Ender's Game (2013)
A decent standalone movie but pales in comparison to the book
If you haven't read Ender's Game then this will be a decent watch, a good sci-fi movie with impressive special effects and a reasonably fast moving plot.
Having read the book though I came away with mixed feelings. Obviously there's only so much you can fit into a feature film and the choice to leave out entire plot lines (such as Valentine and Peter's political writings) was completely understandable. However it just seemed that the timing of the whole thing was off. In the books the process from starting Battle School to defeating the Buggers took many years. Watching this film felt like the story took about 10 days. The psychological trauma faced by Ender was basically absent and yet this is so crucial to the story. I'm no Hollywood director but a montage here or there to make it seem like a long gruelling process would have helped people to empathise with movie version Ender far more. Without it he just seems like a bit of a sook as we don't get to see him getting taken to the brink of insanity through how hard he's tested and trained for years. It feels like a missed opportunity because they really nailed so many other aspects of the story but this was a critical one that was missed in terms of character development. Still an enjoyable watch but this could have been something really special as a mini series!
Thai Cave Rescue (2022)
Only gets better as it goes!
Nearly gave up halfway through the first episode but I'm so glad I kept watching. This series is brilliantly done and I found it absolutely gripping. A few cheesey actors but that's few and far between, overall it was a brilliant watch. Those saying that it was too Americanised - I have to disagree. The US played their role and I felt that the series depicted it well. I was most pleased that Dr Richard Harris got all of the attention that he deserves, he's the biggest badass we in Australia have to offer. A great watch, definitely with subtitles and not dubbed as this makes the whole thing just feel far more authentic. It's half in English anyway so there's a good mix between languages. Highly recommend.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Harsh reviews for a solid Sci-fi show
Coming from someone with basically zero prior Star Trek experience, this is a great show. Great action, slow and steady character development and interesting plot points. Sure, it gets pretty cheesy at times but never enough to stop me from watching. Halfway through season 3 and it's still enjoyable, definitely worth a watch for a sci-fi fan. It seems that die hard Star Trek fans don't really like it however from an impartial perspective it's very decent.
