how love transforms the unlikeliest of people; it breaks down Saajan's walls and gives Ila the courage to fly. Treat yourself to 'The Lunchbox' - it'll leave you with a craving to seek your own little happiness. The best film I've seen in a long time. A well-told old-fashioned romance, THE LUNCHBOX gracefully unknots the trials, tribulations, fears and hopes of everyday people sans the claimer that the city of Mumbai has become synonymous with. On the whole, THE LUNCHBOX is a standout film, a sumptuous treat that's sure to be relished by connoisseurs of cinema. A film with a big heart, it makes you realize that you can unearth contentment and pleasure even if you board the wrong train. Easily one of the finest films to come out of India.

Kochadaiiyaan (2014)
8/10
Nice movie but could have been better!
27 May 2014
KOCHADAIIYAAN is saddled with the usual good versus bad saga (the son of an honest senapati seeks revenge for the wrongs done to his father). Having said that, I wish to add that the screenplay is truly absorbing for most parts, except when the songs show up. On the whole, the absorbing screenplay and the technology makes KOCHADAIIYAAN an interesting fare. For the legion of Rajinikanth fans, this film is definitely worth a watch. Kochadiiyaan succeeds not because of technology but because of the writing. The film is motion capture 3D computer-animated but the animation is primeval; both the motion capture and the texture of the visuals are closer to The Polar Express than Avatar or Tintin. Like any other Rajini movie, Kochadaiiyaan too worships its star. His character appears in almost every scene and there are fan-pleasing moments in the form of stylistic gestures and dialogues.

Total Chaos (2014)

Disappointing!
25 May 2014
Despite the giddy pace, it soon becomes clear that there's not enough of a story here, merely a string of gags. The thin plot is stretched out until it collapses under the weight of its contrivances, squandering a good cast, particularly Kirron Kher as the shrill Mummyji. Such a shame that the film's central conflict evaporates conveniently and unconvincingly in a hurried, all-too-neat finale. Funny, but in a pedestrian sort of way. While the promos of the film prepare you for a laugh-riot, what unfurls on screen doesn't keep you in splits through and through. Initially, yes, the humor works, especially when Ali meets his prospective mother-in-law Kirron Kher, but thereafter, a few sporadic instances apart, several episodes fall flat. On the whole, TOTAL SIYAPAA appeals in bits and spurts. You expect a laugh-riot, but what comes across on screen is half-baked.

Gunday (2014)
9/10
Treat for masala-lovers!
25 May 2014
First things first! GUNDAY is smartly penned, lavishly mounted and sharply edited… and it carpet bombs the spectators with every trick in the book. The bromance, the romance, the gunday versus cop clash, the burst of colors, the unpredictable screen writing coupled with smart lines, the spray of bullets… the director, who has also penned the film, makes sure he leaves his stamp all over the film. On the whole, GUNDAY has a credible story to tell, is packed with unexpected twists that keep you on the edge and offers entertainment in large doses! Gunday's heart is in the right place but the plot gets overwhelmed by its own voluptuousness, its slick torsos and slow-motion slaps, its extended Durga Puja which leaves it lost between Calcutta's cabarets and Dhanbad's dark mines. However, Gunday's fun while it lasts. More depth, more fire would've sharpened this film. But Gunday offers glitter coating a grim tale.

Nice sequel!
25 May 2014
What sets Marc Webb's iteration of the web-slinger's story apart from Spider-Man's previous cinematic outings (and indeed, other superhero films) is that along with its share of action, epic fights and special effects, there is a vibrant, emotional core at the heart of this movie. The action sequences are breathtaking and despite the running time, the film doesn't drag. Garfield and Stone, in the scenes where they are together, have a palpable chemistry. This Spider-Man serves up both pathos and power. The performances, story-line and pacing of the film are great, but what really sets it apart is the direction, choreography of the action sequences and the next level visual effects. The film is a well written, true to the comics, adaptation of one of one of Marvel's on the ground soldiers. Fans of the first movie, and superhero movies in general should definitely go for this one. PS: There's an "X-Men: Days of Future Past" scene at the end of the movie you wouldn't want to miss.

