RSTC: Reserve Spy Training Corps (2006)
uh, I guess God has not given us a spirit of fear...
There is no way they spent $300,000 on this movie. $20k tops. It was obviously not shot on film (DVX100 is my guess). The actress was hot and the actor definitely thought he was. I felt sorry for the actress with the lines she had. I think the message of "God has not given us a spirit of fear" is a good one, but when a character overtly said it for the 126th time it was like a sledge hammer! The sound production quality was to par, the obvious goofie 3rd tier CG car scenes were, uh, not so much. Come on guys, not so corny next time. Witherspoon takes an explosion from dynamite from 2ft away and he only has black shoepolish marks on his face? Please please please attempt some form of believability. Oh, and the compression on every red shirt in this movie was super pixelated.
Bugs n' Beer (2005)
Woohoo! Bugs N' Beer, that's why we're here!
Let's lift our mugs, and look at bugs! This is classic indie goodness right here. Mad Martian pulls in the laughs big time as the blue bug and man of charm. I must confess I wondered what sort of beer they would be drinking. I hope it was a micro brew. But anyhow, the sway sing along at the end is truly marvelous. Also the way, in true musical form, that everyone starts singing along for no apparent reason is just classic. Brandon Carmody does a great job on music and Mark does a great job directing. This was a huge crowd pleaser the two times I saw it at the Hollywood Theatre. I did wonder about where they got such a blue car, besides I thought green was the Mad Martian's color! The sock puppet theatre and the proposal finale was hilarious. Everyone should raise their mugs and look at bugs!
Diservice (2005)
Fun original short
I saw this film twice at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland and loved it. The crowd really got into it though I did miss a bit of the dialog because the crowd was being too noisy. I definitely want this team for my daughters! Chantelle Chriestenson does an excellent job as the frightened horny girl. Jim Becker brings in the laughs as "Pops" and delivers a great one about what the only kind of safe sex there is! Susan Spencer adds a wonderful "feminine touch" to the team (watch it!). Director Shawn Nelson's performance is a bit sketchy, he should stick to directing. Dan and Shawna Chriestenson are wonderful as the satisfied parents. Kenny Davis looks truly terrified as a former, yet strangely satisfied victim. Cory Combs really pulls it in as a Midwest boy who joined the squad. Mike Villani as the the squad leader is very convincing. Michael Shelton is on key as the twitchy Bartholomew Lawrence (the requisite character). Tatiania Jae is a wonderfully seductive "Mrs. Robinson" and Katie Gunderson looks smokin in a bikini. Very much worth a watch or ten!
