Black Adam (2022)
2/10
Dull and boring by default, full of characters we don't know or care about.

This only gets 2 for the mother and brother. The kid is mostly irritating or a plot device. The action sequence are not imaginative and Dwyane Johnson just hangs around, literally, instead of being engaging. Too much cgi. Too many roids for Dwayne. Not enough explanation of who and what as far as the Justice Society goes and pathetic attempts at building empathy with the characters with one liners and sudden recognition of the girl in the room.

Endless monologues after half of the movie are almost drowned out by the incessant soundtrack. This is not a good movie. Dull as dishwater. Go and sort your laundry out and plan your week instead.

Do your tax instead

Oh dear. I could have been doing so many other things in the time lost watching this dreadful film. The most interesting thing I can say about it is that it provoked a strong desire to warn others off even thinking about watching it. Tidy your sock drawer instead. Do a load of washing and pay some bills. Read some poetry or go to bed and read. Please. Just do something else. Really. Anything. You'll have a better time.

The actors, poor things, have an air of incredulity about them, which you might think is because of the situation. You would be right. How can this be so bad? And yet, it is. In every single way.

Stay away. You have been warned.

The action sequences are pretty good. The relationships are all played nicely. Good escapism with likeable stars.

So much action and still so very, very boring
28 July 2013
I saw this with a couple of 12 year olds and they were apparently as bored as I was. Given the hyper story line and massive protagonists, you would think there would be some excitement. Think away, just imagine it and don't bother seeing the movie because the editing makes the action almost incomprehensible. That big thing hit that other big thing and oh my, the big thing there is going to come around fast....there you go, battle sequences described in almost as much detail as you see.

Central characters you don't really care about, cardboard cutout scientists and two of the worst Australian accents in recent cinematic history also didn't make it very engaging. I mean really? No Australian actor could do the job botched up by those on screen? I don't believe it for one second.

So, dull as dishwater, big and loud, not engaging for 12 year olds and those with a significant amount of years under their belt... not much more to say, except perhaps to say, again, save your money and don't bother.

Nerve (2013)

Drama worth watching.

An engrossing, intriguing and most importantly, entertaining little film from first time feature director Sebastien Guy.

We follow the main character, Jakob Evans, on his obsessive search for closure after the accidental death of his adulterous wife and the impact this has on others, most notably a young woman, Grace. His relationship with her, not an easy one by any means, is beautifully portrayed by the two leads.

Recurring images help convey the broken mind and shattered world of Jakob Evans (Christian Clark) and when his reality crosses over into the world of others, it is engrossing to watch. It has a bit of the feeling of 'Memento' about it, which puts it in good company.

The story is an intense and intimate drama, and we are taken on a journey around and inside a different Sydney from that which tourists usually see. The cinematography is superb and I personally hope the soundtrack is made available for purchase. Guy has put together a rather delicious package full of visual and auditory treats that compliment each other.

Another of the treats is the casting. Gary Sweet delivers as part of a strong supporting cast to the two main characters and Georgina Haig is superb in what could have been a clichéd role. Definitely worth putting some money on her having a big career in the future.

Definitely worth the time if you get the chance.
