Judge Dredd (1995)
Judge Dredd is Sylvester Stallone
Excellent movie. Sylvester Stallone is the real Dredd, a cast simply magnificent, tremendous world of the future, pathos dialogs, it is a lot of variety, the robots, flying cars and other.
I heard many negative responses that a pier the movie foolish and doesn't correspond to original comics, moreover John Wagner told it. I got the comics, both the earliest and more modern. Impudent lies! The first releases (1977-1978 - about 150 issues) absolutely same on the atmosphere to pathos and a visual row as well as the movie of 1995, the only thing just Dredd in comics doesn't remove a helmet, but it is impossible to consider only therefore the movie bad. All the rest if in the movie something isn't present that it was thought up much later, in the mid-eighties - if at all was. Danny Kannon made the screen version of original classical issues, the first issues, issues which were thought up from 1977 to beginning 1980s. Also it turned out at it perfectly. Moreover all humor in the movie corresponds to humor in comics, at least in the old issues.
Sylvester Stallone has a unique charisma and voice, he was born for this role.
For an hour and a half, director managed to acquaint the viewer almost and a half Dredd's huge Universe. He showed Mega City and block-wars in the lower part of the city and council and Aspen's colony and the desert of Cursed Earth and spiteful garbage which there live, various equipment from different futuristic planes and cars to fighting robots to which 50-60 years, work of artists and founders of special effects is higher than all praises.
Cast simply ideal - Max Von Sydow and Jurgen Prochnow simply descended from the pages of comic books, Dian Lane as Hershi is very brutal, I like her command voice. Well and funny Schneider too very much in a subject. But the main thing is Rico in Asante's execution, it is so good that I simply have no words. The cast also is very good in episodic structure, from James Remar to garbage-people from the desert of a Cursed Earth. It is the best statement of the blockbuster, such good direction and casting happens usually only at theater, from movies I can remember only David Lynch's Dune, well and Danny Kannon's Judge Dredd. 10/10.
In the comics a lot of extra, a lot of silly things, time travel and space aliens, totally inappropriate allusions to fascism - all this is not present in the film.
And a shame on John Wagner for impudent lies. And the movie of 2012 which he "consulting-produced" at all wasn't pleasant to me. Here it really has mediocre relation to original and even to more modern Dredd's issues.
Street Fighter: The Movie (1995)
Real Street Fighter
Video game based on the film, which is in turn based on the game. I couldn't believe it, but it in reality! The game is based on one of my favorite movies, where I can to manage the actors from this movie! I became twice happier!
In addition, in the arcade version of the game there is another fighter who is not shown in the film, it's Akuma, and also one of the soldiers of General Bison named Blade.
In the arcade version excellent graphics, backgrounds, sound effects and music. All the characters look like in real life(or like in the movie). However, the version of the game for Sega Saturn and Playstation, is also very decent - there are simplified music and movement fighters, but if you do not compare it with an arcade, you'll be very pleased. Control and techniques is almost the same like in the original "Street Fighter 2" game.
All performers of the main roles, was filmed for this video game - Jean-Claude Van Damme, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, Byron Mann, Andrew Bryniarski and Raul Julia. In the game shown excerpts from the film in the excellent quality of images, sounds Graeme Revell music. Background is also taken from the movie - it's great!
One of the best game of 1990s! 10 out of 10.
Street Fighter (1994)
"If good men do nothing, that is evil enough"
The veteran of action movies, screenwriter Steven De Souza took as basis not the original game from 1987, he took its more popular sequel "Street Fighter 2"(1991), which differed much more original design and interesting selection of fighters. But he wasn't trying to just make a fighting game, he decided to use the characters and ideas of the game as the components of sci-fi action thriller, which he invented. Steven is also a director, this film is his second director's work, after a long break on screen writing career.
In the film there is a big semantic implication and teachings, in the form of dialogs and remarks between the characters. The picture is filled with deep meaning, but it does not become tedious or boring, on the contrary everything is very appropriate. The film is very spectacular, excellent stunt work and work of the artists and special effects creators.
Despite PG-13 rating, the film does not seem quite childish, it has a lot of violence and murder, ever-present tension. For example, the movie begins with news from the hot spot and displaying of General Bison breaks the necks of the captive soldiers.
The director came up with the fictional country Shadaloo in which General Bison is trying to seize power, while on his secret base, equipped with modern equipment and weapons, serve him a lot of fighters and scientists. His ultimate goal is to have the whole world. General wants to create an army of super soldiers, mutants.
He takes as a donor of one of the captured soldier named Carlos Blanca - Charly, it is one of the interesting changes of the director, in the game mutant was another man, but his name is also Blanca, in the game Charlie is the name of the soldier who was killed Bison, and for whose death now wants revenge him on another soldier named Guile, Charlie's friend. Also for example, the girl-fighter Chun Li in the film is the leading reporter, reporting from Shadaloo, boxer Balrog is the cameraman, and sumo fighter Honda a television director, they both leave a career and now work in television together with Chun Li. A excellent interpretation.