Imtiaz Ali excels once again!
3 May 2014
After giving some sweet and entertaining films like Jab We Met (2007) , Love Aaj Kal (2009), Rockstar (2011), Imtiaz Ali delivers an coming-of age film: Highway! Let me tell you that it is not an entertaining movie but a breath-taking movie with most of the beautiful locations that are the amazing viewpoints of this film with some remarkable performances and a beautiful narrated film which doesn't wastes your time but makes you feel travel along with it! What a charming film in the recent years!

Story: A rich girl is being kidnapped by some contract criminals or dacoits which travel from one place to another! In the meantime, the girl realizes that being kidnapped, she has never lived her life so freely and explored many situations from time to time which makes her salivating for more! She develops a strange bond with her kidnapper that she doesn't want to reach wherever the kidnapper is taking her or doesn't want to stop but wants that the path which she travels doesn't end. This is one of the rarest story in films we ever have seen which doesn;t need any humor, any fast-paced situations, any unusual elements which are present in most of the films! It looks more like a real-life story which is captured very beautifully and anonymously!

Cast: Alia Bhatt is extraordinary! After Student Of The Year (2012), she truly explores us the new dimensions of the film! Her performance is worth to praise for and one of the best till date! She is the main soul of this film which lives to the fullest doesn't end but lasts forever!

Randeep Hooda is remarkable! He truly excels as a dacoit and is remarkable in his Haryanvi accent. He is no less than the other contemporary actors and holds the gripping nature of the film with efficiency! What a fabulous actor!

Direction: Imtiaz Ali has truly emerged as one of the biggest filmmakers who can tell any story with eye with exotic locations and captures beautifully every single element of the film! He is a remarkable director who doesn't need any big-budget production, robusting visual effects or any larger-than-life characters but can make any story magnificent and visually delightful! One of his best works!

Music: The music is also another soul factor of this film!! It can be heard many times and every song in this film is soulful which captures our minds and takes us to another level!

On the whole, HIGHWAY is an coming-of-age films which has a terrific stat cast, beautiful locations, intriguing story and a delightful music! It is strongly recommended to all age-groups!

A true adaptation to the novel and a brilliant edition in today's mainstream cinema!
26 April 2014
We all are quite familiar with movies which are based on novels, real- life stories, autobiographies etc. but few films exist which strikes the right chord! Many movies (in Bollywood) like 3 Idiots (2009), Kai Po Che (2013) have been adapted from novels of one masterpiece: Chetan Bhagat! He is the main reason behind the success of these movies and many others and again for the latest release of his novel "2 States" adaptation in Bollywood!! This movie is so wonderful and doesn't require any action scenes, over-the-top dialogues, old-typical themes etc. but the makers have given a remarkable effort with some minor changes as compared to the book!! So here we go:

Story: The story is beautifully crafted!! 2 people of different culture, different states fall in love with each other. But whether they know the consequences they would face when they would face the discomfort and the pressures when people talk of inter-caste liaison, the unyielding love and the resolve to win the parents' trust, each and every aspect with the emotions included! Will they succeed in convincing their parents to get married or will their relationship would get over is the main plot of this film.

Cast: Arjun Kapoor as Krish Malhotra is delightful!! After films like Ishaqzaade (2012) and Gunday (2014) where he has a goofy character, he truly succeeds in playing a sweet, simple kind of a guy who gives importance to his relationships! He charms and gives a meticulous performance! One of his finest performance till date!

Alia Bhatt as Ananya Subramanium is first-rate!! She is beautiful yet witty and gives a delightful performance as a Tamil-Brahmin girl!! Her chemistry with Arjun is electrifying! We can say that Alia has now became an evolved actress and she knows when to capture emotions at the right time!!

Amrita Singh as Krish's Mother is a revelation! She truly is fantastic as the typical Punjabi mother-in-law who justifies her role!! She steals the show in most of the scenes!!

Ronit Roy as Krish's Father is extraordinary!! He develops an antagonistic relationship with his son but he is remarkable!! Watch out for the twist that he would get in the 2nd half!

Shiv Subramanium and Revathy as Ananya's Father and Mother gives decent performances!! They are quite efficient!!

Direction: Director Abhishek Varman should deserve the Best Debut Director in next year's film awards! He truly strikes the right chord!! He gives an remarkable effort but capturing sweet melodramatic scenes and wonderful emotions which come during the course of the film!! Both he and Karan Johar (Producer) have wonderfully executed a delightful film!!

