Asoka (2001)
Skip the first 2 Hours
I watched the whole thing, and this is how it looks to me: The first 2 hours are for WOMEN(Songs, Love, Hitchhiking, etc). The last 40 minutes are where the REAL action comes in. It also includes the Historical aspect of the film, whereas the first part is a love story. Trust me,you won't miss anything important in there. I appreciate how the directors emphasized Ashoka's personal attachment to Kaurwaki(as opposed to the other wives), but all the lines are made up. Buddhism did not play a huge part, but it was there in the film, so Credits for that as well. Interestingly, many Edicts of Asoka make reference to the Greek kings, but they are not mentioned at all in the movie. In my opinion, much time is wasted on the romantic scenes.
Defiance (2013)
Awesome start... horrible ending!
I'd give 5 stars because it really deserves that, but the Pilot was so Awesome I added an extra. The first half is actually pretty good both story-wise and visually. The best scene in my opinion ***SPOILER ALERT*** is the Votanist collective bombardment into Defiance. Also, the big three-way conspiracy was intriguing for a while. It got boring once the dude with glasses gets killed by a bipolar native American kid. However once you get to the middle, it becomes quite crappy. Seriously: alien weddings, Mayoral elections, affairs, shape-shifting old ladies, bisexual prostitutes... I knew it was taking a turn for the worst. One part that "touched me" was when the astronaut wakes from cyro-stasis. It was hilarious when he said "This isn't St. Louis!" and the transsexual ape-man walked in front of him. Also, the whole Earth Republic stuff was so boring. If you can manage getting past all the CHEESY dialouge (Shtacho) and the Castithan supremacy crap, good for you. I really looked forward to this being the next sci-fi hit. It failed horribly. DO NOT waste time watching this show!
Da Vinci's Demons (2013)
Ahistorical masterpiece of inventions
Words cannot express how awesome this show is. The story is not about the factual Leonardo Da Vinci, but it does contain accurate architecture and includes a few events Da Vinci actually wrote about (the cave, sodomy charges). The Florentine landscapes and Vatican structures are accurate representations of what they would have looked like. The only scene I was disappointed in was the Judge doing the Pig. The rest is entertaining, refreshing and time-warping. Even the back-story of the De Medici's vs the Pazzi's is intriguing. Not an episode goes by where I don't feel excited about it. Tom Riley's acting is alright, but I wish they gave long hair and stopped the hand twitching nonsense. Overall a great show. Watch and enjoy!
Man of Steel (2013)
Refreshing and Unique
As this movie is still in theaters, I'd suggest you do yourself a huge favor: go and watch it. Movies as Entertaining as this rarely come by. Especially Superman ones. When I first saw the rating it was 8.1, now it is 7.7. It didn't surprise me at all. Seeing the planet Krypton and it's oceans (or whatever you call that mass of green liquid) was different to say the least. I loved the whole military involvement / big guns battles as well. Clark's personality is also reflected in a beautiful way.
The fantasy, love, action is all there. So what's missing? For me, there's this huge sense of Cheesiness pervading the whole film. Clark and Lois Lane get lucky Way Too Many times. The military is annoying as ever, pretending like work is actually getting done. Those Kryptonians are identical to humans and even know English. WTF? Considering how realistic the graphics were, they should attempt to add some realism to the Story itself. Though these are small negatives, I'd say they are enough to bring the rating down to 7.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Mind blowing Spanish spectacle
This was the first film I've ever seen by Guillermo Del Toro. I watched in English Subs, but it didn't bother me at all. It just made the film even more realistic (1950's Spain- Duh). The whole fascist rebellion back-story was just as interesting and entertaining as the main plot - Ofelia and her connection to the magical realm. Every few minutes a huge plot twist occurs, and you change your mind on a character you thought you figured out already. Del Toro managed to squeeze the best acting he could out of most all the actors, especially Ivana Baquero (Ofelia) and Maribal Verdu (Mercedes). Warning: this movie is not for kids. In the first few minutes, a farmer's boy is beaten to death by a wine bottle.. on the face. The connection Ofelia makes with the baby is heart-touching.
