Million Dollar Decorators (2011)
Tacky
This show is gross. With the exception of one, all of the designers behavior is just nauseating. Not much focus at all on design, but instead mostly name dropping, bragging on themselves and discussing how big their clients budgets are. It must be fake because if a client is paying $1M plus for these services, the decorator shows up to a job 90 minutes late, then offers no explanation as to why and acts dismissive toward the client when they express frustration over it, I cannot imagine that would fly with these "high profile" people. One designer also constantly mentions being skinny and wanting a case of "light anorexia" which is in extremely poor taste. Lastly, the episode featuring Joe Francis and the way he speaks to his staff was terrible - what a disgusting human being.
Normal People (2020)
"It's not like this with other people"
This show is everything. For anyone who's experienced a powerful and confusing young love like this, it will stir so much in you. Yes there's a lot of sexuality and admittedly a few scenes may feel gratuitous, but most are beautiful and realistic and a true representation of what a passionate young relationship like this is like. I noticed several reviewers saying "they just need to communicate better!" Yeah obviously. But in real life things like pride and fear get in the way. The characters have also had vastly different life experiences and while both are quite mature for their age, they are still very young adults who may excel academically, but whose emotional intelligence and communication skills aren't quite fully developed yet. I do agree with others though that I would've liked to learn more about Marianne's family issues that have clearly shaped her insecurities about feeling worthy of love.
Cruel Summer (2021)
Watch Season 1, then just stop.
It is hard to pick a rating for this because Season 1 deserves 9 stars, but season 2 is barely 4 stars. When I found out S2 was not a continuation, but a new plot with all new cast, I was equally excited hoping it would be as good as S1. It doesn't even come close. I don't understand how this show went from being as good as it was in S1 to this junk in S2. I've watched all 8 available episodes of S2 so far and honestly don't know why I'm still watching. I think there is only one episode left and no matter what happens it can't make up for how bad the other episodes have been. TLDR: Season 1 is amazing, Season 2 is trash.
From Scratch (2022)
Forced and drawn out 2/10
I really wanted to like this. Admittedly romantic dramas are not usually my thing but being based on a true story I hoped would actually make it more heartfelt. The (real life) age difference between the leads didn't bother me at all as it apparently did for many reviewers. It just seemed very forced to me, with a lot of drawn out scenes making it feel as if I kept watching the same thing over and over again. Also, did Amy & Lino really do the up against a wall, hands over their heads, picking up and/or twirling around thing EVERY time they kissed?? It goes from sexy to annoying after about a dozen times. The whole thing plays out like a Lifetime movie that feels like it will never end. Like most of these limited series, it could have easily been a 90 minute film. After six episodes, I decided I had wasted enough time and couldn't bring myself to watch anymore. 2/10.
Solos (2021)
Made it through 3 episodes
The 1st episode was ok, 2nd was meh, and after the 3rd I just didn't care anymore and stopped watching. I was hopeful for this series & I think I can see where they were trying to go with it, but ultimately it becomes boring rather quickly. Not terrible, but definitely not missing out on anything if you skip it.
The Undoing (2020)
Loved it
Best show I've watched in quite some time. If you enjoyed Big Little Lies, you'll likely enjoy this too. The Undoing definitely keeps you guessing. Although many of us have been spoiled by full-season releases on streaming services, waiting a week for the next episode helped build suspense and allowed time to discuss theories with friends during covid lol. It's comical that many of these "bad" reviews seem to focus primarily on changes to Nicole Kidman's face (??) or claim to have disliked it but go on to spend even more of their precious time writing an essay-length review. I think some of these are either fake or written by people who should just relax and enjoy it for what it is - a purely fictional tv show for entertainment purposes. Perhaps those who need everything to be "realistic" should stick to factual biographies &/or dry documentaries.
Murder Among the Mormons (2021)
Far too long
Tragic and interesting story but dragged out far too long and overly dramatic. It would have served much better in a 60-90 minute format and with less commentary. Unless you're looking for something to waste 3 hours, just google/wikipedia for the facts.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Ridiculously bad
Watched because it was "trending" Didn't expect much but oh my dear lord I didn't think it would be this bad. The whole thing is even more ridiculous than a soap opera. The acting is truly terrible but since the three main characters were able to make it through the most absurd scenes without bursting into laughter, I guess they deserve some credit for that?
Endings, Beginnings (2019)
BORING
Normally I like Shailene Woodley, but this movie is just incredibly boring. 3 stars because the soundtrack is good. Otherwise, don't waste your time.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)
An experiment in extreme boredom
It was impossible to feel much toward this film as it's so unbelievably boring. Wanted to turn it off several times but kept thinking it would get better. Spoiler alert: It doesn't.
