La bête (1975)
'twas Beauty who laid the Beast
Wow. Uhm...well...wow! I guess I'll start with the plot. A betrothed woman (Lucy) arrives at the family home of her would be husband (Mathurin) in France, where they are awaiting the arrival of the Bishop or Cardinal or someone in the Catholic Church to marry them (to satisfy a will.) While waiting, young Lucy learns about a legend of a Beast who roamed the grounds centuries before. In bed that night, she begins fantasizing about the Beast and his rape-turned-consensual tryst with the former lady of the house. That's where it gets interesting! The plot is really pretty thin (and it seems to drag on for quite a while in the middle of the flick), but the filmmaker rewards (?) those who stick it out with a shocking and hilarious finale.
This movie isn't for everyone. If you're looking for great cinema, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a far-out movie about bestiality (that almost casts a sympathetic glance over the subject) this movie is for you! (If you have a weak stomach, don't be afraid of this one. Outside of some horse-on-horse action at the beginning, the 'deeds' are pretty cartoonish, IMO)

Re-imaging with little imagination
From the pathetic opening scene (the once iconic Mrs. Vorhees being beheaded) to the you-knew-it-was-coming ending, this 're-imaging' stunk of mediocrity. If you've seen any of the previous 10 (and a half) 'Jason' movies, then you already know the formula; teenagers/young adults out looking for debauchery are slaughtered by a mad-man in a hockey mask. Change the names, update the clothing and slang, take away the charm and there you go-- you have F13'09.
That said, if you're a slasher fan you can probably have some fun with this movie. What disappointed me more than anything was the complete lack of originality. They took the tried and true formula and churned out what may as well have been another sequel, instead of 're-imagining' anything at all.
At the end of the day, it is what it is; another installment in a franchise that either needs some new ideas or just needs to be put down, like so many of Jason's young victims.
Prom Night (2008)
Cliché-ridden slasher
Three years after witnessing the massacre of her family at the hands of an obsessed former teacher, high school senior Donna is gear up for prom. As she arrives at the extravagant ball (held in a hotel??), word comes that her would-be stalker has escaped from a mental institute. Slowly knocking off both hotel staff and high-schoolers, Mr. Fenton evades the police and makes it back to Donna's house for a final showdown. The good guys win.
I see this movie on 'worst horror movie' lists all the time. I've seen MUCH worse dreck than this! By no means is Prom Night a great (or even good) slasher, but it's not as bad as I expected. If you saw previews or trailers for the movie, you knew what you were getting into: glossy, safe, CW horror. So why, then, would one be disappointed that that is exactly what the movie turned out to be? You can do MUCH better than Prom Night, but trust me, there are far worse horror movies out there.