Street fighters, main characters of the original game Ken Masters and Ryu, now deal with different kinds of fraud, they arrive in Shadaloo to crank out another thing, but to cheat Sagat and his men they have not come out. Sagat decides to use them as gladiators. But during the first bout of Ryu with champion Vega, the building bursts Colonel Guile on the self-propelled gun, and arrest everyone. Now Guile wants with the help of Ken, Ryu and Sagat to find the lair of Bison and rescue the hostages. Parallel to this, Chun Li and her friends prepare his plan of salvation. This is very well thought out story. Like in the game, Ryu helps Ken, to make the right decisions.
It should also be said that Steven was able to skillfully use the elements of fighting in the story with gun shooting, explosions and chases. In the film there are all super attacks and the habits of the characters, and the actors are strikingly similar. Best turned out Vega - very quick and plastic fighter in the mask and with a glove with blades, which brilliantly played the Jay Tavare, the character literally stepped off the screen of the arcade machine. The same can be said about Zangief, naive strong man, who, being a kind man, foolishly went to serve for Bison.
Guile is well played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, in the film he has a short haircut, which in principle is right, because he's military. From Major, he became a Colonel, he perfectly fulfilled all the incredible techniques of this character from the game. But personally I very liked Damian Chapa in the role of Ken, he gave the character a more natural image, a kind of merry rascal. Well, and actually, this actor always liked me. General Bison is great played Raul Julia, this is perhaps his best role, the last role unfortunately, the actor died two months after the completion of filming, the film is dedicated to his memory.
As always at Steven De Souza, a very competent humor, really funny in many scenes and dialogs. The film does not become too comedic. All perfectly balanced. He also wrote the title song and exciting radio-remarks.
Great Graham Revell music, perfectly emphasizes the atmosphere and morale of the film. Especially managed opening theme, and the theme of sending of the AN(Allied Nations) soldiers.
A movie that may many teach the younger generation, an example to follow. The perfect combination of action, sci-fi, fighting and humor. A great example of how to make movies based on video games. 10 out of 10.
I strongly disagree with critics who threw slop this wonderful film. Guys, I think you do not understand what you want. Probably you wanted make the characters look cartoon and silly, like in the game. In any case, this is not a criticism, it's just your stupid taste. Need to be a very bad person to scold this film.
Sewer Shark (1992)
John Dykstra's Sewer Shark
This video game is one of my favorite. I love the Sega CD and 3DO, and I hate majority modern games with pixel characters and interiors.
The story and game-play in the atmosphere is very reminiscent of the movie "Moon 44" and some moments from the original "Star Wars". A robot named Catfish, which helps you to determine the direction of flight in a futuristic collectors, is very similar to a mixture of C3PO and Control from "Hard Time on Planet Earth".
The acting is very good, especially David Underwood in the role of your commander named Ghost and the voice of Catfish, Robert Weaver. But the game-play is also great, it is not just computer graphics, this is special photographic concept, real special photographic animation, like in real sci-fi movies. Because the director of this interactive movie was maestro John Dykstra - special photographic effects supervisor of Star Wars, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and as producer creator of Battlestar Galactica(pilot film), also second unit director on "Invaders from Mars".
The first time I played the original version of the game for Sega CD. Now I mostly play 3DO version(1994), in this version better image(almost fullscreen) and during the game-play another music, better in sound quality and more dynamic music than on the Sega CD. Anyway, I love both versions of this game.
It was quite possible to shoot additional scenes and combining it with the game-play to mount a full-fledged feature film.
For its time it was incredible! A huge thanks to Rob Fulop, Ken Melville, Tom Zito and to all employees of Digital Pictures, for such great games they made in the 1990s for us. 10 out of 10!
The Gladiator (1986)
This is a Gladiator
Wonderful and rewarding film. The film is about how a simple, good guy decided to restore order on the roads, the reason for this was the death of his brother. He breaks the cars of drunk drivers, leaving them for police. His car is equipped with special devices. The main goal, to find the killer of his brother. Movie impressive car chases and stunts, as well as music and songs.
Cast is worthy. The main character wants to empathize. The girlfriend of the main character Susan is also a very interesting character, it helps Rick cope with depression, she broadcaster, has commented on the development of the story in the course of the film. The movie is saturated dialogs and dramatic moments.
Soulful and entertaining film.
Deadly Weapon (1989)
To have such weapon is a big responsibility.
This movie is the best in this thread. Story about teenager whom all hurt and considered worthless, he was made to kneel all people and made them tremble with fear, without deliberately killings. This movie is filled with feelings. The movie makes you think. Not just fun for once.
Teen found the secret thermal weapon, that could destroy the entire planet. The U.S. army wants to declare martial law. This is a very topical plot.
Michael Miner, gives meaning to every scene of the film. Teen imagines himself a stranger from another planet, and that's usually fantasize of children who no longer needed nobody, it helps them cope with depression. His mother left him. His stepfather is a washed-up crazy drunk. Sister, busy personal life.
Having caught a powerful weapon, boy is not a killing spree, he only scares their abusers. He only explodes cars and empty buildings. It correctly. The film is entertaining, good special effects.
The film, which is a must for everyone of us.
