Pig Pen (2015)
Dark and depressing tale
This movie is one dark and depressing story about a young boy and his mother and her violent boyfriend and what happens to them all over the course of a few days.
A lot of the story is told in flashbacks; that illuminate the decisions that the boy and his mother make to try and survive in a cruel world.
The story is actually very well acted and well told; but anyone looking for an uplifting story better look elsewhere.
A solid 5 out of 10 for the quality of the story.
The Man in the Silo (2016)
Enigmatic; strange and confusing story of a man losing his mind
A very enigmatic and strange story of a man losing his mind after the loss of close family members. Ernie Hudson does a fine job of portraying this character - but the movie is way too confusing to make it very enjoyable - at least to this reviewer. 5 out of 10 may be a bit generous; but I enjoyed Ernie Hudson's performance.
Theresa Is a Mother (2012)
Funny and heartfelt look at the trials and tribulations of a single Mom
TIAM is a frequently very funny and always heartfelt look at the problems encountered by a single Mom who is forced to move from the big city back into her parents home in small town America.
With her 3 young daughters (played by the actresses real life daughters) in tow and no prospects for any work (aside from her poor attempts to succeed as a singer/songwriter) she much navigate the difficulties of living with here quirky parents and finding a meaningful job in a very small town.
All of the actors did a fine job - in particular C. Fraser Press in the lead role and her 3 very talented daughters.
Recommended to all lovers of realistic family humor and quirky family dynamics.
The Sheik (2014)
The Sheik Rocks!
I had heard of this documentary from a friend; and went into it hoping for an interesting story - and got that and more.
The story of the Iron Sheik (the iconic wrestling name Khosrow Vaziri took as his stage name) takes us all the way from his birth in Iran in the early 1940's right up to the present day.
And what a story it is! In his lifetime Mr. Vaziri was a various times a multiple times amateur wrestling champion of Iran; a personal bodyguard for the then Shah of Iran; a coach for a U.S.Olympic Gold winning wrestling team; a world reviled villain in the WWE who also at one time was the World Champion of the WWE; a devastated and hopelessly drug addicted man who lost his loving wife and two beautiful daughters; and finally a risen up again loving husband and father (and grandfather) who became an U-Tube and Twitter sensation.
And those are just the highlights of this fascinating man's long and winding journey. This documentary does a fine job of presenting Mr. Vaziri's story through not only his own inimitable words; but through the words of many, many of his contemporaries from both the amateur and professional wrestling worlds which were such a huge part of his life; along with many well chosen news clips and pictures showing his strange odyssey.
I can highly recommend that you see 'The Sheik'
