Olympic Dreams (2019)
A hidden gem?
Or a rusty nail..it's all relative and relevant and real like this movie.
There were moments I wasn't sure I was watching a movie.
It's not a blockbuster with murder and mystery and mega actors and that's the best part.
It's also not boring, unless you are entertained by the simplistic predictable nature of a..blockbuster with mega actors solving the mystery of a murder or the end of the world..*snooze...
I hope to see more from the two leads and from the writer/director of this truly original little film. All the actors were so genuine. Not too trendy and not too cool, but better than those.
The title and premise with the Olympics might sideline your curiosity (and maybe peak it) and you get a but of that too.
Embrace your curiosity and enjoy yourself.
The Woman King (2022)
Kings and consequences
Is everything based on a truth now, or do we just want to make believe it to be.
Well, what if.
The story was fine, and perhaps predictable and potentially inspiring if it's your sort of thing.
With the era of a woman's revenge films to follow along with.
Warning you may need to fit the part.
Herein lies another throne we needn't envy.
But perhaps films are made to peak curiosity and to present an opportunity to learn something regarding a truth.
We are our own best critics after all. Even if we have no clue what we are doing.
There is much pride here, even with much failure. But luckily the color and tone will entice you.
Halloween Ends (2022)
It was never about Halloween.
Well, so long.
What more could they do with this story really. There's just the need to know the end.
And to think Jamie Lee Curtis made a career out of this.
When it comes to scary movies, I think it's best to stick with the classics - the originals.
I did like the first, and maybe second films.
But by the 12th, the antagonist is hardly the instigator anymore and hardly scary.
Most of today's generation has no idea who Michael Meyers even is, or why they should fear him, and certainly under no circumstances regarding Halloween.
And so what more can I say. I don't make films. And wouldn't have made this one either.
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Please someone explain to me the point of such nonsense.
How has Cronenberg succeeded at making films and getting such well known actors to act in these continually terrible silly stories.
It's not even good sci fi, which seems to be what he is aiming for? I don't know.
I do know that Cronenberg continually gets some of the worst performances out of good actors as well.
His style is cheap and corny and weak.
Poor and tasteless.
Only reason I watched this was for Viggo and Kristen. Why ...how much did he have to pay them I wonder.
I can picture Cronenberg being some creepy old pervert.
And this will be the last film of his I ever try to watch.
1883 (2021)
What they went through.
Likely our earlier generations and those that found new land went through hell to get there, luckily they didn't have social media to instigate the rants though.
They just lived hard.
As this tells the before of the now popular clan on Yellowstone, the Duttons.
With a touch of cinematic glamor, oh that glowing skin and teeth, it seemed a bit unbelievable..hard to grasp at times, though this is fiction and not a reality show. So..it was fine.
I just wish there had been more character building of other family members.
I found it rather tough at times to watch. With the show being focused on it seemed one character mostly, along with her narrative poetic prose. It was sweet and all.
Along with the endless troubles they encountered around every corner, it could feel a bit..doomed.
And with most series, they slowly stretch them out from episode to episode and then always seem to so briskly rap it all together in the last (and final, in this case) episode/season.
Left to the imagination we'll say. Life goes on.
But, perhaps this is the best way to express, what they went through.
Gwledd (2021)
Gratuitous Gore..blech
I suppose this is what some want in "horror".
A bit tasteless if you ask me.
I feel it started the film started out well played, intense and provoking. But just ended cheesy, and leaving me queasy.
The lead female part Cadi, introduced with a mysterious intensity, certainly was frighteningly annoying. Nearly lost me there. But I stuck around to the end.
If title of this review entices you, dig in.
Mary Shelley (2017)
She doesn't have to smile.
What a brilliant adaptation of a artist and her muse..herself.
A love story. A tragedy. A story of becoming and remaining true to oneself, and the beauty that brings forth.
Elle Fanning finally comes of age and shines in her role as Mary Wollstonecraft-Goodwin (Shelley).
Supporting cast make for a well read tale.
I appreciate a movie that captivates me through visual pleasures to delve deeper into it's history and the origins of its stories and characters.
Well done.
C'mon C'mon (2021)
Get over it,
..and get over yourselves.
Why is it that kids today are meant to be applauded for these upbringings that perceive them as being more enlightened and uplifted. As they get depicted as equals to their parents or even more so, their parent's therapists. Cause we all have generational trauma and need to talk about it for hours. "eye roll"
Kids need to be kids, play ball, run around, and not have an opinion on the meaning of life ..at 10 years old, or even up to like the age of 30.
This was pretty pretentious. Not necessarily boring, but just too ..long winded.
I was eager to see this but disappointed. I wonder if Mike Mills is a bit ..dated in his progressive "hipster"style.
Joaquin is a good actor. But he is getting older and is know a parent, so we may start seeOmg him in these "cute" and "heart warming" roles. It happens to many, I fear.
Check it out though. Make your own opinion.
And just ..get over it.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Enough? They're just not killing it anymore.
Some movie characters just need to be buried, to be left in the height of their glory.
In this case I just feel like the saga has grown soggy and the gore doesn't make up for the lack of scare. I don't flinch much, but if I did, I didn't feel that intensity in this sequel ..to the sequel ..of the sequel.
I found myself thinking, why don't they just chop off his head!? But then maybe that defeats the purpose of a scary movie.
That's part of the thrill! He just ..can't ..be ..killed.
I'm a fan of Halloween both on screen and off. And I'm sure I'll be watching for what happens next, eye roll or not.
Spencer (2021)
You can feel it...
..the anguish of a life lived through the lens of others. And so eloquently and elegantly portrayed. It's heartbreakingly beautiful to follow along with but you embrace it to await some sort of release. We can't ever really know her. Either, her. Both icon and actress. But you can really feel her here.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Stark contrast...will leave you howling
Perhaps sometimes there is too much left unsaid. The movie was engaging but missed, I feel, connecting the audience to the characters. The movie does take place in a time few of us watching can remember or connect with, but if only through using our imagination. So perhaps it's best to use a little imagination here. Best to leave some things unsaid. And maybe these films aren't meant to just leave us once we get up out of our seats.
Val (2021)
What a sincere portrayal from one of the greatest modern actors.
We get to delve into the world of life before and after for this brilliant actor. Filled with home movies of past moments mixed in with recent events, this is a unique experience to be shared.
Continued success to this true artist.
Must see.
The Father (2020)
Where is the entertainment in story's like this...
I understand that film expresses many experiences and tells many stories, some fact and some fiction.
This is a story of fiction. But don't be fooled because it is very possible and very real.
I wonder how films like this can be viewed with much of any pleasure or ...entertainment.
Cause after all what is film of not to tell a story to amuse or intrigue. And well there can be expressions of violence and gore in some film, at least that expression is perhaps more blatant.
As I found this film to be disturbing and sad.
You are pulled into the main character, Anthony's life as he loses his mind to dementia. In a setting that ultimately becomes a world that has no time for such insanity. Where people get taken somewhere, and put away, to let someone else deal with them.
That reality is very real. And more horrific than any gory horror film.
Anthony Hopkins who plays the character of Anthony, is a great actor, but he could likely be just playing himself, as he has reached an age when losing parts of ourselves is the reality. And so I don't see it as an award worthy performance. But who am I to say and well I'm certainly not involved in all the politics that go into those ceremonies.
Watch it, if you're curious. Most will probably feel some sort of complaisant agreeability with the story. Empathize. And you only have to seen the news or followed along any social media outlet to see that people revel in the discomfort of others.
Makes you wonder.
