Dark Matter (2024)
This is a bad show.
It's a bad show because it could've been a very good show and instead, it's mediocre.
This is a science fiction show where the science is definitely more fiction than it is science. The science is nonsense. Actually it's magic and not really science. Let's just say that if this type of "science" had been in Game of Thrones it would've been being done by a warlock. And I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but the actors, because they're good actors, are trying to save badly written dialogue.
The protagonist(s) is a genius who makes really, really bad decisions. If he had only he had given it a little more thought...
And the feel, vibe, look of the show? A highly stylized cheese fest. Looks like a world that only people in cool movies live in.
Foundation: A Glimpse of Darkness (2023)
I heard Apple gave the show runner notes...
... and apparently one of them said "Make it more like Star Wars". This was not a good note.
From pointless action sequences to over the top villains, this episode embodies the slippage from the serious science fiction of the First Season to goofy sci-fi tropes in the Second.
There's magic in the air in the form of telepathy, visions and projecting oneself into the future (taken straight from Yoda's Mentoring Luke to do list), as well as religious magicians who do their missionary work in Tucson, apparently. By the end I was waiting for the Ewoks or Boba Fett to show up.
The unintentional funniest moment of the episode? When the Warden makes this ridiculously bombastic speech at the base of the Vault and then bursts into flames. Hilarious. Oh, and here's the major spoiler of the episode- the Foundation's second crisis? It's this season.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
The Episode that makes a Great Series even Greater
One of TV's greatest standalone episodes of all time- weird, poignant, surreal, beautiful, dangerous. 10 minutes in I knew there would be heavy backlash to the episode. It's become obvious, of late, that fanboy-ism has permeated the shows viewing culture (btw, just because you love a thing, doesn't mean you own the thing and get to dictate it's trajectory).
Those of you who think you've had a Ted Lasso episode stolen from you by this episode existing in the series, you couldn't be more wrong. The reason why Season 2 is 12 episodes long instead of 10 is to accommodate the two standalone episodes that the creators wanted to make. This one and the instant classic that is the Christmas episode. You're still going to get the same amount of Ted Lasso that you think you're owed (as if this show owes you a thing). I hope the creators see fit to make a few more episodes like Beard After Hours. And to those of you who swore you would never watch again if they did, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
CBGB (2013)
It could've been good... But it decided to be awful
Rickman rules. Because he's Alan Rickman. Other than to watch a great actor work his craft there's nothing worth seeing here. Low energy, unexciting and a poorly written work. Everything that punk isn't.
Special shout out to the scriptwriters - do you know how many kids in the early 70s used the words "dude" and "newbie"? Hint- none.
