Scavengers Reign (2023)
Very good sci fi planet survival!!! With some flws
The animation is superb, the planet and technology fantastic, the story captivating, and the characters interesting enough to care about.
I do have a couple of gripes though.
An escape pod with no weapons like guns? Flare guns? Distress beacons? Bush pilot and military pilot survival kits have pistols. If those numerous escape pods had some sort of weapons like pistols than the story probably would have definite plot changes.
No escape pod to pod comms? Even the life escape pods from drilling rigs have comms. You are telling me that all those escape pods that dropped on the planet with this futuristic tech had no comms for each pod to communicate with other pods or the main ship? (Sam and Azi had comms, but not in the pods and they didn't answer each others calls or know about each other? Weird). Sure they might have got broken in the crash, but if the pods were designed for crash landings then the comms would have been protected.
I look forward to a hopeful next season in a couple of years.
The Scalphunters (1968)
Enjoyable adventure with some messages
I enjoyed this movie with some fine actors and great scenery. About a trapper in 1860 swindled out of his furs by a local group of natives who trade a captured black slave. The interplay between Burt Lancaster's trapper and. Ossie Davis' charismatic slave is fun to watch. Telly Savalas and Shelley Winters are also great and the leads are hugely talented. The plot rolls along evenly keeping the audience entertained. As a bit of a history buff I was a little annoyed at the post Civil War weapons used for a date of 1860, but is pretty common in many westerns. I was also a little concerned about wanton killing, but again, not out of place in this era of westerns. Burt Lancaster's character has a moral high ground about the scalping but is indifferent about what to do with his newly acquired slave. However, this is a buddy movie between 2 people of opposite backgrounds with a bit of a comical flair and it works well!
Love, Death & Robots: Three Robots: Exit Strategies (2022)
Animation was great, but message too preachy
While I enjoyed the animation which was superb, I felt the message about negligent humanity was just a little too preachy for my taste. I did like the ending. I certainly believe humankind needs to do more for environmental stewardship, but this short was just repeating the message over and over again, I mean I get it.
Rawhide: Incident Near the Promised Land (1961)
Good episode about bitterness and loss
The drovers reach Sedalia to sell the cattle, but the town is in the midst of a nation wide financial panic. Mr. Favor tries to buy grazing for the cattle, but meets a bitter widow. An interesting episode about a nation wide financial panic and some fun with Wishbone pretending to be an investor. I thought it was an interesting show about arriving at the famous town of Sedalia, though other than signs it looked like an typical stock western town. Rowdy is wounded and cared for by the widow and we found out her bitter story and a little more about Rowdy. Decent episode.
Rawhide: Incident of the Buffalo Soldier (1961)
Superb episode with historical context of the Buffalo Soldiers
This episode portrayed a tortured soul and member of the Buffalo Soldiers who were a mostly black racial unit and famous for their exploits in the western expansion. I thought it was written such that we got a view into the mind of one such soldier with a checkered past struggling to come to terms with trust. The backdrop of the fort and cavalry movements were plausible and added to the experience and historical context. Great episode! Highly recommended!
Rawhide: Incident at Rojo Canyon (1960)
Great Episode with echos of the Civil War!
This was a great episode for fans of the Civil War! An isolated Confederate Army unit is hold up in a canyon cut off from the war unknowing that the war is over. A beautiful singer (Julie London) is also along with a beautiful voice! Gil Favor takes an interest in her and we find out he has 2 daughters in Philadelphia he hasn't seen since the war. The drovers meet up with a green Federal Cavalry troop investigating raider activity not knowing it is a Confederate Army unit. I thought it was pretty cool that a lot of the drovers had been war veterans and were concerned for the green Federal Cavalry. This was a great episode with a lot of elements for fans of war shows.
Rawhide: Incident of the Silent Web (1960)
Tragic well written tale
Well written tale about loss and compassion from the drovers. The young actress performed well and Sheb Wooley sings with an amazing voice! Really enjoyed this episode!
Something Real and Good (2013)
Enjoyable and Memorable
I really enjoyed this movie about two direction less people who find direction in each other. As the movie develops we begin to care for these two nameless people as they struggle to define each other. It's a fun film for a rainy day if you like some quiet reflection and thoughtfulness.
Of course, Alex Hannant, is a very pretty woman to watch and her character is intrigued by quirky unassuming Matt Jones. They playfully provoke each other, testing each other's limits, and discovering their own selves.
There is no sex, drugs, or violence, just a lot of poignant provocation.
I had a god time watching it.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A superb experience
I just came back from watching this to a packed theater on a Monday afternoon. I am also a long time fan, having watched every single Star Trek episode (that's all of them, TOS, TNG, Enterprise, DS9, Voyageur) and all the movies as well as many novels. I found this movie better than the first one in 2009. It was funny, fast paced, and well written. Every member of the original crew got a decent amount of air time. My favorite was always Scotty, who at a young age provided a superior example of an engineer to me. In the movie he is allowed to develop much more than the first, finding plenty of action in a pivotal role.
Much has already been said in the reviews here, but I wanted to add my own, that as a fan I am excited with where the franchise is headed under the direction of J. J. Abrams.
For the people that gave this movie a poor review, I have no idea what planet you are from, and for those that claim to be fans, I seriously doubt it. I have many friends that are fans as I am, professionals of many disciplines, and they all loved it.
This is a very good movie. If you haven't seen it and are worried about critics, don't be. Go see it and be rewarded.