Music: The music of the film is exceedingly well!! The songs truly move you and will put a smile in your face!! Songs like "Locha-e-Ulfat" and "Offo" are best numbers which will make you groove along with it! "Mann Mast Magan" is a wonderful and top-notch song that steals your heart!!

On the whole, 2 States is one of those rare Hindi films which have came in a long time and had explored us the diverse cultures, melodramatic scenes, problems of inter-caste marriages but one thing knocks all of it: "Love"! It really empowers on all of the dizzy situations!! Strongly recommended to people of all age-groups and also to those who fantasize about diverse people!!

A wonderful addition in the Marvel franchise!!!
8 April 2014
Hats off to Marvel Studios!!! They are brilliant in comics as well as in making movies based on the former. I want to say that after watching Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and The Avengers (2012), Captain America was not my favourite or he was my least favourite superhero from all the rest! I had not many expectations from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I just expected a good story that would take Captain America's journey forward. But when I watched it, it left me awestruck! I was so surprised that how marvelously this film is executed! With so many elements that I couldn't have asked for more.

Story: The story is riveting with twists and turns although I must admit that it is better than its predecessor! It has many scenes and moments from which you just can't take your eyes off, even for a moment! For more to know, just go to watch this film! LOL!

Characters: Chris Evans as Steve Rogers is back and yet with a bang!!! Still struggling to cope with the modern world, he's a man who is a Saviour and delivers a bucketful performance as Captain America!

Scarlett Johansson is charming yet more beautiful! You can't miss her daring action sequences which is appreciable!

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury delivers more to his audience with a extravaganza performance as compared to The Avengers! He gives a surprise which you would see in the climax.

Another character I would like to appreciate is Alexander Pierce. He truly justifies his role but you can't determine whether he is a good or bad guy in this film but you would know in the end.

Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter is delightful. I didn't knew she was alive but given her minimum role, she is decent!

The most magnificent villain in Marvel for me after Loki is The Winter Soldier. He is just riveting! I can't tell you who he is in actual! Yet another surprise which you would find out in the film!

Direction: Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo deserve a round of applause for making and continuing a franchise with so much elements! They are simply fabulous!!

Action and Visual Effects: I would like to say that the action and VFX are far more better than the predecessor!! The 3D effects also adds a little touch!! Every action scene is breathtaking!!

On the whole, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is yet another magnificent film and a wonderful addition in the Marvel franchise!! Captain America has evolved so much that for me, he is at par with Iron Man. A remarkable effort by the whole cast and crew!!

A quirky romantic tale!
21 March 2014
HASEE TOH PHASEE dares to be distinctive. This one's *not* merely about opposites falling in love. This one's a quirky love tale involving two individuals, shades different from the mundane stuff on matters of heart. On the whole, it is a bright-and-breezy, charming and refreshing rom-com that makes you smile, laugh and gets you moist-eyed at regular intervals. A qualitative film that warms the cockles of your heart. It is for the romantics who like their martinis stirred not shaken. This romantic comedy mirrors the quirks in human nature subtly and provides humour in everyday situations; in the family and amongst friends..If you're looking to rediscover the magic of goofy love around Valentines, give Hasee Toh Phasee a shot. Note: You may not like this film if you are a die-hard romantic who only subscribes to Bollywood formula.

Queen (2013)
10/10
Delightful film!
19 March 2014
QUEEN is about a shy and timid girl who travels to Paris and Amsterdam for her honeymoon all alone, when her beau calls off the wedding at the last minute. A quirky concept, yes. But this coming of age story is indeed enjoyable, despite the hiccups. On the whole, QUEEN reinvents the genre with its non-formulaic screenplay and skilled direction. A charming little film, this one's made with heart and feeling and it shows. Absolutely recommended! Ultimately, it's Kangana Ranaut who makes you root for Rani from the word go. The best way to describe her fabulous performance is by confessing that I forgot I was watching Kangana. It's a raw, nuanced, delicately comical performance, and Bahl rightfully builds his film around his fearless, quirky heroine.I'm going with full ten stars for Queen. It's an extraordinary journey with a Rani who will stay in your heart.
